  1. you have to remember as i stated she was in a private school at the time so it may have been the fault of the teacher. She did learn alot but did not seem to retain much and she hated hated math. Now she is using MEP and she loves it and the other day she said"Mommy I get this". We also do our own drill either with flashcards or games or online drills because she never completely memorized them but knows how to do them. I think Abeka is a very good program if it works for your child (then again I guess this is true of all programs)
  2. my 4th grader used Abeka in k-3 when she was in private school before we HS ans she did ok. I will say that you will have to do alot of memorization work on her basic facts on your own. She learned alot but they do move on before your child will have time to really memorize the facts.
  3. I was also wondering if they are free where do you find them?
  4. We use MEP here it is free online. You have to print out the studnt book and you can print out the teacher edition. Not sure where your child is with math can they reconize all their numbers up to 100? If so they can start MEP 1 there re also alot of free sites where you can just print out free worksheets to get you started. MEP is a great program and my girls are learning alot and really loving it. Below is link to website. There is also a yahoo group you can join to walk you through everything. http://www.cimt.plymouth.ac.uk/projects/mep/default.htm
  5. can i say both? I can quilt some and am mainly wanting something to tie in history to this. It can be a fictional story that will give them a good idea of that time period. We are currently doing world history so I just thought I would seize the opportunity.
  6. have you looked at MEP? My 6 and 9 year old are really loving it!
  7. my girls want to learn how to sew their own quilt and I was wanting to use this as a chance to pull in some American History anyone have any ideas?
  8. I appreciate your perspective but I do not believe in ADHD or ADD at all. I believe that every child is different and therefore each must be taught in different manners. I am not sure what child made the mold that we are excpected to match are children up against to be considered normal. We have 6 children and everyone of them is different and wonderful in their own ways. This is just my opinion and we are all entitled to them so again thank you for your thought.
  9. I have to say that this would have described my 9 year old to a tee. She did all these things and alot of people said she had ADHD and needed medication. But then I noticed hold on, when she is on the computer she can sit and stay focused for hours if I let her. She can sit and watch an entire movie for 2 hours. So how can she be unable to focus or sit still because in these times she did. Sooooooo I decided let's find something she likes. In her case it is nature we will wrap all our learning around what she likes. I through in math and grammar a little history and science and all is based on what she is interested in at the time. I can tell you this, doing this over the summer and at the start of the year has begun to make a real change. She is focusing more even on things she doesnt like. Keeping that in mind I make these things(what she doesnt really like) short. Maybe only 5 math problems that she can do on the board and things like that. Also, I had the same problem with chores and everyday things as you are describing, I know this is hard but some children do need you to hold their hands longer than others. I would stay in her room with her and point out one by one what needed to be done. I would go with her to the bathroom and say "ok get your toothbrush and toothpaste ok now brush your teeth while you hum happy birthday". Trust me I know that a child like this takes alot of extra attention and you will be tired all the time, But in my case these were things I was willing to try before I allowed someone to put her on medicine. After a little over two years of doing things like this she is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better. And she is happier because it was knid of like mom got off her back and got down with her on her level. I will pray for you and I wish you the best I hope any of my rambling will help.:grouphug:
  10. I am hoping for a few more reviews I was wondering this too.
  11. bought mine used already in binder and i love it that way.
  12. hahahahahahahahahahaha after the last few days we have had on our writing I needed this laugh. This is priceless!!!
  13. Love It, Love It, Nice to know I am not the only one. It is hard for me to believe that out of all her subjects writing is what is giving her the most trouble. I have just downloaded and printed the Nanowrimo novel site we looked over it and soooo far she is liking it. I also try very hard not to give in to the whining. and will be adding your idea of the new sentences. I just wanted her to love school again that is the main reason we decided to start HS. One last thought, does it matter if they write in cursive or type. She has been writing cursive since K so she knows how to write just wondering (if she finishes her typing class), if this would lessen her pain.
  14. this sounds like a good idea I spoke with dd about this problem and ask her what she thought would make things better and she said she likes to write stories just not random sentences or copying other sentences. How long of a story should they write at this age? Turned 9 this May.
  15. i dont think it is the mechanics this is just something she hates to do. She can write (physically) i feel just fine and like I said earlier when I made her she was done in 15 minutes but she told me she HATES writing so she will not do it unless I stand on top of her. So it is causing a lot of tension through the rest of our day. Is it worth it? And if I stop now will she think she has won the battle?
  16. by what way did you determine she had poor motor skills? This is about the limit my dd has now unless I really push her which leads to tears.
  17. Both of my girls are doing MEP this year and they love it! My 1st grader has started in year 1 and is moving along quickly. There are worksheets but if you follow the TE you also have lots of physical activity to support the lessons. She easily does a lesson a day and we will be moving to 2 a day next week. My 4th grader has had to start at the end of yr 2, begininnng of year 3, because she has never memorized her basic addition facts. She knows them only if she unit counts in her head (thank you PS). So we decided to back up for the begininng of this year and catch up on this and multiplications. But I would highly recommend you look at the MEP website and you can join the yahoo group and get tons of advice and ideas.
  18. ok, thanks for the ideas so far. I guess I didnt think 11 sentences was all that much and I should mention that after I lost my patience ( I know shame on me) and set the timer she managed to finish 6 of those sentences in 15 minutes, that is after taking almost a 1 1/2 to do the first 5 sentences. I really think she can do this she just hates it sooooo much that she thinks if she dawdles long enough I will give in a let her slide. This is what she has always done with the teachers in ps. So I am going to cut out the monthly book reports and the Scott Foresman writing. I will do WWE again and the study guide for the Lit she is reading. Oh, and I did just find a free online typing course for kids so she will start that next week. Right now to type would take longer than to write. Maybe this will work.
  19. Ok. this is our first year HS and my 4th grader is driving me crazy over writing. I have tried several different writing styles over the last 3 weeks and none are working. This morning she took almost 2 hours through tears and agony to write 11 sentences. She has Grammar, She has spelling, she also writes for her study guide with the current lit book she is listening to along with narration and she does a monthly book report on a book of her choice from the library. Should I just elimanate the writing program? I printed off and tried the sample of WWE and that was okay for the first time or so then it turned into the same thing. It is simply the physical act of writing she can't stand. What should I do, Please help this is ruining our entire day!
  20. MEP for math, you can get it for free onlinehttp://www.cimt.plymouth.ac.uk/projects/mep/default.htm WWE alphaphonics the rest of ours is christian based
  21. My younger two are the same age as your oldest and I have to say they give me the most help. we have a chore chart for each of them with thier names on it. It is split like this. Use a poster board list two columns at the top one for To Do and one for Done then i split it up for Morning, Lunch, Evening, and weekly.I created pockets out of cut poster board and packing tape. I list each chore seperately on an index card and place it in the pocket for when it needs to be done. The kids have been taught that when they finish thier chores they are to move the card to the done pocket. I check it a couple of times a day to make sure they are doing this. They get 2 dollars a week for doing things right. Other than that I try to do a little every day when I have breaks in between thier school and things seem to stay pretty tidy.
  22. Should you do a seperate Grammar program along with WWE for 4th grader?
  23. Have you looked at MEP? My girls are loving this I also practice the basics with them over and over until they get them then we move on. But i also use MEP to give them the mental math and reinforce what we are doing. They LOVE IT. And it is free on the web. There is also a MEP yahoo group that can walk you through all of it. Below is the link to MEP http://ceure.buffalostate.edu/~csmp/CSMP%20Program/index.html
