  1. Congratulations to you both! That's a great accomplishment. Which exams did she take?
  2. One of my goals, when I began homeschooling 9 years ago, was to instill in my children a love for learning. I try to keep this in mind each year as I'm choosing new curricula. I do ask for their input, and when possible, choose materials that appeal to them. The good thing is, there are so many choices out there now, that I haven't found it difficult to find thorough, challenging programs that fit my kids' learning styles and personalities. I feel our school year goes much more smoothly when ALL of us enjoy what we're working with.
  3. I am a fan of Getting Started With Latin. It has really helped make Latin less intimidating for my kids. I use it along with Henle for my 13yo, and with LfC for my son. That said, I don't feel it is "meaty" enough by itself to issue a half-credit for it. I think it is wonderful to use as an introduction, or even alongside another program.
  4. I second this. My 5yo dd is now wearing Hannas my 13yo dd used to wear. Their clothes and pj's have held up remarkably well...even the colors still look great.
  5. Well, I look at it like this: Education is a life-long process, and not something that is achieved in 12 years, 16 years, or more. I will never feel my education is complete; I know there will always be more to learn. I look forward to learning something new each day. It's part of what makes life so exciting! P.S. I never picked up the Cordelia reference before, either.....Thanks for pointing that out!
  6. That it does! Plus it has internet access, and all those cool apps. :001_smile:
  7. Yes, you are able to view photos, movies, shows, etc., on the Nanos. Plus, if you purchase a movie or show from iTunes, not only can it be uploaded to the iPod Nanos and/or iPod Touches in your household, you can also view it on your computer.
  8. Only the iPod Touch is WiFi compatible. You don't have to worry about your son going on the internet with a Nano. My 10 yo ds does have a Nano. I do screen his music. I also make sure the volume is not turned up too high when he listens with earbuds. That's probably my biggest concern with iPods. There are a number of free educational podcasts appropriate for children on the iTunes site, so he can have more than just music on his iPod. All of us, except our 5 year old, have and get a lot of use out of our iPods.
  9. I hope all of you feel better soon!
  10. I understand that. I certainly agree they should be held accountable if charges of racism are proved, private club or not.
  11. While I realize discrimination does still exist, I do find it hard to believe, and hard to understand. Furthermore, the argument that it's a private club and therefore they can make their own rules, does not make it any less disturbing to me that this incident took place.
  12. We have levels 1 & 2. I think it's a fun way to introduce young children to Spanish. The crafts, recipes, and bits of history are fun, however, imo, it's best used by the K-4 crowd.
  13. My daughter will be starting 9th grade this fall, and, yes, we will be continuing at home. I'm still in the process of finalizing plans for her, and am looking forward to starting a new chapter in our homeschooling journey.
  14. Oh, absolutely! There are extensive book list suggestions, covering biographies, historical fiction, literature, and more. The timelines are wonderful, too. I have to say, this is one of my favorite homeschool resources. Lots of great info in this book.
  15. I have never taken this precaution and haven't had any problems with my glass cooktop. I wonder if it's a brand thing? I've had my GE Spectra Performance Profile for almost 9 years now, and while it doesn't always look pretty, it has held up remarkably well considering the treatment it receives here...
  16. Historical fiction is probably my favorite genre! In addition to the Ken Follet books already mentioned, here are some others I've enjoyed: Annette Vallon by James Tipton----takes place before and during the French revolution Katherine by Anya Seton---one of my all-time favorites!----set in 14th century England Lady of the Roses by Sandra Worth---about the War of the Roses Daughter of York by Ann Easter Smith--chronicles the life of Margaret, sister to King Edward IV Abundance by Sena Jeter---fascinating glimpse of Marie Antoinette's life I, Elizabeth by Rosalind Miles--novel about Queen Elizabeth The Eight and its sequel, The Fire by Katherine Neville If I can think of some others, I'll post them.....Happy Reading!
  17. I've had one for quite a few years. I just showed them my homeschool association card and received the discount card immediately. I do have to renew it each year. I've never had any problem at any B&N receiving the discount, and I've used my card at stores in several states.
  18. I like Critical Thinking's Word Roots. We have the cd-rom versions, but I believe they're also available in a workbook format.
  19. My son, who also enjoys building and creating, has gotten a lot of inspiration from The Dangerous Book for Boys by Hal Iggulden. Lots of creative projects in it......everything from building a go cart to constructing a tree house. And although my son hasn't tackled either of those two projects yet, he did make a bow and arrow from instuctions found in this book.
  20. When at the beach or pool with my family, we are busy enjoying each other's company, enjoying the beauty of the day, finding seashells, splashing in the water, digging in the sand------- just having fun together. What others are wearing or how much they weigh is not even on our radar.
