  1. Well I'm not enjoying that my 9 year 💯 has a better grasp on grammar than I do. I mean, I'm happy for him, but I feel so dumb. How did I get this far in life. 😩 So, I love what we are doing for grammar and writing, but I hate grammar and writing. Love the curriculum, but the subject makes me miserable. I'll take math any day.
  2. Here is what we have so far Dec - 2 hours (2 days) Jan. - 30 hours Feb. - 27 hours Total - 59 hours I had a goal of a total of 1 hour each day. We were just 2 hours short. Anyway, never as long as I have lived have I ever spent 59 hours outside during winter so it's a win. Next month I have a goal of 2 hours per day! How are you doing?
  3. Oh lots to think about. I definitely didn't mean books only. My boys love the hands on stuff.
  4. See, this part right here is like the one thing that makes me worry. It's so hard to imagine that you can just switch over to a more rigorous approach. It's good to hear that it does happen.
  5. I was just reading the thread started by Meadowlark about just reading book for science and history for the elementary years. I have been considering this for my family for a while. We currently use Apologia for science and I always check out related library books, but pretty much find them to be just what we read about in Apologia. We do just read Apologia and do some projects. No notebooks or writing. I'm definitely confident in this option, but I do have a few questions. I know there are lots of good choices for the early years, Let's Read and Find Out, Magic School Bus. Is there a good book series aimed at the older group? My oldest is just 9, just thinking ahead. I also get myself overwhelmed planning. I always want to get ALL the books and I just overdo it. Is there a particular set of children's encyclopedia's you use as a spine that has all the major topics? Are there any really well done booklists out there? Also, do you do it as a read aloud or do you have the kids do the reading?
  6. Meadowlark, thank you! I've been thinking this over myself and have several questions for those that go this route. I'm off to start my own thread.
  7. Haha, it took me a while too. My kids definitely feel good when I share the chore of reading with them. My boys also like to read together like this.
  8. I'm pretty excited about it. I LOVED Math Facts That Stick.
  9. Yes, I'd give anything if I had realized this with my first. His birthday was the actual cut off to put him in K the year he was 4, turning 5 a few months after we started school. I put so much pressure on us both. He did great, but my I would change it all if I could because he wasn't necessarily ready. Sigh.
  10. Haha I'm on most challenging kid as well, so it should be a fun year. I am so thankful she has an October bday and she wine almost 6 when we start. Good luck lol!
  11. I'm so excited to be doing k with my 3rd. I was stressed out with my first, we did not enjoy it like we should have. I was sick and pregnant with my 2nd so it was bare minimum. I plan on doing Abeka Phonics Kate Snow Math ( I can never remember what it's called) A Reason For Handwriting Five in a Row And whatever fun shows, books and activities we decide to get into.
  12. I'm SO happy for you!!! Our parent reunion is March 7th!!! We are SO excited!!!! And YES there is just something about your momma! My mom is such a social creature and she has been missing life. My dad and I are very content introverts.
  13. I really can't believe I have a 5th grader. 😲 Math, continue on with BJU Math 5 and work through Kate Snow Division Facts That Stick Reading - Options include reading from Mensa booklist, MP booklist, VP History booklist and anything he is interested in. We will just skip around here. Spelling - thinking of moving to Spelling Power Grammar - We may pick up with FLL 4 Writing - Finishing up Treasured Conversations and onto IDK what Typing - don't know what program yet History - he has asked to go back to VP whatever the one after middle ages is, Early Explorers or something Science - Apologia something, he and his brother are currently trying to agree on something Bible - IDK, possibly VP You Teach Geography - Highlights Which Way USA + other stuff P.E. - 1,000 hour challenge 😆
  14. My 9 year old is working through Treasured Conversations. We like it quite well. I can tell writing is not his favorite, but he is doing well. I'm not much of a writer either. My question is what next? I have my sights set on WWS when the time is right, but I'm pretty sure he won't be ready for that until later, so I'll need something in between.
  15. Guys! I had to stop and think what grade was next. I certainly haven't thought about next year. It seems for now it's more do the next thing or back to old favorites. Let's see 🤔 Math - BJU 3 and Kate Snow Subtraction Facts That Stick WWE 2 FLL 2 Spelling - idk I was thinking of Spelling Power Reading from the Mensa Book List and MP booklist History - My boys have asked to go back to VP so we will be on Early Explorers or whatever it's called. Science - The boys are currently debating this. My 7 year old wants Apologia flying creatures and the 9 year old wants anything but flying creatures. Geography - Highlights Which Way US Have I missed anything? 🤔 Ah yes, something for Bible. We didn't love BJU this year. I'm looking at VP you teach.
  16. Ok I figured, but my staple felt so bumpy, I was worried it would tear. Anyway I found a sturdier envelope.
  17. This is dumb and I'm overthinking, but can stapled papers go in the mail?
  18. We mostly use Apologia for science and they don't have anything for earth science, just astronomy. Any suggestions? I'm hoping with be book based rather than a textbook. Thanks. ETA my boys are 7 and 9. Also ETA I don't care if it is Christian YE or Old or secular. We are good with just discussing what we believe compared to what we read.
  19. How funny you would say that. I never took pics on my phone before the pandemic because my camera is better quality. I only started using my phone to send pics to family.
  20. Yes! I remember thinking we would be back to normal by summer and I wondered how on earth we'd stay home for a couple months.
  21. I know the feeling. It's coming up on my March birthdays. Last year we had ds birthday and then had a combined March party and were planning on dd birthday outing and then covid. It's a strange feeling.
