  1. Trulia and Zillow allegedly often have misleading property value information. I would pay for a comps report from a licensed appraiser. We did this about 15 years ago when we were appealing our updated assessment for property taxes. It cost us a mere $25 for the comps, and the comps persuaded county assessor to lower value of our home for tax rolls.
  2. Could you send us the real estate webpage link to pictures of house so we can drool over it? Real estate transfers are a source of endless frustration. When we were selling our previous home, the first person who looked put a contract on it. A day before closing, his financing fell through. Over the next few months, there were 3 more scheduled closings for different buyer that were postponed.
  3. Somewhere that health care is affordable. Maybe Belize or Costa Rica.
  4. I understand the creepy annoyed response that the original poster describes. However, this is an internet forum where anyone with an interest in classical education may join. Although I am past childbearing age, I occasionally read a homebirth and midwifery forum since I maintain a vital interest in the topic. There are no secret hiding places that cannot be unearthed by those savvy enough or nosy enough. There are a few people here from my home city who have posted enough information for me to put two and two together to determine their identity. Of course, I would never bring up a post in conversation, but I no longer have contact with homeschool community anyway with the exception of a few long term friends. Others posters not from my area could possibly be identified if I had the curiousity and inclination to do so. Many times I have considered relaying a personal experience that I thought may be relevant to a member's post but stopped short of posting because my children may have deemed potential post an invasion of their privacy.
  5. A couple years ago, I stopped taking expressway to work because of the frequency of accidents and resulting traffic jams, especially at intersection of two major expressways. Ordinary interstate driving does not bother me. In fact, I prefer it over city streets because it is usually faster, safer, and more direct. Could you overcome your aversion by desensitizing yourself by driving a little at a time when expressway is not particularly busy?
  6. Why are a teen's concerns so easily dismissed even with such an ungracious delivery? As for the homeschooling and sports conerns, let it roll off your back and try to consider that she did not intend to undermine your work with your children. At a later time when both of you have cooled off, explain that you are doing what you feel is best for your children, and she will need to accept that because it will no longer be open for discussion. What stands out to me is that both the sister and the original poster feel the father is too "hard" on the son.
  7. I agree with original poster in that I have never heard modesty discussed as frequently as here. In fact, I am unable to specifically recall any conversations in real life about modesty. Our general viewpoint is that we dress in a way that is comfortable for us, and we do not voice our opinion on way others dress even if it is against rules or law. Most of my family dresses in ordinary clothing and blends into the crowd, so I guess we are not particularly modest one way or the other. One teen daughter is interested in fashion, so she tends to show a little more skin than the others. Additionally, she has worked as nude model at an art college. Not sure whether sleepwear factors into modesty equation, but I sleep in the buff for comfort. Partner and I use jacuzzi in buff; I suspect that a couple of the kids do too. We have an unwritten rule that if hot tub is being used, no one goes out to the area. When kids were younger, at least some of them and myself would skinny dip in privacy-fenced backyard pool. It was about the comfort and convenience of not having to mess with swimsuit in privacy of home, not about immodesty.
  8. What a tight toned bod, Rebel. You look terrific. Wish I could look pleasing in that outfit.
  9. More choices are a positive change. Yes, people can make educated choices before and after menu changes. Not sure I understand what everyone's beef is. No one is forced to eat at McDonald's, and the old menu items continue to be available.
  10. :iagree::iagree::iagree::iagree: I just hated it that my Muslim neighbors felt like they had to apologize for being Muslim after the terrorist attacks. Both the Bible and the Koran are well stocked with verses that seemingly advocate violence and subjugation of women and whole other tribes of people when read literally. Although I believe that some messed up people will wreak destruction regardless, in their twisted minds, their holy books support for their actions.
  11. It doesn't make sense, does it? At our community rec center pool, members can use the swim team section when it is not in use by swim team.
  12. Her death reminds me of Elvis Costello's quote about Gram Parsons's untimely death, "He made the perfect exit."
  13. Personally I would be more concerned if tasteful beautiful nde sculptures did not at least occasionally inspire sexual thoughts.
  14. Our firm is handling the estate of an public figure's widow. A few years ago, the widow had purchased a home in an upscale [for here] neighborhood of a suburb for $682,000. At the time, she got a very reasonable deal and paid significantly less per square foot than other homes had recently sold for in the neighborhood. She died July 2010. The house was listed for sale in August 2010. In July 2011, the well-maintained house sold for $475,000.
  15. I too found it much easier to be content and get positive results once I decided decades ago to communicate very literally with my partner about what my expectations were.
  16. Having adequate financial, emotional, and mental resources to see another infant through to adulthood is ultimately the responsibility of those who bring child into world, not the responsibility of a deity. I hope you and your husband reach a consensus on the decision that is right for both of you and any future (and present) children.
  17. I suppose the same could be said of any bombing shooting adherent of any religion that features a deity.
  18. No, we never raised funds for our children's educations, regardless of whether they were homeschooled, private-schooled, or public-schooled. If the private or public schools had a fundraiser, we made a contribution ourselves instead of asking others to buy overpriced junk.
