  1. My dd will be testing for the first time.  The tests given at her co-op will be the Stanford tests.  I am just curious how she will do and think testing will be a good experience for her.  But, I realize that she has done very little science.  Any recommendations on something she could read/do to help her at least understand some of the science questions?  A basic overview book or a couple different basic books that she could read over?  Or even some science practice tests would be helpful but I can't find any.  I guess I dropped the ball in that area!  I will be understanding if she fails that section but also want her to prepare as much as she can.  She will be testing in April.

  2. Saxon is a good program but as with anything else some programs will fit well for a particular kid and some won't.  My kids did not do well with either Saxon OR MM.  CLE has been terrific.

My suggestion is to look at her results of her placement test in CLE and maybe get just the light units that pertain to any topics she is shaky on.  If it looks like she is solid on the bulk of the material covered in 700, then maybe just get 801, since it reviews what was covered in the previous level.  If she does well with that, she can just do 800.

If your child is that miserable, she isn't really learning.  It doesn't cost much money to try out one light unit.

ETA:  I do not agree with the Saxon approach of drill and kill until tears by doing every.single.problem.no.matter.what.  Some kids absolutely do not need that.  In fact, for some kids that destroys any interest in math and has the opposite effect.  Some kids end up sort of unlearning.  It just is too much for them.

I am struggling with putting her too far behind.  She did not know everything on the 700 test.  Needs review in many of the areas.  I found a scope and sequence but a table of contents would be more helpful for me...with samples..lol.  I guess I could splurge and buy the whole 700 and have her do what she needs to do.  I was hoping not to have to buy all the Light Units.  I hate to jump around with math but she is just not getting it done in a timely manner and I don't know how to change that.  I hate the set up of Saxon...she likes the review which she did not have in MM.  Anyways, I will talk to her and have her look at CLE.

  3. You are correct. Never skip any problems.

However, many people have found happiness in setting a time for their dc for 45 minutes, and letting them be finished for the day, wherever it is they stop. The pick up the next day at the same place. Many children found they were able to finish their lessons in that amount of time, even though it used to take longer. Who knows why? But it is so. Before jumping ship, I'd try that: 45 minutes a day, the end.

Good idea, but she would never finish before the next year.  Right now she is on Lesson 54 and there are 120 lessons, plus tests.  She doesn't do the investigations....:/ and has been skipping the fact practice.  I think she would get 1-2 lessons done a week.  I told her she would have to work all summer but I'm still not sure she would finish by 8th grade!

  4. My dd 12 (7th grade) is currently doing Saxon 8/7 after previous years of Math Mammoth.  We switched because she needed more of a spiral approach.  :(  Anyways, it takes between 1 hour and 2/12 hours for her to complete Saxon and constant tears.  Everything I read says to not skip any problems in Saxon.  I am not sure why it is taking her so long.  She understands her basic math concepts.

I was thinking maybe to lighten the load I would have her try CLE 700.  My other kids use CLE since we found that the spiral and lots of review it better for them (vs. MM where we lacked review in basic facts).  I really, really wanted MM to work since I love the whole idea of conceptual/mental math.  But, it is not working for us.

With all that said, do I keep pushing dd to do Saxon and try to speed things up?  Or do I have her switch to a more doable CLE 700 (or 800??).  I am having her try out the 700 test right now.  She knows a lot of it already.  So, I'd have to try to place her in the right light units.

I am hoping for Algebra I for 8th grade, whether that is Saxon I or something else.  Thanks for any input!  Math has been a real struggle in this house.

  5. Personally I like to let the kid choose, even if it's a wild rabbit trail. It's the last year before high school requirements kick in and everything has to be packaged on a tidy transcript that checks all the necessary boxes. Spend a year on geography, or just on the kings and queens of England, do a big unit study like Where the Brook and River Meet, or just whatever really interests the kid. :)

Eta: My rising 8th grader is a STEM geek. He's going to do Build Your Library's 8th grade year course based around the history of science. He looked at the samples, glanced at a few other options I suggested as possibilities, and chose BYL himself.

I like this idea.  I was thinking I'd have her look at different options and focus in on an area that may interest her.  I was looking at Sonligh 200 or HOD World Geography or MFW ECC.  Or, just piece together some things.  I think the World Cultures study would be good.  If anyone has any suggestions for that.  :)  She loves reading and good literature.  But, then I have 3 younger students to juggle alongside.

  6. Thinking ahead here--  We are currently doing year 4 in the history cycle.  My oldest is 7th grade.  It would be nice to start Ancient her 9th grade year.  But, really it doesn't matter right?  Since it is likely the other kids would not start Ancients in 9th grade?

So, should I continue on doing Year 1 for her in 8th grade?  Then continue the cycle that way, ending high school with Ancients?

Should I extend this year 4 and split half this year and half next year?  Or do world history or geography for her in 8th?

Any suggestions appreciated.  I don't know anything about history credits for high school and what that entails.  :)

  7. Any tips on teaching kids how to not eat so messy (getting food all over table, clothes, etc.) and to use proper habits at the table, have good posture, etc.?  One child in particular (my 10yo) seems to get nagged constantly and I feel bad about that.  I want to train my kids to be neat, sit up straight, form good habits, but I am sure that nagging doesn't help or even work.  I know some comes with time and maturity but for the 10yo especially I feel like I should expect more.  I hope I don't come across as uber-strict and expecting formal, proper manners at all times.  I just would like the kids to eat a meal and not be covered in the food like wild animals!  LOL.

Any tips?  The 10yo also is constantly slumped over in a very hunched and lazy posture.  I know that at a young age it is important to learn good posture and train your muscles in that way.  Just looking for help to STOP nagging.  Constantly nagging....don't eat that, sit up straight, wipe your mouth, etc., etc.  :(

    Thanks.

  8. Oh no, another math to look at!  I use CLE for my 4th grader.  Haven't thought about it for 7th.  Does it prepare for Algebra I for 8th?  That is my hopes.  What I like about Saxon is I can just stick with it through high school.  But do I want to?  I just really wanted MM to work for use and the retention that ALL of my kids have shown from using it makes me very unhappy.  I don't really like how Saxon explains things.  And when my dd gets a bunch wrong on the lesson, I don't really know how to remedy that.   I try to go over some of them.

  9. My daughter has done MM 1-5, some 6.  She then did Saxon 7/6.  I am trying to decide what to do for 7th grade pre-algebra.  We originally switched away from MM because she seemed to need more review/spiral since she would completely forget a topic we thought she had mastered.  She tested into Saxon 8/7 (or do I use Saxon 1/2???) and she passed the MM6 test.

I am having trouble deciding because I like MM a lot and would try to incorporate more review (how?) in MM7 somehow but Saxon 8/7 is said to offer a lot of review, which I think she may need??  Or do most use Saxon 1/2?

Anyone have experience with MM or Saxon for 7th grade?  Currently, she gets between 4-8 questions wrong on her Saxon lesson.  Just silly mistakes or misunderstanding that she will get once I go over it with her.

How do I decide what is best for her?  She is definitely NOT a fan of math but I want her to do well in it.  Sure, I'd love for her to use AOPS but she is just not mathy.

    Or other pre-algebra suggestions?

  10. Does anyone else feel like their 3rd grade plans will take all day?!? I don't feel like we have anything excessive planned but I do worry our day will be to long. It is challenging when you start with 30 minutes of piano and 30 minutes of Bible, 30 minutes of read aloud, add 2-3 hours of academics and that seems like a long day...

I may have asked already-- how will you combine MM and CLE?  I love aspects of both and can't decide.  Combining would be great but not sure how.

  11. Thank you for all the helpful suggestions.  I think part of the -taking an hour- is that he is easily distracted by siblings, or basically anything.  Not ADD, just distractible.  Anyways, I do have him redo the problems he gets wrong and he generally then gets them correct.  I want him to carefully do his work so after sitting for a long time doing his math he doesn't have to then go back and correct a lot of it because of sloppy mistakes.  He is slow in his math facts and we are working on that.  I will try some of the above suggestions and see if that works.

Also, Reflex Math is $35 per student?  It looks great but I would want to use it for 3 kids.  $$$ Any free things like it?

  12. My 9yo is doing CLE Math 4.  We go over the new concept together, after he does the speed drill, and then he does the review.  EVERY DAY he gets A LOT of problems wrong in the review, especially the addition, multiplication section, and all the word problems.  I go over the problems with him EVERY DAY and tell him to slow down, think about his math facts.  What is going on here?  Do I back up and just review math facts?  He understands adding and multiplying.  It usually is off by 1 number or so.  It has been so frustrating.  He spends an hour doing math and then when I correct it, he has to redo it all.  I don't know what is going on.  ??

  13. Math Mammoth is what I like personally.  I am not sure it is the best fit for all of my kids.  One seems to need more of a spiral approach because she forgets easily.  I have one doing Saxon (don't like it...) and another doing CLE (just ok).  The youngers do MM.  I wish I would have drilled more and worked more on math facts alongside MM.  Duh, right?  But, I prefer it be included like with CLE and Saxon.  Maybe I could ask Maria to do that?!!  Haha.  You never know.  I may put them all back in MM next year and make sure to add proper review.

  14. I used Fables with my 4th grader this year.  It was okay.  We struggled at the end where he was suppose to write a fable but couldn't do it.  I liked it overall but not sure it was the best fit alone.  I am currently using TC with my 2nd grader (section 1) and 4th grader (section 2).  I am enjoying the approach it takes, and there definitely is guidance in the teacher's manual.  I am going to continue on with it.  I like the approach that is taken.  My 2nd grader is working on copy work and grammar (nouns, proper/common).  My 4th grader is looking at paragraphs and figuring out the topic sentence and the important points that go with it to make up a proper paragraph, eventually outlining and writing his own paragraph.

  15. My 4th grader has been doing Fable this year.  We are at the part where he is to write his own fable.  This has proven to be extremely difficult for him.  There are a few helps--like what is the moral, who are your characters.  But then he is suppose to write the whole story out on his own.  He is not showing that he can do this.  I don't know how to help him.  Yikes.  Any suggestions?  Did you child struggle with this part at all?  I did recently buy Treasured Conversations so maybe stop a bit with Fable and move over to that for a bit?
