Could it be a variant of a common razor clam (Atlantic jacknife clam)? they are more of a rectangular shape. Try looking at pictures of those, there are many different color and shape variants.

Eggplant spread - place a whole eggplant (holes poked with knife first so it doesn't explode) on a dry, hot, cast-iron skillet on a medium to high heat - cook on one side until charred, turn, cook on the other side until charred and "deflated" - it looks flat basically, no longer round - let cool, cut in half length-wise, open and scoop out the flesh - mash cooked eggplant with fork until fairly uniform and no longer stringy - add finely chopped onion and garlic to taste - optional - add finely chopped fresh tomato - season with salt, pepper, and a little olive oil (or oil of your choice) - mix everything, refrigerate until flavors mix - serve on hearty bread a-la bruscheta pan fried potatoes - peel potatoes of any kind in any quantity that would fit in your frying pan - cut potatoes in matchstick shapes (or rounds, whichever you prefer) - heat some cooking oil in a frying pan on medium or medium-high heat - place potatoes into frying pan, and cook without stirring until some crust forms on the bottom layer of potatoes - turn/stir to expose another side of potatoes to the bottom of the pan - if you have a cover for the frying pan, cover it now and let the potatoes finish cooking - continue to cook until potatoes are soft - season with salt and pepper - serve hot for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack 🙂

A friend of a friend was sick with mild covid symptoms back in April/May or so. She's had a positive antibody test since. The main symptom was loss of smell. Now she smells something burning pretty much all the time, even though nothing is burning. Apparently it's a thing and some of the people she knows have similar issues except that everything smells like rotting garbage. In comparison, burning smell is an improvement. 😞

Not in our experience. My daughter is taking Lukeion classes including Latin, and any free-form answers are marked "pending" by the computer. The teacher goes through those manually. Something like an extra space would be given full credit. The same goes for answers that have different capitalization, or include an article such as "the." She sometimes gets partial credit if the answer is very close, like a synonym.

What are you feeding him (or what are you eating if you are nursing)? In my kids it started at about 2 months of age. For my daughter who was nursed, I was able to change my diet, but it was very, very limited. I was down to boiled chicken, rice, a few vegetables, and yeast-free bread/crackers (i.e. matzoh like stuff - no leavening at all). For my son, this was not enough. He had to be formula fed - we tried just about all types of formula until we finally settled on the very expensive Similac Alimentum. If you end up here, you want the little pre-mixed cans, not the powder. A lot more money, but it actually does make a big difference. Our pediatrician wrote a prescription, and the insurance covered it 100%. It was a big fight with the insurance, which had to be re-fought every few months, but the cases of cans were shipped to our house from a durable goods medical company, like you would order oxygen home delivery. Thankfully, we were able to stop the $$ formula at one year old, but it was really the only thing that made any difference. It wasn't magic either, but it made life livable. Big hugs.

I teach college courses, so this post is from that perspective. My courses all require APA formatting - these are technology classes. As an undergraduate student, I had to use MLA in the freshman English composition classes only. All other classes required APA. In graduate school, all my classes required APA only. Many of my students who have learned and used MLA keep formatting their papers that way even when I give them resources, templates, and require them to make appointments with our writing coaches. They tend to ignore formatting comments and grade deductions and keep making the same formatting mistakes. Those who have had no formatting training tend to be more receptive to comments and usually at least attempt to use APA, even with some mistakes, which is fine. Mistakes is something we can work with. Refusal to cooperate is just that, refusal to cooperate and equals grade deduction. For my own kids and kids of friends I taught formal writing style, I begin with MLA. I have them write papers and use full, proper MLA format. When they become comfortable, I spend time explaining the elements - title, page numbers, references. There is a formula for doing these in MLA. Once they understand that it is a formula, I introduce APA. I then teach the same elements - title, page numbers, references, etc. but side by side with MLA so they can see how the two are similar and how they are different. Then I teach how to write APA papers, and gradually work up to the full "student" version (that's version 7 APA, the current one). After my students can work comfortably with MLA and APA, they can work on adding another style - breaking it down into the formula pieces, seeing how the new style is same and different from what they know, and then applying it. Then they can write a paper in MLA style and then convert it to APA, or Chicago, or something else as reinforcement.

The 2020 Physics Quest is open for registrations. This is a free kit for homeschoolers as well as schools. It usually takes them several months to assemble and mail out kits, so they may not arrive until perhaps next spring, but they are really nice. We've gotten them for the past four years and are looking to this year's installment! Some household items may be needed, but the kits usually have most needed items. I think I heard about it first here on the boards some years ago. They are usually geared to about middle school level, but younger/older students can also participate. Here is a link to previous years' activity guides. They are not normally available, but this year they are open to the public due to Covid and related school closures. Sometimes it is possible to buy previous year kits, too, as supplies last.

I find it helpful to explain it to people like this. Imagine you have a bucket with a little drain hole in the bottom. You keep pouring things into the bucket, sometimes little things, sometimes big things, sometimes medium. Sometimes it goes in slow and drains out without ever becoming full. But some days the bucket is so close to the top that even a tiny little thing will make it turn over and spill everything, making a huge mess. I can take quite a bit of noise on a regular basis, but I need time to let my bucket drain out - time of utter quiet, peace, and without people in my peripheral vision moving around or talking to me. If I don't get that time, then watch out - even a small thing like playing a song on YouTube that I normally enjoy could send me into a crying fit. If my bucket is very close to being full, it doesn't matter how little or large the amount of sound or interaction is - it will overflow, giving me an overwhelming sensory overload with potential consequences for those in the earshot. I've learned to tell people in my life very explicitly - I am very close to/at sensory overload. I need to have time without any people contact. This has worked quite well overall, but of course no system is perfect.

I used the Astronomy The Self Teaching Guide for astronomy - in 7th grade. There is no way in my opinion that it can be used alone to fulfill a high school science requirement. My 7th grader (at the time) finished the book in less than 6 months. The way I scheduled it was very simple. I looked at the page count with content, not including titles, etc., and divided so that my student read about 20-30 pages per day. I don't remember the exact number of pages, but it was something like that. That work was not time consuming for my student even though we did outlining and note-taking/summarizing. I would agree with @Garga above. In order to make that material worthy of a high school credit, I would do quite a bit more work especially if the course is going to count as one of lab courses toward graduation.

If you are looking for a kind of printer you have at work, you may wish to look into workgroup printers. These are going to cost more money, but they may have the functionality you want. I have something like this, but Dell brand, which they no longer sell. This one prints up to 30 pages per minute in color and black and white, has automatic duplex, and also comes with a scanner, copier, and fax (I don't use fax). When you look at printers, look at their max monthly capacity. This particular model can handle up to 50,000 pages per month. If you need to print more than that, you will have to go up in class and price. It also has a USB port, which my printer has also. I actually use that a lot. My high schooler has to do homework on paper and submit it scanned to be graded. We use the scanner for this, scanned directly to a USB drive, then transferred to a laptop and submitted digitally. My printer scans as PDF documents. I hope this helps.

Would they be open to Teen Challenge? This is a heavily faith-based program, but they are very good at what they do. Cost I think may be on a sliding scale, but calling them would be a good idea. I think the person needs to go in voluntarily, and stay for at least a year.

I used to disinfect just about everything that came through the door, wash produce before storing,quarantine packages, etc. I did not venture out to a shop for many weeks, staying up till 2 AM when delivery slots became available to reserve one. I still get delivery for most things and only go into shops for small things like fresh bread, but I no longer disinfect packages or groceries. I wear a mask outdoors when it's not possible to be pretty far away from others, but I don't typically wear one when I go for a walk in the neighborhood. I walk early, and I see maybe one or two people, and someone crosses the street to distance. In that sense, my immediate area is still reasonably good, but I am starting to see more masks below the nose, which is concerning. Our area was fairly stable for a few weeks, so we went to the beach 3 times - arrived there before 7 am and left around 9 am. There were very few people around. We did use the bathrooms because it was nearly empty, but we have a little camping portapotty that we carry with us. I put clumping cat litter (don't get light weight, that doesn't work very well!) in a double-lined garbage bag, and the setup works well in emergencies. We have a truck with rear seats that can be folded up, tinted rear windows, and it is doable for an adult to use the portapotty in the passenger area with reasonable privacy. We also carry a big water jug and soap. Now the cases are starting to go up again, and I am becoming more diligent. We have outdoor dining here, and setup varies widely. Some places faithfully put large distances between tables, but many have nearly no distancing. As we drove past some restaurants recently, my husband said that it's basically the same as eating inside, chairs back to back, very crowded. We got some takeout, but we will not be going to a restaurant that offers outside dining, even for takeout. I don't see enough compliance for my own personal comfort. Also, we haven't been back to the beach. Even though the area is capped at 50% and cars are being sent away after that (single entrance/exit with parking beyond), I am not comfortable right now. Maybe later in the season, very early in the morning when it's too cold for most sunbathers. We'll see.

My favorite is the Vicks Pediatric SpeedRead thermometer. It's digital, and our whole family uses it. I think retail is around $15, but as all thermometers they have been difficult to find. I actually had to replace it recently and found it in stock at a local WalMart for order pickup at around $8.

That really depends on what your son will need to do on it. Some applications need a fast processor, or a lot of memory, or a large hard drive to store all the files. I know that many students in high school and college use ChromeBooks, but again it really depends on what is needed. For my teen we bought this HP laptop, but I don't recommend it. It has a very weak (slow) wireless card, and we had to buy an an external wireless card that plugs into it to make wireless work. This laptop is fine for things like writing papers and doing class on Zoom, but now my daughter wants to learn 3D video game graphics design, and the laptop will not be able to run it with any success. It's just too slow for that. We may have to buy her a desktop computer that is more like a higher end gamer one, not for gaming, but for learning how to make video games.

No, no, no, stay away from Windows S mode! Windows S computers are typically cheap, but the hardware is usually not very good. But, even more importantly, Windows S is locked so that you can only install apps that are available through the Windows App Store. What this means is that if your son needs to use some non-Microsoft application for programming or anything else, he will not be able to download or install it. So, no Adobe Photoshop or the excellent free app Inkscape for graphics, no RStudio for R programming, no Python, no free word processing LibreOffice, etc., etc. Oh, and no Zoom either unless Zoom is available from the Windows App Store. If he will need to use anything that has to be installed on the computer itself that does not come from the Microsoft Windows app store, he will not be able to do it.

Oh, so much this. We live in a very diverse municipality, both income-wise and race, culture, country of origin, etc. My immediate neighborhood sees police probably at least weekly, sometimes more often than that. But here's the thing - I know my neighbors and I know that the neighbor (white) whom police visit the most calls them himself. Sometimes there is a full contingent of a fire engine, several police vehicles, and one or two ambulances - all for him. He has some very serious issues, which I won't go into here for privacy reasons, and sometimes he calls police to have them come and talk him down, which they do. I think everyone from dispatchers to EMS to every police officer knows him, as this has been going on for at least as long as we've been living here, which is now nearly 20 years. If someone just moved into the neighborhood and started seeing this, what would they think? What if he wasn't white? There is another family in my neighborhood, a family of color. They have police visit them every few weeks. Again, that's because the family calls for help, not because anyone reports them for anything. Now I know this also - there is an ongoing domestic dispute with an estranged family member who won't leave them alone. This person becomes very easily agitated, and police come and talk him down before he (usually) goes with them in an ambulance. If someone was out there watching, I'm pretty sure the situation could easily become escalated because this person is clearly quite disturbed.
