  1. OPGTR - You can do 3 lessons/day or 1 lesson/3 days. I do 15 min/day w/my Kinder and sometimes that means a whole lesson while other times we work on the lesson/words one day and do the practice reading another day. It is scripted, flexible, and THOROUGH! I LOVE it!
  2. It's always tough saying what *I* do b/c it works for us b/c I've been doing these things since birth - it's hard to 'fix' things after he has gotten into the routine of only taking 45 min naps...that being said, everyone has sleep cycles. My son will sleep 30-45 min, wakes up, play in his crib, and will go back to sleep another 30-45 min...this will happen 2-3x/nap. If your son will play in his crib (not w/toys, just moving around, kicking, talking, sucking his thumb or whatever) happily, maybe he will go back to sleep? Just a thought... Can't help you w/night - I have a feeling he is waking up out of habit, not need - he is too old to *need* food in the middle of the night but too young to understand why you will not pick him up again in the middle of the night (if that is what you choose to do) so it's a tough spot...you may want to try to let him be (if your hubby is okay w/it) and see what happens (if he cries, time him so you can make sure he doesn't cry too long but make sure you give him a chance to calm down and go back to sleep)...?
  3. 1.5 hrs, 4-5 days/week (depending on what we have going on/if we are going anywhere) 45 min math Grammar & narration-2x/week, writing 3x/week, spelling-daily - 30 min total 15 min science 15 min history Oh, and she reads aloud to me daily for 15-30 min (she has finished OPG and reads well) so I guess that would be 2 hrs daily.
  4. I think that's a good rule :) As long as you are eating healthy food, seconds aren't a bad thing, imo. We have our meal (meat, veggies, maybe some bread/pasta) and then fruit is our dessert (if they finish everything on their plates).
  5. If you are Christians: my girls are learning lots of verses like Prov 3:7 'Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil.' Phil 2:14 'Do all things without complaining or arguing.' Prov 10:19 'When words are many, sin is not absent but he who holds his tongue is wise.' It is GREAT to ask questions but to assume you are right all the time is NOT good (I know, it's natural, but still not good). I know I struggle with pride (I used to argue ALL the time w/my teachers and parents - BRAT!!!) so I am trying to use God's Word to help my children not struggle as much - I wish I was taught what God's Word says when I was little...
  6. I only make it until 3pm (barely) before I give out!
  7. Practice makes perfect! :) Special school toys ONLY for school, a 30 min video, having roomtime (time to play alone w/special toys - lasts 1 hr for my 3yo) - that takes up about 2 hrs for my JUST turned 3yo...the more we do it, the more she gets used to it/learns what is expected of her - I would guess it is the same for your little one (along w/some maturity, of course)...
  8. 1st grade & Kinder & non-schooler :) We don't school all at once but here is what we do: History (I read during breakfast 3x/week) 8-8:45 Math w/1st grader while youngers are having room/playpen time We play until 'non-schooler' takes a nap 10-10:20ish - Bible 10:20ish-11:00 - 1st grader does independent work (math, spelling, writing); Kinder does math, writing, phonics, & reading (bob books) with me 11:00-11:15 - Kinder plays independently; 1st grader does grammar (2x/week), narration (2x/week) 11:15-11:30 - Science (reading books, coloring, activities, etc.) We are done until younger 2 go down for naps in the afternoon at 2:30, when 1st grader reads aloud to me (more difficult books) for 15-30 min...
  9. I was gonna say those 2 things - my milk supply goes down in the afternoon b/c of running around so much, not resting enough, etc...take a look at your days lately - do you need to have an afternoon rest time (for the kids and esp. YOU)? Maybe that would help your supply at night?
  10. This is how it is in Ecuador as well. My mil (a gringa) was and is sooo unsure of herself, it seemed to work for her. However, I (raised to be VERY independent) want to scream, "Cut the cord!" for most of the things she says/does to her children. At some point (imo) children need to really become adults (when they get married) - raise their own children, make their own mistakes, etc. However, over there, that never really happens. Even when parents are about to die, they STILL are the boss...
  11. 1st Grade Schedule: Math: Saxon 1 & MEP 1 Reading: trying to find challenging, appropriate books (right now: Laura Ingalls Wilder) Spelling: SWO B Grammar: FLL 1 Narration: from whatever she is reading (she does well with that) and from read-alouds (when I read to her, she struggles more w/narration) History: CHOW (I read aloud at breakfast table) Writing: 3x/week: from FLL and whatever scripture she is memorizing; Writes in Math & spelling daily Not sure if this makes me slack (probably) but what we are focusing on right now is spacing - I should probably add more writing soon...
  12. What my 4yo does probably would not be enough for yours as she seems to be asking for more and more school but you can look in my siggy to see...I know, I'm not much help...just getting new books from the library can occupy my 4yo all day!
  13. me too and my kids love My Friend Rabbit (Qubo) but I don't like it when my 4yo says, "Oh, cabbage!" - all it is is a replacement curse, using cabbage b/c he is a rabbit :glare:
  14. no, when it's time to go to bed, we go to bed. We read ALL day practically - it's not a bedtime thing at our house.
  15. What type of wheat? I mill mine and use hard red (for bread) & soft white (for muffins, etc.). My bread recipe (I use a bread machine but this obviously can be done w/o): 1 1/2 c. HOT tap water 2 tsp salt 1/3 c. EVOO 1/4-1/3 c. honey (I use tupelo) 4 c. + 6 Tbsp flour 2 tsp lechithin/1 Tbsp rice bran extract 2 tsp gluten 1 Tbsp ground flaxseed (op) 1 Tbsp yeast My bread is pretty light and fluffy (not as fluffy as white bread, but tastes really good and we obviously eat it b/c of the health reasons). hth!
  16. I just figured this out recently (w/in the past 3 or so months) - WOW, what a difference this makes! I have a clean house for the first time since we've been married - it's WONDERFUL! :)
  17. I feel like I am spoiled, being in the early years and will be more stressed as they get older (more school work, less naps, later bedtimes, etc.)...mine are 4 & under so they still have 2-2.5hr naps in the afternoon - LOVE those! Everyone goes to sleep at 8ish at night so I have from then on to chill. Everyone sleeps until 7 in the morning (or at least stays in their beds) and I only get up earlier if I feel compelled to take a shower :) I USED to get 45min-1hr every morning after breakfast while they had room time but now I do math w/oldest dd so she can concentrate better...
  18. MOH? I am just reading CHOW this year (was planning on starting SOTW next year) and I am about to throw the stupid thing away! I skipped the 1st part and have only read parts of it - I am reading most of our history out of the Bible (CHOW just skims over Biblical things - that is, if it doesn't try to discount it all together)...
  19. I make our bread products (which makes it really healthy and REALLY cheap) so we do sandwiches for lunch - I guess I'm no help there. For breakfast, we do grain, fruit, and protein - keeps them satisfied for WAAY longer than cereal and WAAY cheaper: oatmeal & applesauce & eggs, boiled egg w/fruit & muffin (we make them ahead, freeze, pop in microwave 25 sec - tastes just like out of the oven), yogurt w/granola & fruit (made ahead & frozen to keep fresh), pancakes & eggs, etc...I know NOTHING about cooking other grains like you suggested but would LOVE to learn!
