  1. We made oatmeal cream pies... that counts, right?
  2. Cross species communication. There's a farm near us that has goats and horses together, but the llamas/alpacas are in a separate field, apparently because they don't understand each other's communications (ear pinning vs spitting) I find it interesting that goats and horses can understand each other, but not horses and llamas!
  3. The preschool book(s) got changed a lot - the core reference book changed because the old one went out of print. The grammar stage books used to use Janice Van....'s experiment books, but the newer version just includes the experiment in the teacher's guide. Other than that, I don't think the curriculum fundamentally changed.
  4. You could absolutely make it up, but when we take a break from our main writing curriculum (writing with ease) we've used a story starters book or the Writing and Rhetoric workbooks.
  5. I've been to two. Almost exclusively, everyone brought diapers. But really, it was an excuse for everyone to hang out and eat cake!
  6. It should be a book featuring cats! Pete the Cat?
  7. I found a spoon in dd9's snap circuits (and other random electronics bits) box. Why is there a spoon here? To test conductivity, of course! Can I get you a paperclip instead, my dear? Nah, I'm good with the spoon. I didn't mean you could keep the spoon!
  8. Meyers Park is perhaps not gospel, but definitely solidly hits your other boxes.
  9. I just finished Heroes of Havensong (Owl Crate Jr) and it ended on a cliffhanger! Nooo! It was just released, so it's probably going to take forever for the next book to come out. I'm almost done reading The Ogress and the Orphans to dd8. Next we'll read the Neil deGrasse Tyson biography (Black History month read?) Half a chapter left of La telaraña de Carlota. Next I think I'm going to try a collection of Hermanos Grimm. Book club book was The One, by John Marrs. Terrible! But I don't go in for thriller stuff. Next is Jurassic Park, which I don't think I've ever read! I see we have some Brandon Sanderson fans here. I'm also waiting on my kickstarter book to arrive. Going to read it in print, not electronically, so I'm just waiting and waiting...
  10. Pathway readers and the Alice and Jerry books were what I used to teach reading.
  11. I have an equal number of carriers and critters. Though I almost always use the dog carrier for one of the cats (and keep dog on leash.) One cats always tries to spread his legs wide to make it difficult to put him in the cat carrier, but it's a non-issue in the dog carrier!
  12. English - I follow the style of ELTL and WWE, but with my own books. Homemade spelling. Perhaps a poetry unit. Writing??? Dd wants more creative writing. Math - Saxon 6/5. We'll do Primary Math 4 this summer. Science - Biology for the Logic Stage. My science loving kid is excited about dissections (for now!). We're finishing up the last of the grammar stage books in this series, so we'll see how the step into logic goes. History - SOTW4. Or continuing 3, since we tend to go off on tangents. Technology - Continue Scratch programming with the (retired) LEGO BOOST system. Perhaps 3D printing with the MakerBot guidebook. Electives through public school: Orchestra, Spanish, and art. Extra E/C: riding lessons.
  13. Our local nature centers give the seeds away in the fall. Free!
  14. The Lost Metal, Brandon Sanderson - This was my book for Jolabokaflod. This one is just for me. I enjoy most of his writing, but this one feels more melancholy, perhaps because it's the end of the series. La telaraña de Carlota (Charlotte's Web), EB White - I'm trying to work on my Spanish. Just finished the second Harry Potter book, so I'm hoping for an easier read. Willodeen, Katherine Applegate - Reading this aloud to dd8. It's a very interesting read, a fictional take on climate change and ecosystems. The One, John Marrs - This is my book club book for January. I really need to start this! @ScoutTNHow's Red Planet? We just went through a Heinlein phase, reading The Farmer in the Sky (didn't age so well. Too patriarchal for us!) and The Rolling Stones (much better, more of a family drama style).
  15. I was at Old Navy, buying kids dinosaur tshirts, on my own. Cashier says to me, "Oh, I bet you have a son who loves dinosaurs." No, I have a DAUGHTER who loves dinosaurs! This was a few years ago. I hope we've gotten beyond the girls love pink and princesses thing.
  16. I'm very confused. We've had chickens for six years now. I agree, when they molt less eggs are available but it's because their energy goes into growing new feathers instead of egg production. So when they molt, there are simply less eggs laid. Molting birds don't lay wonky eggs, molting birds don't lay eggs, period. So, I don't know why you are getting weird quality eggs. If it's more than 2 eggs per dozen, I'd find a different source. As far as waiting a few weeks.... birds slow down their egg production in fall. Ours quit laying altogether in the winter and we have to buy grocery store eggs (Booo!) I know you can do things like install lights to trick the birds, but we just let our birds take a season off. Seems like the natural thing to do. Sorry, not much help!
  17. It is possible, but not certain, that we will be moving to Alabama or Tennessee soon. Currently, we reside in a state where nothing is required - no notification, testing, nada. I've looked up the regulations, but was wondering if someone could tell me what it's actually like in those two states. Here, homeschoolers are allowed to take electives at the public school (mine is currently taking art and Spanish) and can participate in sports/band/orchestra (mine is starting violin this year) How willing are the local schools to work with homeschoolers?
  18. I got it (Moderna) Saturday. More arm soreness than with the flu shot, but less than the original "Moderna arm." It's been ten months since my last booster, and I wanted it ASAP, especially as dd's extracurriculars are all about to start up, increasing our amount of potential exposures.
  19. My husband recently pointed out that we've been reading a lot of fantasy read alouds to dd9. Do you have suggestions for read alouds of other genres? For reference, we've read: Extremely Inconvenient Adventures of Bronte Mettlestone Harry Potter Ollie's Odyssey The Mapmakers Ogre Enchanted Dragon's Guide to the Care and Feeding of Humans Marvelous Land of Oz Five Children and It
  20. Kumon math workbooks are a staple in our house, but they're pretty boring. This summer, we're working through two Mad for Math books - Spooky Problems and Wizard School. Much more colorful and fun! Dd8 liked the Spooky book and found it rather easy. The Wizard book is at her level, but we're finding multiple errors! Sorry, I'm no help on other subjects. I bought some Magic School Bus science kits for summer science, and we just read books for English.
  21. Agree to Science Comics and the Mac Axiom books. Also Notable Notebooks Exemplar Evidence How to Think Like a Scientist Mad Margaret experiments with the Scientific Method
  22. Thanks all! I've requested a bunch of math picture books on inter-library loan. I also ordered a couple of Mad for Math books (seems to be the current edition of the Math Adventures books) She used Snow's Math Facts that Stick books last summer, I agree they have good ideas to cement the basic facts!
  23. Back in March/April, we finished up our main curriculum and switched to a lighter summer load (just math and English). Dd8 finished Saxon 3, so I decided to try Beast Academy 2 for the summer. We got through 2A and half of 2B, but it's just too much. Too many tears and struggles. Any suggestions for a fun summer bridge math before Saxon 4/5?
