  1. We are doing Fundamentals of Math this year and Dd12 has been doing fine. However, we started chapter 2 today and she needed to write decimal numbers in expanded form using exponents. She totally hit a wall!! Thing is I am unsure how to explain this to her. I know how to do it and what it means but I cant figure out how to make her understand it. She seems to be having trouble understanding the decimal place value period. I dont know how she passed the intro section on decimals but she definitely does not understand what the numbers to the right of the decimal mean!! I was never taught math from a conceptual point so I may not really understand it either. So how to explain this to her??? I was thinking of getting the LOF Decimal books as the Fraction book is what finally made fractions click for her. Any other suggestions??
  2. Can someone link me to study guide or workbook for this book? Thanks!
  3. Has anyone planned out this course? I am looking over everything and would like to make a basic schedule for Dd15 to stick to but I am unsure how to space out the lessons. I see where it says to allow 1-2 days per lesson.
  4. This is a great list. http://www.guesthollow.com/homeschool/printables/files/puritybooktitles.pdf
  5. We have used the Guerber/Miller books and really enjoyed them.
  6. Dd15 has really struggled this year in 9th grade. I have realized that even though she is a very smart girl, she lacks the solid skills on how to learn or how to study. I am working with her on a few things but could really use a good guide for me and her. Any suggestions?
  7. Ok here is what I see from there site. Combining, Parts in the Bible and Theology section, Logic and Worldview; Opinions???? 7th - The Fallacy Detective, by Nathaniel Bluedorn and Hans Bluedorn How To Read a Book, by Mortimer Adler and Chares Van Doren How to Be Your Own Selfish Pig, by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay – Also says it is under review for year 7. This does seem a bit young to me for this book. 8th How To Read a Book, by Mortimer Adler and Chares Van Doren A Ready Defense: The Best of Josh McDowell ($), OR The Case for Christ, by Lee Strobel 9th Christian Life, by Sinclair Ferguson Love is a Fallacy, byMax Schulman 10th Knowing God, by J. I. Packer How to Read Slowly, by James Sire Worldview ** The Deadliest Monster, by Jeff Baldwin *** How Should We Then Live?, by Francis Schaeffer Under review: * Thinking Like A Christian 11th Worldview* Seven Men Who Rule the World from the Grave, by David Breese ** Amusing Ourselves to Death, by Neil Postman *** Modern Fascism: Liquidating the Judeo-Christian Worldview, by Gene Edward Veith The Thinking Toolbox: Thirty-Five Lessons That Will Build Your Reasoning Skills, by Nathaniel and Hans Bluedorn 12th The Upside of Irrationality, by Dan Ariely (optional; the Advisory has not previewed this yet)
  8. I dont have any advice but would love to do this too! I was just asking about logic on the HS board but no response. This is exactly what I would like to do. I have dd14 who has done Fallacy Detective and dd12 who hasn't started any logic yet. I will definitely be watching this.
  9. Dd14 has only used Fallacy Detective and several Mind Bender books. I think this is where we want to start with her formal logic studies. I have no experience teaching or even studying logic. Will we need the DVD's with this course or are the books enough to understand the program?
  10. Do you find the Teacher's book needed or just answer keys?
  11. Do you need a text along with it? Is a text required I guess I should say?
  12. I have played with it a bit but I am sticking with Scholaric. For a couple bucks Scholaric gives me what I need. Tracking of hours, rescheduling, adding sequence of lessons at one time and duplicate posting for multiple students. Girls access it through their tablets through out the day to check off things as they are done or to go over notes I have on lessons.
  13. Any chance this is already out there somewhere so I don't have to try and reinvent the wheel??
  14. Dd15 will be taking Chemistry this year. She has tried a few online and/or video classes and she just does not do well with them. She needs that live interaction with me. So, here is my problem; I do not remember the first thing about chemistry!!! So I need a chemistry class that will hold my hand. A solid teacher's book that will help me teach her and myself. Any suggestions would be great!!! Thanks :)
  15. We want to use the Funda syllabus for Dd15 American History next year. Want to make sure I get the correct resources for it. Which TC course is it referring to? Also is there a list of the extra's (DVD's) added in anywhere?
  16. Hmmmm think I am leaning towards Destinos. Free is doable!! Looks like even with purchasing the needed textbook and workbook I will still be under $100! Community college would be great but we live about 1 hour from it so by the time I figure in gas and time it doesn't seem so attractive.
  17. Sooooooo for minimum 120 hours teacher instruction at $9 per hour that is $1080!!!! Am I missing something???? Surely there must be a more affordable way.
  18. How many hours for a full year credit with Livelingua? Trying to figure out what total cost would be.
  19. Just wondering what you think? I like that is has the video examples with each section. I am not sure how it lines up with average 7th grade level. Can someone with a bit more knowledge look at this and tell me what you think? Thanks http://bms.tipton-county.com/home/textbook-access
  20. I want to create dd11 a set of task cards for her science next year. She wants to dig into Space travel. She has not had much Earth Science so I thought I would tie these in together. I need some help on the topics and ideas for the cards. Once finished I will be happy to share. We do take a Young Earth creationist approach to our Science but I am not really looking to include this in this study. So any ideas or thought on topics?
