  1. We use them as sups too. My kids loved the JOy of Math & Joy os Science. We also did the Iilad which was fascinating--wish I had it when I was in school. The prof was superb & really helps you so the significance of this book. We plan on also using the Chem series this yr but the company came out with their high school version so we're going with this one. It comes with a workbook & from what I've read looks very complete. My husband has listened to others too. Cheers, Cindi:):iagree:
  2. Ok....I'm in the midst of writing to the President. I've been an FP for 12+ yrs now, volunteered at numerous Free Clinics & Community Clinics.....I'm so fed up with the wasteful Medicaid system on top of the Disability programs!!!! You all have no idea! Any one with Medicaid can see whom ever they wish when ever they wish & not pay a single dime!! Where as someone who is working, paying taxes & pays their copays (which I've seen up to $40), their deductibles & often 20% after their insurance has paid is getting wiped out. I can go on & on with horrors of spending just this week. I understand their are real people that need help but when you see a single mom of 2 & pregnant, on disability at 25 y/o (for what I'm still trying to figure out) stay married to a cheating husband calls med for medical necessity to turn their electricity back on because they didn't pay the bill but can some how afford both cell phones, cable, cigaretts, fake nails (that's IT)!!!!! I almost wanted to laugh! Does she recall our last ice storm??? How about Little House on the Praire times? Electricity is not medically necessary unless your on some electrical medical equipment that is life saving. Give me a brake. I tell you it's people like this who are always in the ED or in my office expecting everthing & feel they're entitled to it all. Again I could go on & on with cases. If everyone reading this cares at all on the status of healthcare, you all should DEMAND with yelling voices that Medicaid & how ever disability is determined be OVERHAULED NOW. As a doctor I do tons of probono care for those who really need it ( I know who these families are after doing it so long) & never think twice about it. All the time. Again, doctor means teacher. I also do homevisits & never charge. Again, do unto others as you'd have done to yourself is a ruling principle not entitlement & a system who fascilitates such waste. Better stop here. 4. Hi, well we had read the same thing so last yr, my son was in 4th grade, & he was finishing up saxon 54 & moved on & finsihed 65. We did add Sing. but he found it super easy. There was no review! Despite purchasing the teaching texts along with the 2 levels we used the teacher's bk maybe 5x. He could just do the work. We structured the mix with Sax. on M,W & F and Sing on T & H. We also had him calcu/alphaladders (which I love). This yr. he'll move on to Sax.76 finish up with the calca-/alphaladders but will not do Sing again. Hope this helps. Cindi
  5. Hi, the WTM actually recs doing this for the view is no one math book (view) covers everything. So last yr we added Singapore to our Saxon. Now my son was 9 last yr & completed Saxon 56 & moved on to 65 the last month of the yr. We used Saxon M,W,& Fridays & Sing. on T & H's. How we chose Sing. level was by their website. I believe we printed off a test which helped place. My son is very strong in math & he found the Sing. too easy & cruzed thru 2 levels way before the end of the yr on top of the Saxon. So this yr we're not doing Sing. & will just finish out 65 & move on. Another thought----we noticed there's not much cumulative review in Sing. After using it, I don't think I'd chose it again. Cindi
  6. Thanks to all! We're glad we're not alone. After a while you start to wonder. I've already looked at all the recs you all gave me. Greatly appreciated! Cheers! Cindi:D
  7. Ok, what is this IEW camp? Haven't heard of it. I can't believe he's writing 5pg stories. That's great! This is what we need. Not sure what a druidawn group is either?? I'll do anything.
  8. Yes, I love Jabberwocky, The Spider & the Fly...we use Poetry through Memorization book rec. by the Well Trained Mind. We love poetry work & my kids have gone thru 3 in a half levels of the 4 in the book in the last 2 yrs. We do it at breckfast every morning. The kids have put a few to song & others where they take turns chiming in with alternating lines. I've thought of making a DVD of their recitations. We love this book & it's amzing what their minds can absorb & retain. It takes about 15-20 mins to run thru all 45 they know now. We also love the Cookie Thief, Valarie Cox. Cheers, Cindi:D
  9. Thanks April, How would you apply credits to this curic? 1 credit for each subject covered (Hx,Lit,Relig,Philosophy,...) Cindi
  10. :confused:Hi, My 10 y/o son is very smart---advanced in math & now is a strong reader. He doesn't mind these subjects or poetry memorization work. He'll practice his piano & guitar, but when it comes to writing.... it's like PULLING TEETH!!!! We've tried journals, free verse, IEW ancient history, finishing a line. He didn't seem to mind the write source workbook. So, any of you with similar sons & have success stories that can help us turn our son into loving writing? Is this his personality or just a stage? We never encountered it with our older dd. I know everyone has areas they are stronger in but I'm not sure what to do. But my husband was ready to send him back to school because of his attitude. HELP:confused: Cindi
  11. Hi, I'm overwhelemed trying to decide on a strong history/lit/writing program? Tapestry looks strong but not sure if it's strong enough for high school? Although it looks like it would be good for my 10 yr. old for the rest of his studies. Looks like we'd still have to add SAT vocab study, Science (Apologia Chem), Math (finishing Inductive Geometry & then to Algebra 2), Spelling Power & we'd continue with Poetry through Memorization. She also plays piano & harp, dances ballet & tae kwon do class. So we're busy! Has anyone used it for high school? or do you have other recs? My daughter loves to read history & is a strong writer. I wanted to get more into analytical writing. She doesn't need any work on comprehension. She has an almost photographic mind. Thanks for the guidance, Cindi:tongue_smilie:
  12. HI, My son had an AWEFUL time starting to read. He was actually in a private school that specialized in strong reading but he was failing (Reid School in SLC, UT). We did many of what some of these above replies have recommended. In the end what we learned was the way the school was teaching reading was by site recognition & memorization. So he could see & read only those words that were taught. He lacked the ability to decode because he wasn't taught & it never came intuitively. So, we pulled him out & now homeschool him along with my 13 y/o. We used hooked on phonics followed by hooked on reading programs. He cruzed thru both & we were amazed. He went from throwing tantrums when we'd try to get him to read to now where he's fighting us to have him put books away. He's now 10 & it's worth the effor to primarily focus on this ability before you really care about anything else. For his 3rd grade yr we did hooked on phonics, spelling power, saxon & sigapore maths (saxon 3 days/wk & sig. 2 days/wk), writing strands, Poetry thru memorization, piano, tae kwon do & soccer. 4th grade all the same but hooked on reading & IEW ancient history & he wanted to add guitar too. I hope this helps. If your interested I still have the 2 programs & would sale them. Cheers, Cindi:001_smile:
  13. I'm new to the forum. My daughter used Smarr Publisher's Ancient History comprehensive English/history program last yr----the books were strong but the rest of the program focused more on comprehension than on critical writing skills. So we're on th ehunt again for something else out there. Any suggestions??? Has anyone used any of these I found listed in Rainbow Resource :Write Source, Saxon grammar & writing,Classical Writing, or IEW's student writing intensive?? Thanks, Cindi :)
  14. so sorry but I have no way of scanning it to my computer otherwise I could email. How about the old fashioned mail system? Send me your address or maybe someone in your family has a fax? Cindi
