    Is anyone here doing this program? I know someone who is just starting homeschooling (Gr. 2 & 4) and she will be using it - I have never heard of it before, although I have been in the homeschooling circles for 4-5 years now.

     

    Anyway, what is it? How does it work? What kind of educational philosophy does it follow? Is it good?

    I was really considering CC for my oldest (first grade), and I went to their 3-day practicum and decided that for us... it is not worth it. I can to memory work with her at home. But I think it is a REALLY neat program for grade 3 and up - especially later, as they have to learn public speaking, make a presentation, and use IEW. So I think I will wait a couple of years, and then I may need to invest in it.

    Mystery of History - latest edition - this is what I will use with my 6yo. I have SOTW, too, but will use it only if I need something to add to MOH, or some of the activities if they seem like fun.

    I read the Preface and the introduction and really like the Christian author's views - of Mystery of History.

    SOTW - I was shocked it does not start with the beginning - Creation.

    What is the difference between Webster & McGuffey spellers?

    Please help me decide which one to use (I found them both free on-line) for my 1-st grader who reads on a 2-3rd grade level, but not good on spelling yet.

     

    1. What is the different between the two - my take is that one starts with syllables tables (Webster), the other one with short-vowel words made of one syllable.

     

    2. How do you implement it (either)? Do you write a row of syllables or words from f.i. Lesson 1, and have your child copy it? I do not know how to do it to be effective.

    Help with History

    I will be using Mystery of History for my first grader and younger - you can teach it for the very young, too, but you need to do the read-aloud. I have SOTW, too, but Mystery of History is MUCH more biblically based. I will use SOTW only as additional reading, as it is not biblically based, it does not start with creation.

    Tomorrow is our official first day of school!

    We had our party back to school party last Sunday - I used contrsuction paper to make big signs Back to school party. Made some other ornaments that I hung from the ceiling in our dining room where the party took place. They opened their backpacks with lots of fun new things... Then we started school on Monday.

    Abeka Language Arts and Spelling

    I used Abeka first grade last year for K for my oldest - with workbooks and all - I think it was too much for her, she got bored - BUT she can read very well now that we are starting first grade.

    We did the language art workbook (just a 1/3 of it) and the spelling workbook with tests - also 1/3. I do not know how much she got out of those, I was using abeka mainly for phonics and reading, and she is reading pretty well.

     

    I will start some spelling later in first grade, but not Abeka.

     

    But I am thinking of using Abeka phonics next year for my son when he gets to K, since my daughter did so good with the reading.

    Is anyone else excited for school to start?

    Yessssss!!!!!

    We already had our Back to school party this past Sunday, I decorated the dining room and prepared their backpacks with all kinds of new little things, and we started!

    Now then, mu oldest is only in first grade. But everyone gets bored if no school...

    I am glad I started early cause we get to do more fun stuff/field trips this way.

    We did not do Singapore Math every day, but when we did, we did a lot of it - it is really easy. So we finished well before the school year. Then we did a little Abeka first grade, just to see if she knows what she should, and she does.

     

    Most time in K we spent on reading (used Abeka first grade material), and a lot of drawing, painting - her favorite thing to do. K is fun!! And we did HWOT.

    First grade and Science

    My oldest is (will be this fall) in first grade, and we already started the school year - lightly - but I do not have yet a plan for science for her. I do have one of the Kingfisher books WTL recommends, but I would like to use something with more hands-on experiments that is also planned for me.

     

    Any suggestions, please?
