  1. We are in Oakton in Fairfax County.
  2. I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
  3. A BIG thank you:001_smile: for the comments/explanations regarding my original plan for dd 5th grade-- see below. BLUE -- still deciding and researching based on feedback. I am cobbling History for 3rd and 5th and I would like to cobble Science. RED -- Definite Change -- Will use with 3rd grade twins so I can cobble History. I am following the excellent advice from someone to 'move away' from the sequence that my dks had in ps. MATH - Saxon 6/5 SCIENCE - Real Chemistry OR RS4K Chemistry I (Feedback, experiences, pls be specific) HISTORY - Biblioplan -- Medieval Ren Ref. LATIN - Christiana? - this will be Madison's 3rd year of Latin -- Going to look at Latin Form (Mem) WORLD GEOGRAPHY - "Mapping the World" by Heartlite and "Geography through Literature" by Hollings LANGUAGE ARTS - Small Group IEW Class; "Worldly Wise 3000" LITERATURE - to include: The Door in the Wall; The Bronze Bow; Beowulf; King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table; Anne of Green Gables; Island of the Blue Dolphins; BIBLE and POETRY/MEMORIZATION - Undecided - seriously considering ALL of the excellent suggestions I was given. If you are still with me, THANKS! I would love suggestions on Science - I really liked the Science Books I saw on Pandia -- I would like to do Chemistry and Life Science for all three kids. I loved the Chem kits on Pandia. Thanks -- I will not be back on-line till tonight. We are putting together a 'guest room' to accomodate the onslaught of houseguests we are having next week. Funny, no one came to visit when we lived in a HUGE house. Now that we are in a teeny, weeny, little house, EVERYONE wants to come and visit.....DH and I are sorting through approx. 75 Rubbermaid Storage Containers and putting the 'keepers' in the attic (which is also teeny weeny). ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead: THAT about says it all! Have to go -- DS just dropped the measuring tape into the toilet AFTER doing his business --I can only guess WHAT he was doing! LATER!:banghead::banghead::banghead:
  4. Thank you for that! :001_huh: Do you have suggestions for anything else for that grade level - any experience with RS4K?
  5. Thank you -- I know my dh thinks I have lost my mind, but after the debacle two years ago with the twins and homeschooling, I am taking the time to have a definite plan -- and I am definitely able to fly by the seat of my pants, change horses mid-stream, etc., BUT only if I know that there is a 'real' plan in place. Thank you again --
  6. Here is what I have tentatively plannedfor my fifth grade dd - who is an extremely hard-working, studious, conscientious, and pleasant young lady; Madison is going to take a small group IEW writing class - she began IEW in third grade and is doing wonderfully with it -- I will make an attempt to organize this list so it is easy to read. MATH - Saxon 6/5 SCIENCE - Real Chemistry OR RS4K Chemistry I (Feedback, experiences?) HISTORY - VP Ren & Ref LATIN - Christiana (I think) - this will be Madison's 3rd year of Latin WORLD GEOGRAPHY - "Mapping the World" by Heartlite and "Geography through Literature" by Hollings LANGUAGE ARTS - Small Group IEW Class; "Worldly Wise 3000" LITERATURE - to include: The Door in the Wall; The Bronze Bow; Beowulf; King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table; Anne of Green Gables; Island of the Blue Dolphins; BIBLE - ? POETRY/MEMORIZATION - ? I appreciate your feedback. I will work on the twins' third grade stuff over the weekend or the beginning of next week -- I really do need to take a break from this. A great holiday weekend to everyone!
  7. Everything you've written is SO helpful! In fact, minutes before I read your most recent post about combining Science for the 3rd and 5th, I was looking over Apologia text books and asking myself WHY NOT do just that and give myself a break. :iagree: You are correct --with my kids coming from a classroom and with me being a classroom teacher, I do think within that framework, and I am starting to tell myself that I don't have to do that. You've been a big help! Thank you!
  8. I've been reading all the posts I can find about curr choices for 3rd & 5th grade, and I am making progress with what I will order and use. Tonight, I went to the website of the ps (classical Christian) that my three were attending to look at their scope and sequence and to refresh my memory. I would welcome any suggestions on Medieval History and World Geography curr for my 5th grade dd. And, for my 3rd graders (the twins), I would welcome suggestions on Ancient Greece & Rome curr. I intend to use Apologia for Chemistry (5th grader) and Life Science (3rd Graders) as that is what they have been using in school and seem confortable with it. Thanks to all the great information here, I have made some choices and I am getting closer to completing our plan for September, and I am much less :willy_nilly: thanks -- and a happy holiday weekend to all!
  9. My .02 (and History is actually one of my BIG question marks still)...I have used "A Child's Story of America" (cannot think of the author) from Veritas Press with excellent results. It is chronological and a great supplement or stand alone for the lower grades for US History. I used it with my twins when we were doing first grade - we did Ancient Egypt and CSOA. CSOA is not gory but does speak to the issue of evil and its effect if a people turn their back on the Lord. The chapters are short (I copied every chapter for my fourth grade class when I was in the classroom) and there are excellent questions at the end of each chapter. I bought mine at VP. Hope this helps. Mariann
  10. Hi - I followed Elizabeth's suggestion and I have been reading about the program on the veritas press website. I am intrigued, and I think that with VP, me, and two IEW instructors I've been emailing, I will have the subjects covered in which I DO want help and structure. I know I am great with Math -- no problem there -- so I think I have a plan forming. Mariann
  11. Thankfully, I found the conversation about CC and I am still wading through it AND finding it helpful. My questions are directed to anyone who is in CC and plans on staying in it b/c they experience has been more positive than not. Sorry this is SO long - (pls bear with me): I did h-s my twins when they were in first grade -- it was a very stressful time in our lives and NOT the best time to be h-s-ing anyone. Our then 3rd grade DD was in a wonderful classical Christian private school. The twins, and DD went to the wonderful school this past school year and I taught at another school and we were happy - except for the huge $$$$ for tuition for the three kids and the miniscule $$$$$ I made teaching at a small Christian school...and all the running around. I read the CC website (I am looking at the programs in Reston, VA OR Fairfax VA so if you have personal experience with either one of those, I would love to speak with you) and (please correct me if I am wrong), came to the conclusion that the once a week CC session would actually be the 'supplement' and perhaps 'follow up' to what the kids and I would do the rest of the week. I would welcome following someone else's lesson plan (I go in one hundred different directions with curriculum AND I make myself and everyone else crazy with it) as it would give me the structure I need in dealing with three VERY intelligent and strong willed children. It is my hope that the CC group would provide the framework that I would work within the other days of the week. I would so appreciate hearing from someone who is in CC and can say to me, 'yes, there is a good possibility that CC can provide what you are looking for' OR 'no! You are way off base and cc will not do that for you.' Apologies for the length of this -- thanks in advance -- Mariann
  12. THANKS to everyone who replied! I am a subscriber to sharenet and that is a great resource. Last night I emailed 'classical conversations,' 'mclean homeschooling group,' 'covenant,' and Eva Goldstein (teaches IEW in Ashburn)...and I did come across the RUST offrings which I will look into further. Decision time, apparently! Thanks again -- Mariann
  13. Hi -- I've been absent from this board for almost two years, BUT now that I am considering h-s-ing this fall, I have some questions, and I know that I will get excellent info from the people on this Board. I would like to homeschool all three children (10yrs and 8 yr old twins) this fall, BUT I am looking into co-ops in Fairfax County and Loudoun County, Virginia. Does anyone have info about their particular favorites or any experiences they can share with me? Thanks in Advance -- Mariann:confused:
