  1. My 3rd grader, too. She is not a good listener, and she reads fast and does not stop to think, or pay attention to details. I have just started Specific Skill Series and morwing on the booklet called "Getting the main idea" - but the series has 7 specific sckills, each with their booklet. I am hopeful this might get her into thinking about what she is reading...
  2. :-)) You ladies are so funny!! I have had a 3rd grader, 1st grader, PreK and 1 yo this year. I HAD TO buy Managers of their homes. So I tried to schedule a little bit. 8-9 breakfast - while mouths are busy, read the Bible. 9am-9:30 - 5yo plays with 1yo and tried to keep her busy (this works ok some days, at all others, depending on how many teeth we have coming in that week.) 8yo does independent grammar, I work with 6yo. 9:30-10:00 - 6yo plays with baby, I work with 5 yo and 8yo - at the table, helping both. 10:00am - 11:30am - baby naps. I do history with all three (I read allowed and ask question, they color, SOTW), or Latin together. They also have a break. 11:30-12, baby is up and I am hodling her while doing a little more with with 8yo. 12-1:30 lunch and play outside. 1:30 I do some more with 6yo. 2:30 - nap for baby and quiet time for the others (reading quietly.) I usually to science with the 8yo. By 4pm we are done, just in time to work on dinner, with no energy. The house is a disaster by now, as the 6yo and 5yo taking care of baby produces chaos everywhere.
  3. Both my 3rd and first grader like WWE. Have you looked at this one?
  4. We tried the welltrainedmind way for 1st, 2nd and half of third grade. My dd did not remember much, I started now half way through 3rd the BJU science curriculum and it is very through and fun book to read, and the workbook helps her to establish the knowledge in her mind. I think she might have needed this from the beginning. We are going to test soon, and we'll see, but really I do not think she remembers much from what we did in first and second a la Well Trained Mind. I will not make the same mistake with my other three. But I think each child is different. Maybe other children do learn from just reading books and do not need much review.
  5. I gave up following WTM recommendations for science because it never got done. I bought BJU Science 3 for my 3rd grader - we are doing it together - she reads alound the text, I ask her the questions from TM, see if there are any missunderstandings, read her the extra science from the TM, and then she has the activity book, or the experiment. It gets done and she loves it.
  6. I think it is a harder project, but the presentation is the same. Our library had it, and the presentation was the same, but then different projects to 3 different tables, arranged by age.
  7. I am interested in the difference between them as well.
  8. When did Henty live? This could explain his POV very well. Attitudes like this have changed over the last 100 years. But they were very real in the past.
  9. We used US edition for 1 A, B, but I bought standard for 2 and up (we are in 3A and 1B with 2 children.) I like both, Standard has better Home Instructor Guides. We do txbk, wkbk, CWP and IP.
  10. Thank you, I cannot download the google book to print lessons for my 3rd grader, but I was able to look in pdf at the ones from Cornell U and I think I will be able to print what I need!! Are these - Book 1 and 2 - for grades 3 and 4?
  11. What kind of paper do you buy? We have an ink jet printer - it is very slow, and we buy ink cart. off ebay as well - they are not new, but the refurbished ones.
  12. Did you call Paypal and were you able to get your money back? I am so sorry this happened to you. It has never happened to me here or on homeschoolclassifieds.com I did not buy many things here - maybe 3-4 transactions. I buy much more on homeschoolclassifieds.
  13. IP can be hard, has some exercises that are approached differently than in the wkbkm, txbk. EP is not necessary of you do the rest (txbk, wkbk, CWP and IP) but since you are just supplementing, I do not know what to say. My dd thinks CWP is easier than IP :-)She is 8.5
  14. How can I download the book for free? Or how can I print it? It says free e-book but I can't use it!
  15. How do you when where the place the children? I am interested in their reading program, dithor, but don't know what to choose for my good/great 3rd grade reader? Is there a test online??
  16. Thank you for your suggestions and input - everybody. Maybe for 4th grade I will do FLL (she has done 1 & 2) I just needed something more independent. I will check out Winston and the other. R & S I heard is time consumming? I will have to look into that, too. Yes, I will check out the KISS explanation.
  17. I only have 2, doing WW3 and WW1 (8 and 6yo.) I do not do it every day. I do Day 1 and 2 in one day, and day 3, and 4 in another day - we do it 2-3 times a week. For both. For me it is easier to combine. I have 2 younger ones so I don't have a lot of time, but we do go through them. Writing down the WWE1 & 2 does not take long. I do not skip much.
  18. I do not know if Winston is for older grades, it does not have a grade level on the cover. I just don't know what to do with her to get her parts of speech right.
  19. It is like pulling teeth. One day is ok, the next day she has no clue which is the subject, predicate, etc... We are finishing up Growing with Grammar 3. Someone suggested Winston Grammar. I also have parts of Michael Clay's program and I was going to buy the whole thing and do it at the end of GWG. But Winstons seems much easier (less time) to implement? Are there any resources online to help with this? Thank you
  20. Thank you for your replies. So LfC A is the same level as LL? Are there other levels? What do you do after? I was thinking of trying LFC - because I have it, and if it works well, then buy LL and switch to that???
  21. Hi, I am new at Latin. I have a 3rd and 1st grader and we are finishing up Song School Latin. I have bought Latin for Children with the dvds, because I know they will enjoy it. But I just read WTM and it recommends "Big Book of Lively Latin" - which is $55. Has anyone used it? How is it different than LAtin for CHildren? Should I get it as a supplement? Any other supplement for Latin for Children? Thank you for taking the time to read and answer.
  22. I am so glad to hear there are resources for homeschooling in TN!! And groups and classes/sports. We have good friends there but none homeschool. How do you keep a thread, as in not losing track of it??
  23. Thank you all, we are christians so of course looking for a christian umbrella school. Is that Aaron Academy in Hendersonville, TN? That is exactly where we will be moving. I like the idea of the diploma. Testing is NOT required inTN? I will message privately about the CC, thank you!!
