  1. My rising 2nd grader can read some, but I would say she is half way through 1st grade with her reading. Even so, her fluency is horribly slooooooooow. I think I am going to SCREAM!!!!!!!!!!!! She will read maybe one paragraph if I tell her its reading time and then just run away and say she doesn't want to do anymore. We used Hooked on Phonics for the 2nd half of K and 1st half of 1st, then switched to Time4learning.com. She knows her phonics, but it just seems as though it takes her a very long time to look at a word and read through it. We are still sounding out EVERYTHING except for those few words she has memorized. Even if he sees a word the sentence prior in a book, she will sound it out again the 2nd time she sees it just below what she JUST READ! What can I use to help her with fluency? What have you used that has really worked?? I would LOVE some suggestions!
  2. I have a rising 2nd grader and was going to use SOTW The Ancients. I also have a CHILD starting K this Fall who will be following along with us. I am wondering if I should go ahead and use Vol 1 and study the Ancients with the 2 of them since we haven't done it yet. I know the TWTM suggests using it for 2nd grade which is why I am wondering. I would also like to add to it since it is secular. What is the best biblical curriculum that you have used that follows SOTW? Looking for all opinions! I have been thinking of using Biblioplan and just using it as a guide, but don't want to overdo it. I have heard it is A LOT of reading.
  3. My DD16 used TT Algebra 1 this past year. She apparently just hasn't gotten it at ALL! We are no going back through the book from the beginning over the summer and trying to retain everything we learned with the help of a tutor every Friday for one hour. I have thought about putting her in a classical tutorial program we have here for Math, but I am not sure this would do the trick since she would have a textbook w/o CD if and when she got stuck on a problem. She would only have someone to guide her 2 days per week 1 hour a day. I really think she needs more then that. I think we are going to move onto Algebra 2 in stead of Geometry while its still fresh in her mind. I know we cant go back to TT because it just DID NOT work for us. Anyone have any suggestions for a math program for a child that just isn't getting it at all? All opinions completely welcome! :D
  4. Should I do Vol 2 with them instead of Vol 1 and then start the rotation in 4th and 2nd even though they have never done Vol 1?
  5. I am having a very hard time trying to decide what curriculum I want to use this coming Fall! I am ready to pull my hair out! I have a 6 year old daughter who is very "wiggly", wants to tell ME what she is going to do all the time as far as her schoolwork and is extremely frustrating to teach! I know that sounds horrible! :001_unsure: I was at the public school ready to put her back in a few months ago and then put my head back on straight and knew that was a very wrong decision. I have actually given her her own freedom since then (about three months ago) and just used "child-led learning". She has actually 3X a week (or there about) on her own decided she wants to read, do math, draw, etc. which is WONDERFUL! I picked up a copy of Well Trained Mind a few weeks ago and have been reading it and am entirely intrigued. I also picked up FLL and have been doing a couple of the lessons with her. A child that wanted nothing to do with learning before has memorized the definition of a noun in a matter of minutes, and the poem, "The Caterpillar" in a matter of one day. I am so excited! I pulled out SOTW today and read her the first paragraph of a chapter about Nomads. She went on to tell her sister everything I just read to her which is so unlike her! She was actually interested! :D I have been perusing the boards here and have taken in so much info from you women! This board is amazing! You all have so much inforation and are so inspirational! I am excited to homeschool again come the Fall! I was so burnt out before coming here and reading! Ok, so now come the questions. I also have a 5 year old son whom will be starting K. I have struggled with my 6 year old daughter for a year so my 5 year old son sorta got the raw end of the deal so to speak. He did learn some listening to us do MUS (probably more then my 6 year old as he memorizes EVERYTHING). I never worked with him all year and he is able to read the first few BOB books, recite his skip counting facts, knows all his addition doubles, could tell you anything you wanted to know about electricity because he is very intrigued by it and actually studies it, asks lots of questions, etc. I really want something I can do with the BOTH of them together. I was thinking this: History - SOTW 1 w/ AG along with Biblioplan (I have read this is really to start with a 1st grader so am wondering if this is okay or I should use something else or just wait until 4th) Math - MUS (primer or alpha for K and beta for 2nd) LA - FLL Handwriting - HWT (cursive for 2nd grader and my printing book for K ) Phonics - I AM TOTALLY STUCK HERE! I used HOP with my daughter and her fluency is not where it should be, she hates to read, etc. I don't want this to happen with my son, although, I know he is a completely different child with a completely different personality and I may be okay. I really need something for my daughter to help her with her fluency. My son I think will pick up anything. Any suggestions for phonics would be very welcome! :001_smile: Writing - Was going to try WWE or Writing Strands for my 2nd grader. I am still not sure either about this because I don't have experience with either. My teen daughter has always taken writing classes outside of home. Science - Discovering God's World (a science program we have in the area where they do experiments every other week). Art - both my son and daughter take an art class outside of home. Fine Arts - My daughter has taken dance for 4 years and will continue this Fall, but still working on this one for my son. I am praying that all the changes will work for my daughter. I need my sanity back! I would love any suggestions as far as curriculum even if it means changing my plans! We have a Classical Conversations program in our area, but, unfortunately, it is out of our budget (sadly). Thanks! Pamela
  6. What about the switching you have to do with SOTW to follow the Biblioplan curriculum plan? I had read one post where a mom had said she didn't like that idea. I would love to hear from others. I love the idea of SOTW compared to MOH, but dont want my children to lose the biblical part of history together with it. My 6 year old daughter is absolutely intriqued by bible stories....:001_smile: Pamela
  7. Can someone please explain the differences between this and MUS. We used MUS last year and it didn't work very well for us, but everything else we tried (Saxon, Singapore) was even worse. I am thinking maybe it was just a maturity issue and I have a wiggler! I was going to try MUS again this year, but and wondering about Rightstart Math since I have seen so many posts talking bout how amazing it is. Also, what are the pricing differences?
  8. I had read a lot on this forum about using Biblioplan with SOTW. I have looked at the samples for Biblioplan on their site and it looks great! Those of you that use both together, do you also have the SOTW1 AG?
  9. If you click on her name, you will get a drop down menu. I clicked to see her profile and there was an album off to the right side. Click on it. :001_smile: Pamela
  10. I love your schoolroom! Love the top and legs you picked at IKEA and how you coordinated the black/white. I had so much trouble picking out what I wanted. We went with black table tops because I have little ones and didn't want the children coloring the white ones! I do have the same chairs. I cant believe how comfortable they are!
  11. Where did you get the organization pockets for your word wall? I would love to have one of those!
  12. Do you have the ISBN for Algebra II? I would love to get everything for $75 so that my daughter can use this with a tutor all year long instead of sending her to a tutorial class!
  13. Does anyone have a room set aside in their home for an actual homeschool/classroom? I am in the process of putting one together in our loft and was looking to see if some would share pictures, etc. of theirs. Most everything Ive purchased so far (i.e., storage, shelves, tables, desk, etc) is all Ikea. I love this store! I am looking to get ideas! Pamela
  14. Does anyone have any ideas for a timeline for SOTW, Vol 1? I haven't been able to find much online. Also, I have the older version of the book and need to purchase the activity guide. I read on Amazon on some of the reviews that if you are going to purchase the revised Activity Guide, then you should purchase the correct book that goes with it so you aren't "lost". Anyone have any experience with this? I didn't want to have to purchase the book over again since I just bought it last year and never got around to using it. Also, I want to start Vol 1 with my 2nd grader. I am wondering if I should just wait until 4th grade since I didn't start it in 1st. I do really want her to study some history because I think SOTW would be fun/interesting for her. She is my "wiggly" child and I am trying to involve some thing that have activities/crafts. I also have a kindergartner who will just sit and listen/follow along/play, etc.
