  1. What do you think you will switch to?
  2. This will be for my dd who will be in first grade next year. She used Math Lessons for a Living Education 1 for Kindergarten. I am just curious which one of these everyone else prefers.
  3. Between Math Mammoth and CLE which one do you like better?
  4. I ordered Rightstart the other day because so many people that use LOE recommended it. Since then I have read some reviews of people whose children struggled with it, or just didn't get it. I am getting really worried now if I made the wrong choice. Can I please hear some good reviews from people who have used it, and it has worked for your children? I ordered level A for both children so that they can both get a solid math base (and my 7.5 year old has been a little slower learning, and has had some learning difficulties).
  5. I am going to be starting SOTW with my just turned 6 year old my my 7.5 year old. Can you recommend a good science program for these ages? I want something age appropriate, and not too wordy.
  6. That might have been a little of an exaggeration. It feels like it sometimes though! We usually start school at 900 or 930, and LOE takes until 1030 or 1100. Usually that is because there is a card game, and the kids are having so much fun I let them play for a while. At 1030 or 1100 we usually take a break, and then its usually time for me to make lunch. So it does seem LOE takes all morning. It does cover handwriting, reading, and spelling though. They are learning cursive, so we do spend some time working on letters, combining cursive letters to make words, etc. I'm sure we could get it done quicker, but I don't want learning to be something we rush through to get done, and then all the love of learning is lost. Math is usually after lunch.
  7. Neither of my children seem to enjoy the stories. Today my daughter had to use the place value village and mat to count to 45, and afterwards she had to do the same to 27. She moaned and complained the whole time. Neither of them likes doing the place value exercises. They both love and adore Logic of English Foundations. I would love to find something for math that they enjoyed. I know everything is not going to always be fun, but I would prefer it be something they dread to do everyday. I wonder if Rightstart or Horizons would be better. We did use Horizons in K, and they never complained. I am intrigued by Rightstart, but kind of scared to teach it. LOE already takes up most of the morning hours.
  8. I just heard of The Good and the Beautiful curriculum, and my younger two place in the K level. We are currently using Logic of English A (almost done). TGatB looks very interesting, but I'm worried if it will teach them to read/spell as good as LOE would. I agree some things looked a little random. What spelling are you using?
  9. We are currently using Math Lessons for a Living Education for my 6 and 7.5 year old. They are both so-so about it (not really liking it), and I am not sure I love it either. I am considering switching to CLE or Math U See instead. Does anyone have any input on these three math programs? TIA!
  10. Between All About Reading or Logic of English which one do you like the most?
  11. This is good to know. I have already felt that A & B has a public school feel.
  12. My younger two are currently using LOE Foundations. After B I am considering if we should continue with C & D, or switch to Reading Lessons through Literature. The kids like the games in LOE, but I am fine with switching to a program that doesn't have them. Do you think we would be better off finishing LOE C & D, or switching to RLTL? If we switched to RLTL we would also use ELTL.
  13. I recently discovered Build Your Library, and I am drawn to the first grade program. I am going back and forth between BYL, and just following SOTW with the Activity Guide. Which one would you recommend?
  14. I wouldn't use TT either. When we tried it my kids had zero retention. I love Math Lessons for a Living Education, CLE, and Math U See.
  15. Which curriculum would you choose for phonics..... A - Logic of English A & B Cursive B - OPGTR, ETC, Bob Books, Handwriting without Tears C - AAR
  16. Can one jump right into Abeka's first grade phonics if they didn't do Abeka's K phonics? My 7 year old can read cvc words, blends, and words with sh, ch, th, but he hasn't learned long vowel sounds yet.
  17. I used WWW years ago when my oldest was in first grade and second grade. My daughter used EIW 6 a couple years ago, and she LOVED it. Of those two I prefer EIW, and think it is a much better program. IEW's SWI-B would also be a great option.
  18. Those of you that have used the Great Courses for American History can you share how they work. I have never used them before. Do you just watch the lectures, or are there questions that go along with them? I would love to know which ones were your favorites for American History.
  19. Has anyone used Bennets America: The Last Best Hope for your American History credit? If so, how did you use it? It looks like there are three volumes, so I am not sure how I could schedule them to get them all done in one school year.
  20. For phonics I am planning to use Explode the Code and either The Reading Lesson or Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading. Which one would you recommend for a child that is already reading CVC words and some blends. He isn't reading fluently, and still sounds out most words.
  21. Math Lessons for a Living Education or Math U See would work great for him.
  22. MM is an epic fail for some children. I would also highly suggest Math U See or Math Lessons for a Living Education.
  23. My daughter has done several years of IEW, and we are going to be finishing WWS 1 this year for 8th grade. I just feel like she needs more instruction in essay writing, and research papers. Before considering OM's Lit & Comp I was planning WWS 2 (I know technically its for junior high, but even SWB has said it can be used for older kids if they will benefit from the skills) or EIW 9 so she could get more explicit instruction.
