  1. Not really related to geography, but a fun read-aloud picture books for kids is the story Tikki Tikki Tembo.
  2. :iagree: You can find a lot of great resources at the Prufrock Press website. I looked at the Red Herrings book at a curriculum fair & didn't really like it. Another option (not exactly the same, but requiring similar reasoning skills, imo) is a series of books called Stories to Solve by George Shannon & Peter Sis. (We found these at our library.)
  3. Clever idea. Thanks for sharing. For those who do explain all the reasons to be careful, make sure to mention that sometimes the person might pose as a security person &/or accuse them of shoplifting or something. Just mentioning this because I remember a case like that a year ago where 2 boys went in (buddy system), and they kept their heads enough to yell & get out when this guy approached them saying he was 'undercover store security' and telling them that he thought they shoplifted something. I could see some situation like that throwing a kid off guard, kwim? For my ds, it's similar to what others have said. I try to find a family restroom, sometimes the men's is ok (depends on situation), or sometimes he goes in the ladies room w/ dd & me (which he has to do if he's waiting on us anyway because I'm not letting him wait outside the restroom for us yet -- in those cases he waits just inside the ladies' room door).
  4. :smilielol5:ROFL!!! So... did the waiter get a big tip... or not??? ;)
  5. Yeah. I think my kids think that 5 minutes is actually an hour (or so). "Kids, get ready to say goodbye to your friends, we're leaving in 5 minutes." That repeats off & on for another hour before we actually leave. ROFL. In spite of that, I'm rarely the one initiating conversation when out, though I (usually) don't mind when someone else does.
  6. Origins Ginger Souffle Bath & Body Works' Eucalyptus Spearmint Lotion (love, love, love this, esp. for my feet -- may be too strong as an overall body lotion) Avon's Vita Moist Hand Lotion (great for my cracked, dry hands & it smells good too) And, I always love to have the lotion that goes w/ my perfume I'm wearing. Perfumes that I love: Eau The Blanc (White Tea) by Bulgari (my favorite perfume & lotion ever) Shi by Alfred Sung Cabotine by Parfums Gres Knowing by Estee Lauder Just remember, like the Loreal commercial, you're worth it! :D
  7. Good chocolate, but that's considered a staple food in our house. (Yes, really, lol.) Sometimes cookies or maybe ice cream. Sometimes something special from the bakery (small cake or pastry).
  8. :iagree: Definitely get a good decongestant. And, have him use Earplanes too (to relieve any ear pressure, which he may be feeling as a result of sinus issues). Earplanes are great! (My mom has always had major sinus issues & flying on planes was pure torture for her until she found earplanes.) They can be bought over the counter at most any drugstore or places like Target, WalMart, etc.... I don't normally use earplanes when flying, but if I ever have a cold or sinus issues when flying, I always make sure to use earplanes.
  9. :iagree:  That is too funny. We fell off the Prima Latina wagon earlier this year, so this is especially apropos for me. :001_huh: I'm still giggling.... (P.S. Did sil even notice that the response wasn't in Latin???) ;)
  10. We haven't done anything like that yet, but I'd definitely request tourist literature from the province/state you are studying. Then, you could cut it up & use it on your notebook pages.
  11. I've just skimmed through the responses & I don't think anyone has mentioned the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series by Rick Riordan. Get the rest of the Redwall books too, lol. My dd has loved that entire series. (And my nephew too...) This has been a fun thread. I'm getting some great ideas, so thanks everyone!
  12. My dh (he does most of the cooking)! Other than that, I love my little coffee scoop because I know exactly how many scoops of coffee beans I need w/ it. It's an old Tupperware scoop (my grandmother sold Tupperware for years & years), and it's a neat reminder of my grandmother too. We also use a good egg slicer a lot. All our orange Alessi pieces in our kitchen are my favorites, even if I'm not the cook. I love my little orange Alessi kitchen timer because, when the unfortunate occasion arises & I have to cook, I definitely have to stick to using the timer (vs. burning the food). LOL. (Guess I should mention a fire extinguisher & a smoke alarm as important kitchen tools too? ;) And, no, I've never had to actually use the fire extinguisher on the food, even though we've heard our overly-sensitive smoke alarm quite a few times.)
  13. All the ones that have been mentioned so far are great. In addition, we've enjoyed many of the Smart about Art series and the Artists in Their Time series (for older kids, imo). The Adventures in Art series is another great series for older kids. Some picture books we have enjoyed: Uncle Andy's (about Andy Warhol -- fun story) Dinner at Magritte's (love this one!) Hokusai: The Man Who Painted a Mountain Picasso and Minou the You Can't Take a Balloon... books An overview book that is neat: Cave Paintings to Picasso
  14. Staples or crazy glue? ;) Um, hmmm. Guess you're looking for a more practical suggestion. Could you take them to a shoe repair place & have them shorten the strap a little more or something (to make it stay on your foot better/be tighter)? Why is it seeming to come off only one foot vs. both (?) -- maybe that would help you figure out the root of the problem?
  15. Don't really know a lot about them, but an obvious (big) difference is price: AO is free (at least the planning/scheduling part) & Living Books Curriculum is fairly pricey (imo). Also, fyi, if you are interested in additional AO-related resources, do a search on yahoo groups as I think there are various groups. I know there is one for AO copywork. Sorry I can't help more. I'd love to hear any comments from someone using Living Books Curriculum, but I think it's also fairly new -- maybe in the past year or two (??)
  16. Well, I finally just added one, lol. Maybe I'll keep it for awhile. It took me long enough to put one up. But, maybe tomorrow I'll be fickle. ;) BTW, I really like the new one of yours!
  17. I was just getting ready to recommend it too, lol! Great game, best w/ 4 or more people playing. We love it & have a blast. Thanks, everyone, for all the other recommendations. There are some great ideas here!
  18. At that age? The Outsiders. Hands down. I think I was 12 or 13 when I read The Outsiders over & over. It really spoke to me. It blew me away. I absolutely loved that book. My copy was very worn (and much loved). At an older age (high school/college), my 2 faves were: Heart of Darkness and The Count of Monte Cristo.
  19. I got my niece (5yo) & nephew (2.5yo) each a Bilibo for Christmas. Apparently, they love them & play w/ them constantly. My in-laws just returned from visiting them & even the in-laws were talking about how much the kids play w/ their bilibos. I'm glad it was such a hit. I ordered the ones I sent from www.magiccabin.com Bilibo Another thing that is usually a hit w/ little kids is play food & some dishes or pots. Or, as others have mentioned, books (of course). LOL.
  20. Well, I just posted on a different baby thread. LOL. Usually I give favorite board books that my dc loved &/or a baby sleep sack (haven't used this particular company, but this is the type of thing I used & loved, loved, loved w/ my dc). I'd definitely give the older child a gift & think that's always a sweet & thoughtful thing to do. You could always go w/ a thoughtful gift for the older child & a practical one for the new baby (diapers & diaper cream, ...).
  21. I second (or third) the suggestion of books that have been hits w/ your own kids. Or something else that has been a hit for you as a mom &/or for your kids. Personally, I loved having the baby sleep sacks (they weren't as common when my dc were infants) & highly recommend them to everyone. So, they are often the item I choose to give. I haven't used this particular company, but these are similar to the type I used: baby sleep sacks I think you can't go wrong w/ choosing something that you, yourself, found to be invaluable w/ your babies (and a note or explanation as to why you loved said item).
  22. If you keep your feet firmly on the ground, you’ll have trouble putting on your pants!
  23. Nothing to add to the thread, but I almost spit out my drink when I read this! ROFL! Ah, poor old Ken gets sooooo little respect. ;)
  24. Also, another nice picture book series is the one by Robert San Souci: Young Arthur, Young Lancelot, Young Guinevere, and Young Merlin. Howard Pyle's version of Robin Hood is great. Another version of King Arthur: Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Hahaha. :D
