  1. That's the one. Thank you ever so much. I don't think I'll trouble her, but at least I know what happened to them.
  2. Hi Ladies, It's been about a year since I've checked in at The Hive, but I used to be pretty regular. I have had to get work outside the home and don't have much time for socializing here anymore, but I am looking for something and hope it's still here. I don't know the time lapse, but a mom at The Hive made youtube video of herself teaching her kids (jr high) how to diagram the first sentence of The Hobbit. It was done in 3 segments. It was most interesting and had lots of rave reviews and questions by The Hive. I was hoping to find it again because my girls are now jr high age and we are reading The Hobbit. Have any of you been here long enough to remember that? If so, can you link it. I'd love to watch it again and have my girls see how other families homeschool at the same time. TIA, Robin Hood p.s. ~ I have already posted this question on the K-8 Forum, but thought more of you at the general forum might recall it.

  4. Are you saying that people who do not take graduate level apologetics courses are unable to consider and ponder the great questions? I don't think she was insinuating that...:grouphug: Not to worry. I did take it personally because I am not a school oriented person, (I almost flunked high school and never went to college), but it did not hurt my feelings. I am on the other side of the question now, and in hindsight, think that it's like asking if the sky is blue. That it is being asked makes it relevant, and in more thinking, even John the Baptist asked the question of Jesus. But that question implied so much more to me that it seemed too simplistic. It's a good place to start, though. My own questioning of who Jesus is, is related to and not separated from the Bible. I was considering Heather's question in relation to my first doubts of the Bible 16 years ago when I discovered that some ancient writings mirrored those of Moses and I wondered who influenced who. I delved into finding out, praying all along the way, dating doubt, but staying awfully close to faith at the same time, because if one bit of the Bible isn't true, none of it is. I put God to the test. If the Bible stands true, then there must be a savior, if not Jesus, it's someone else. Some other person must be God's son. It's all related and I don't think the question can be asked without assuming that there is a son of God because the Bible assumes it. Is Heather asking if there is such thing as a son of God or does she mean that there is a son and is or is not Jesus the man? ETA ~ I referred back to Heather's original Question and realize I latched onto only one part of it. Does that change things?
  5. Using words is not my gift and I make big jumps mentally before words come out of my mouth, so please, bear with me. [quote name='Heather in NC;1260969 - Jesus Christ is NOT the son of God - Mohammed was insane and had no part of the Quran I'd like to see you rework this question for me' date=' because the claims in the Bible, New and Old Testament, point to the need for a redeemer beginning in Genesis and prophesy of One who will be throughout. He even showed up a few times before He got here. (omniscient? omnipresent? ) If it is not Jesus, then that puts Him in the insane department and it must be somebody else and we missed it or the One is still yet to come. Or are you saying the Bible is useless literature, or a fun fairy tale maybe. If Jesus is not who He says he is, then to imitate Him and live by the Great Commandment is a joke. I cannot separate Jesus from the Bible. Are you saying that people who do not take graduate level apologetics courses are unable to consider and ponder the great questions?
  6. In the fashion of It's a Wonderful Life, let's pretend there was no Jesus. Since there is the claim that all things were created by Him and through Him, there would be no existence of the world in which we live. There would be no man nor woman to procreate so there would be no curve of child's shoulder to gaze upon. No husband to bring you tea. No papers to grade. The other alternative would be evolution in which we would be merely animals with out a soul or intelligence because those cannot exist without God. There would be no reason to have them. So I agree with GretaLynne and Carol in Cal. These things cannot be separated from God and this type of questioning is neither helpful nor relevant.
  7. I, too, am somewhat challenged in that area, but one thought I have for you to save money is that the kids can plug their ipods into their alarm clocks if they have one. I plug my mp3 player into mine and my nephew plugged his ipod into my dd's alarm clock when he was visiting. You just may not need those docking stations if their alarm clocks have that capacity, assuming they have alarm clocks.
  8. I don't "hate it". It was troublesome at best. It saves me from having to buy more smaller bottles at higher prices when I find it on sale. The measuring cap goes in the washer. I NEVER replace it. When the clothes go in the dryer, there it sits, at the bottom of the washer, clean and ready for the next load. I then save it when the bottle is done in the event that the new using one does get lost in the load and goes into the dryer. I have a couple of them hanging around. I don't mind standing the bottle upright, as all the rest of the bottles stand upright also. The size and price keep me buying it and I tweek the system intended. I am smarter than the bottle and the system intended.
  9. We also use State Farm insurance but the good news is that our agent has 2 little girls and his wife has been homeschooling them now for a couple of years. They are younger than my dds. So it could be awhile, but he is one agent who will help the cause. Not in time you, unfortunately.
  10. I dread math with my dd (11 next week). It is the one thing that ruins home education and makes me want to cave. It makes me the mean mommy. The anxiety in my stomach when the resistance begins has made my kids see the worst in me. I am still trying to plug along though. God bless your effort. Maybe this might help you feel better. http://www.triviumpursuit.com/blog/2007/04/03/teaching-math/ And this; http://www.ithaca.edu/compass/storyI-III.htm
  11. I hope your books come quickly. No problems here, but besides their high shipping rates, I was surprised by the high cost altogether. I ordered about two weeks ago and had the product about a week later. The quality has gone up. I am still trying to decide if I should order another workbook though, and hope that doesn't take too long if I do. I am considering Saxon again for one dd. At the end of the last school year, I received a public school set of Saxon Math books FREE; student and teachers manuel, but no workbook or tests pages. By the time I order those and a dive cd, I am paying another $80.00. A MUS workbook would be less, but I don't want to pay another $10.00 shipping fee for one book. She really wants to go back to Saxon. Just thinking out loud hoping it will help me decide.
  12. I am a very wee bit shorter than you and considered tall, too. I have never had attitude thrown at me because of MY height. Some little guys have attitude because THEY are little. Then there are some men who just prefer to talk to men because they don't have lot of respect for women who have authority.
  13. We have a 5 hour drive and we'll be talking about these options. Thanks. I would love to go to Santa Barbara but we are going to wait until we have more time. Dh just found out he has another week long business trip coming up next month and I am hoping to get some time off my work so we can go with. If so, Santa Barbara just might be doable. Thanks, I didn't know it was only 30 minutes away.
  14. We get a one day excursion to Ventura, CA. What does one do in Ventura CA? We've already been to the Mission.
  15. If a corral is close, I corral the cart; if not, I secure it. I have secured other carts as I leave my car to go into a store and I have chased manless carts running in the wind so other cars or people don't get hit. But I will never judge a person based what they do with their carts. It is an act of kindness to put a cart away, but not always practical.
  16. :iagree: both this and the popcorn idea are good. Spike seasoning has nutritional yeast in the ingredients. It's been years since I took it in tablet form, but it was great for keeping the mosquitoes away, made my skin soft and peachy, and aided in getting my some sleep in my inability to sleep well.
  17. Mine finally got to be 10 yo (soon to be 11) and is now a dream child. I will not be deceived, though. Puberty is on the way. I just have a breather right now and after I catch my breath I have no doubt it'll be a hard run to the finish.
  18. :bigear: Me too. But until then I have decided that for the next birthday or Christmas I just might go ipod, making life simpler.
  19. I feel like my 10yo are the only 10 yos not reading it. I have chosen to know nothing about it and wonder if it is a bit too mature for a 10yo.
  20. LOL, It figures, reversals. Some of them must be ok or they wouldn't be in business. We who got bad ones let it be known at amazon for out of over 65 comments, 95% of them gave it 1 star. Maybe there was a bad crop at one time.
  21. Women like to discuss things. It could probably be fine without the discussion. Being kind without opening your self up to future insults and hurt is not that hard. It is actually kind of fun once you figure out how to do it. Sum up the personalities involved and stop being hurt. Swallow the desire to be in control while remaining in control of your feelings. Amazingly, stoic, congenial behavior gives the appearance of self control and respect and while performing it, opens up your understanding to greater depths and gains you the respect you are giving to others. Looking back to all the "discussions" or even hurt feelings I have had, I wish I had learned this concept when I was young. After a while, "performing" becomes reality and respect for others and getting along with them in spite of differences is an easy thing to get, if you're willing to do it. Time wins people, not discussion. People need to see in time, and discover for themselves, that they may have been misjudging you. Keep your head up and have a party, inviting your cousin. Ignore the past, even if it comes up. Your cousin won't be able to see that you did what was best for your family if she can't see it. No need to defend yourself. Just show with a smile and the courtesy that we are obliged to give to others. Be the first to bend.
  22. Yah, I did. For a few years. It was a peri-menopausal thing. Just in case it's hormonal, you might consider talking to your gynecologist.
  23. I am going to post just to give you an idea of what to watch out for. Before we moved, the rental we lived in had an old loud dishwasher that cleaned fast and furious and wonderful. Our new place had no dishwasher so I bought a portable. I cannot offer a recommendation, but the new one, if it is any indication of how the new ones are made, has to have the dishes practically washed before they go in and it takes 2 hours to cycle with hardly any drying time. I have to crack the door to get the condensation out. It is a Maytag and it was $500 +. Although I am grateful for my dishwasher, I would take an old, fast and furious any day and run it at night time.
  24. I loved my Rowenta before it bit the dust. In a tiny house I had to iron in a small high traffic area and with all the traffic, it was continually dropping and falling apart. I pieced it back together so many times and it always worked great, for years. When it finally quit, I bought a Shark at Kmart, the only "general" store we have in our small town. It made the same great claims as the Rowenta, cost as much and was beautiful. Don't ever be temped to buy one. Ever. Total waste of money. Spits continually. Turns off on a whim. Gauge sticks. Irons poorly. Curiously, I checked out the reviews at Amazon. Not good. Bottom line ~ I agree with the Rowenta recommendation. I would even take one as a Christmas gift from my dh, that's how bad I want another one.
