  1. You can break up CLE math easily. I do the teaching part of the lesson, and then later in the day assign DD the independent parts while I make dinner.
  2. I am working on pre-reqs for the local ADN program now, I am hoping to start next Fall (2010,) and my kids would be attending school as well. Afterwards, we will re-evaluate. :)
  3. I thought that was a guide to teach basic reading skills? She knows how to read, i.e. the basic phonics and how to decode words. I am just concerned with her fluency and comprehension.
  4. My DD is a little behind in reading, she just turned 7. She can read simple books like Cat in the Hat. We've been doing Explode the Code online and reading together every day. I'd like to help her with fluency. Are there books, resources, curriculum I could look into? I would prefer something secular but it's not a priority.
  5. My 7 year old daughter loves science. She watches Magic School Bus, How It's Made, etc. She loves to look through her different science encyclopedias. I am planning on using R.E.A.L Science Odyssey Life Sciences for her, but would it be too much to combine it with the Earth and Space also? Life Sciences on Tues, and Earth+Space on Thurs? Any suggestions?
  6. My oldest is 7 years old, and she can be very difficult at times. We've always practiced attachment parenting, and yes, sometimes I have no clue what to do with her because she is a handful and a half. But physical punishment just does not work for us.
  7. I think we're going to be using R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey, I was just making an Amazon wish list from the recommended books. It seems like they suggest a couple of things that could be used as a spine. For the human body units, it's Color Anatomy by Christine Becker. Then for the rest of the units, it looks like Usborne Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Natural World and Usborne Complete First Book of Nature. I just checked the sample, and you're right. It does sound like you read from the text itself and do notebooking, but it doesn't mean you cannot do narration. It looks fun and I am trying to take heart that learning history and science during this time should be fun.
  8. My grocery store sells King Arthur whole wheat flour and Gold Medal whole wheat flour right by white flour. Trader Joes sells white whole wheat flour which is a milder tasting whole wheat flour.
  9. What wonderful advice, I wish I had read and understood that with my first two. It was very much trial and error, poor kids. I've found toddlers don't really understand "pops" as a discipline method, they're having a great time and along comes mad Mama with a "pop," and now they are sad. What I did discover, though, is if I am overwhelmed and frustrated to the point of "popping," it's better for everyone involved if I take a Mama time-out, even if that means putting an unhappy kid in a Pack-n-Play for a few minutes while I take a breather. Good luck! The toddler years are so much fun but so challenging!
  10. What about seborrhic dermatitis? I have to use T-gel shampoo twice a week or so to keep the itching down.
  11. Thank you! I spent all afternoon agonizing over all the choices, and then came to the realization I just need to pick something solid and stick with it. It will probably be Singapore, and maybe some Kumon workbooks because she wants colorful "fun" stuff, too.
  12. What a timely thread! We took our autistic daughter out of first grade this past winter, and I've come to the conclusion that she needs to re-do first grade math and language arts because she didn't retain anything she should've learned in school. We've been very loosey-goosey the last 6 months of homeschooling between me trying to find my bearings as a homeschooler, finding her best learning style, and where she is at. It's hard not to feel like I am failing her. :( I would love a suggestion for a math program. She knows her numbers 1-100, addition facts to 5 (i.e. she can add with her fingers, after that...) shapes, etc. Basically kindergarten math skills. I'd like a spiral approach with some manipulatives. Thanks.
