  1. My dc did go from homeschool to private school for a brief time. I, too, was burned out and feeling overwhelmed. It was supposed to be one of the best Christian schools in our area. Turned out to be a horrible experience for my son....he was bullied by two boys in his class (punched, kicked, choked) on at least 12 separate occasions over the first two months of school--and this happened in the classroom. Despite our best attempts to work with the school, nothing was done. Ds was having panic attacks, and unable to sleep. We brought them both back home, ds spent 6 months in counseling, and we tried to save what we had left of that year. I would also love to see a part-time option, but none of the schools in our area offer that. It is worth contacting the schools you would be interested in, though, and see if it is an option....doesn't hurt to ask. :-)
  2. Thank you.....I haven't been able to see many samples of MiF, but it doesn't sound like a good fit for him....especially starting at 6th grade.
  3. How about a YMCA or swim lessons (where we are, new classes start every 4 weeks) for something for now?
  4. The amount of review in Saxon is why I've hesitated with it in the past. But, he does need some regular review for better retention. Since you're using MiF, how difficult do you think it would be for him to start MiF in 6th grade coming from a more traditional program like Horizons?
  5. Maybe check with your local parks dept and/or library? They should have summer activities coming up. Our local library has a weekly 'after school' club that meets each week and is well attended by both homeschool and public school kids. Vacation Bible Schools also should be happening in June/July at local churches. Our city park also has a lot of activities/concerts, etc. over the summer.....Any local homeschool meetup groups in your area? Those are probably having park days as the weather improves.....
  6. Thanks.....I'm leaning towards Saxon. I've looked at Math U See samples many times, but he's just not a 'hands on' kid, and I think it would also be difficult to switch to that in 6th grade. The school uses the Saxon Homeschool Kit. I know there's nothing flashy about Saxon, but it's probably the most 'similar' to what he's been using--more traditional approach to math. I also like that we can use Saxon Teacher (although I will probably substitute with Art Reed's DVD) to teach the lesson.' Any other suggestions/advice welcome! :-)
  7. Dc (4th and 6th grade) are most likely going to be enrolled in one of our state's public charter/virtual schools next year. We do get some choices in curricula. Math is where I'm having difficulty choosing. I'm not too concerned with dd (4th grade), she's a very easy student, and I think she'll do fine in any of the choices. However, ds (6th grade) hates, absolutely hates, math. He has primarily done Horizons over K-5, with a few short stints with Math Mammoth and BJU Math. He 'liked' BJU the most, but it didn't have enough review, and he wasn't retaining what he'd previously learned. He is at grade level in math, but believes he is bad at math and doesn't understand it. He is very advanced in reading/language arts. I think that because he's strong in those areas, and math doesn't come as easily to him, is why he has such an aversion to math. So, the choices for 6th grade math for him are: Math in Focus, Saxon w/ Saxon Teacher, Math U See, or an online program through FLVS. What would you choose in this situation? We're not stuck with our choice, if it really isn't working. But, I'd like him to feel more successful in math and not switch him around anymore.
  8. Thanks for your responses! I'm teaching Five in a Row this year to K-2 graders, and it's been a fun class. In looking online last night, I found the Letter of the Week preschool curriculum at Confessions of a Homeschooler website. It's exactly what I was looking for, and perfect as we have 26 weeks. :)
  9. If you were teaching a weekly co-op preschool class (1 hr. long) for 3-5 year olds, what would you use for a curriculum? It will most likely be about 6-8 kids.
  10. I've been using a semi-permanent color to blend my grays about every 4 weeks for almost 20 years. It hasn't seemed to damage my hair at all.
  11. My dh is a health inspector....he's trained me well over the last 20 years. :-)
  12. "There are more, but the only other one that comes to mind, isn't a movie, but a Christmas cartoon, called Nester the Long-eared Donkey. When themother freezes to death in the snow to keep Nester warm, I just lose it. It got so bad that my mom quit letting me watch it when I was little. We bought it on DVD a few years ago, and I *still* cry." Totally agree with this....Nester is the saddest show I have ever seen. I bought it last year, and dd and I watched it....both sobbing. Afterwards, she said, 'Mom, that was the worst thing I've ever seen. I can never watch that again.'
  13. Legos, dirty socks, rainbow loom bands, little scraps of paper......
  14. :iagree: Lutheran here, and this would be horrifying in our church, too.....
  15. Mine have all been for 1st-3rd graders: Five in a Row Magic School Bus Science---watched episode on DVD then did corresponding experiment from Scholastic.com. Math games---super easy, no planning required....just showed up with a variety of educational math games each week.
  16. Not certain about diving, but ds(11) was on swim team last year when he had his tonsils/adenoid surgery. He was out of swimming for a month. Even after returning, it took awhile to build his endurance back up. He lost 12 pounds during recovery due to pretty much living on popcicles for 3 weeks.

Agree it is gross, but this could happen at any restaurant.....it's not exclusive to the one with the clown, or even fast food. In our state, restaurant employees are required to wash their hands in the restroom after using it. They also must wash again in the kitchen hand sink. It should be reported to the manager and the local health dept. Improper/lack of hand washing is one of the most common causes of food borne illness in restaurants.
  18. I have a pair of shoes I only wear in the house. I also have Superfeet inserts in my slippers. :)
  19. Agree that it depends on the situation.....some omissions are meant to deceive, sometimes it's to spare someone's feelings, and some things just aren't anyone's business. :-)
  20. My dr. recommends 40....then every 2 years, and annually after 50.
  21. Yes, I have them during PMS and the first few days of my period. I have a prescription for 10 Xanax/month that I only take at night during that time. Been doing this for about 5 years, and haven't had a night time panic attack since.
  22. I used to work for one of the larger Blue Shield plans, and no, the insurance plan offers a variety of benefits that corporations can choose from. So, basically, the corporations choose and pay for the benefits they want to provide their employees. Whenever we had customers call to complain that some benefit wasn't covered under their plan, we'd refer them back to their employers. The insurance company offers and administers the benefits, but the employer chooses them. There are also 'pre-packaged' plans offered to individuals and small businesses that don't have a lot of customization. ETA: This would be different if Hobby Lobby is providing their employee benefits through the new 'exchanges'. However, with a corporation the size of Hobby Lobby, I would assume they would most likely be a 'self-insured' plan contracting with one or a few different insurance administrators for their benefits (Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Aetna, etc.).
