That quote by C.S. Lewis is one of my favorites (I use it on my Facebook page) and Jonah Goldberg used it in his book "Liberal Fascism." It is because of the topics covered in that book that I say I would not even want the government to be in charge of the rating system you discussed. ...Trying to not be too political here (so I don't get kicked out...), but I firmly believe in LAISSEZ-FAIRE! You've got good ideas and I know there are millions more people with great ideas too, so let US fix our own problems and the politicians can take a vacation!

AiG is very sound, but have you looked into the Apologia Exploring Creation series? It's very comprehensive.

They have new methods for removing claws now. They use a laser and the recovery time is much quicker and a little less painful. (I would never recommend removing them if the cat goes outside, though.) If the cat isn't tearing your furniture apart, then I wouldn't bother. Being "tempermental" is just a cat being a cat. They aren't designed to be needy and approval-seeking. They'd be dog, if that was the case. ;)

Young dc and chores. Help!
Eruditio_Academy replied to Tabrett's topic in General Education Discussion Board
The rule in our house is that as soon as you can walk you can do chores. But don't be scared, it's not as "bad" as it sounds. My sons started out by having to pick up their toys before bedtime--which I help them with and, as they become more proficient, they pick up more and more on their own. (They also aren't given a large amount of toys at any one time, so the cleaning up doesn't overwhelm them). The other job that they do is taking the dirty laundry from their room and putting it in the laundry hamper every morning after breakfast. After meals, my older son (3 yrs)takes care of dishes, washes the table, and both boys clean up the floor. I don't expect perfection, but they're getting a valuable learning experience and they have a good attitude (most of the time) about chores because they've been doing them from as long as they can remember. They are two very active, not perfectly behaved boys, but they do pretty well in this area and they feel that they are a vital part of the family unit. Dr. John Rosemond has written MANY, MANY books about child-rearing and devotes very large portions to chores and why they are such an important part of a child's upbringing (RESPECT, RESPONSIBLITY, & RESOURCEFULNESS). Read "A Family of Value" by Rosemond for more information. Hope this doesn't sound "preachy." It's hard to convey everything in a quick message. -
Back to Square 1....What to do for K phonics??
Eruditio_Academy replied to 3Rivers's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We are doing a combination of OPGTR, Explode the Code and the Bob Books. I find it makes for a nicely rounded program. If you are interested, here's a little chart I did to coordinate them all... Ordinary Parent.zip Ordinary Parent.zip -
New and in need of history help!
Eruditio_Academy replied to mom2koh's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We are going to do a combination of SOTW and Veritas Press History. The SOTW gives you a big picture view of early history, while the VP gives you a really indepth view of Biblical history. I think your daughter would really enjoy SOTW, too, because it's written like a story. Here is a website for combining SOTW and VP. http://www.redshift.com/~bonajo/SOTWmenu.htm -
I have been using "The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading," but I wanted to also incorporate the Explode the Code series and BOB books as additional reinforcement, so I developed this chart. It's not perfect, but maybe someone out there will find it useful. Enjoy and God bless! (Please see "Attached Files" for the complete chart.) Ordinary Parent.zip Ordinary Parent.zip
