HELP with my 10 y/o son's writing attitude
Imprimis replied to ccroft's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
It took me awhile to realize that my son's aversion to writing was actually because of issues with the mechanics of writing. As soon as I started allowing him to type his writing exercises, he had no problem with them. He has always struggled with handwriting, but I was amazed with the difference in his attitude towards writing assignments after making this change.- 22 replies

I don't feel our right to homeschool is in jeopardy, if for no other reasons than logistical ones. At current estimates, there are close to 2 million homeschoolers in the U.S., and the numbers are growing. I think, if there is a challenge to this right, it would soon become apparent that trying to incorporate 2 million or more students into an already stressed system would be chaotic. As homeschoolers, we are saving the government/taxpayers billions of dollars. Even with NEA rhetoric, and any UN agenda concerns, I just don't feel threatened in this area.

Ack...this migraine is making crazy
Imprimis replied to Rainbows's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Try alternating hot and cold compresses: Place a hot washcloth on your head/face for one minute, replace with a washcloth that has been in ice water. Repeat the process for about 10 minutes. This sometimes works for me, but usually only at the onset of a migraine. I hope you feel better soon. -
Keurig owners - do you like yours?
Imprimis replied to Frontier Mom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I like strong coffee, too, and one of the reasons I've passed up the Keurig, even with the deal Costco offers, is because I've read the coffee is weak. So, please share which of the coffees for the Keurig produce a good, strong cup. -
I suffer from frequent, debilitating migraines. I usually have to resort to my prescription meds, but, I have tried alternating hot and cold compresses with some success, especially at the onset of a migraine. I place a hot (as hot as I can stand) washcloth on my head for 1 minute, remove it, and replace it with a washcloth that has been in ice water---leave it on for 1 minute, then repeat the process for 10 minutes or so. This was actually recommended by my ob-gyn when I was pregnant with my first child. Caffeine, especially iced espresso, gives me some relief, too. I hope you feel better soon!

I have purchased all three editions of TWTM, and can honestly say it was money well-spent. TWTM has given me, imo, the best information, and the most inspiration , of any homeschool how-to book I have ever read.

I went a couple of times as a child. My children have never been to a circus . All three of them have an aversion to clowns....

Yes. Very. I find immense joy in being with my family every day. Yes, we squabble, we yell, we complain at times (I'm sure it's the Italian in us;)), but I am truly grateful and happy with my life.

Biggest Joys & Biggest Challenges in Homeschooling?
Imprimis replied to Joyfullyblessed's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Biggest joys: *Being with my children every day. Childhood is all-too-fleeting, and I am SO grateful to have this time with them *Learning along with my children---I am getting an infinitely better education than I did the first time around :001_smile: *Being able to let my children focus and spend extra time in subjects/areas that are of special interest to them *Instilling a love for learning in my children and helping them become life-long learners Biggest challenge: *Getting my teen out of bed in the morning. I'm serious.... -
Warriors (cat book series) to be read in order?
Imprimis replied to Alexandra's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My son, who loves this series, says the books really should be read in order. He has read all that have been written so far, and it seems as if a new one comes out every few months.... -
What do you like with your sausage?

I always incorporate vocabulary into our spelling lessons. In the early elementary years, it may be as simple as telling my kids what each word means or using the words in sentences to help them determine meanings. As the word lists become more difficult, however, I have my kids look up words in the dictionary if necessary. I feel it's essential they know the meanings of the words they are learning to spell.

If you were going to use a workbook for spelling, which one?
Imprimis replied to Tenaj's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We've used both Spelling Workout and A Beka with success. I probably prefer Spelling Workout. I think it does a great job of teaching important spelling rules, plus, as SWB and JW point out, Spelling Workout also introduces proofreading marks. -
Where did you attend college/university?

I attended UF for two years, and although I didn't graduate from UF, I'll always consider myself a Gator! -
Headache/migraine for 10 days now
Imprimis replied to Osmosis Mom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Glad to hear you are finally feeling better! I suffer from migraines, and, yes, I have had an episode that lasted 10 days. About six months ago, I was given a prescription for Relpax (which is a triptan), and it works wonderfully for about 24 hours. Typically, my migraines stick around for 3-5 days. -
Do you eat tilapia farm raised in China?
Imprimis replied to LNC's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We eat mostly wild Alaskan salmon or Norwegian salmon. My dh loves to fish, so we will occasionally eat yellowtail or red snapper that he catches. We have definitely cut back on our consumption of fish after reading all the concerns about mercury and other contaminants.
