  1. I don't know either. We are all sick and I'm kind of just staying home. I needed to run to the store, so I went at 7 am when there wouldn't be any ppl in the store. But like, how do I really know? One of my kid spikes a fever every time he gets sick. I never spike a fever, no matter what I have. So I'm just waiting it out and keeping to ourselves.
  2. So, we are all getting sick here at my house. Of course, it mimics the symptoms perfectly. I can say with almost 100% certainty it is NOT Covid-19. But my question is, would you quarantine like it is? On the off chance that it could be?
  3. East coast here. Lots of chatter about the virus, but many in a light tone and not wanting to seem paranoid. I've seen some drug stores low on stock, but nothing sold out and stores don't seem to be any busier.
  4. History: Build Your Library 3 Math: Math Mammoth 4 English and Grammar: First Language Lessons 3, BYL, and Brave Writer. Science: BYL 3/Chemistry Extras: Gymnastics, snowboarding class, and piano
  5. I've got the basic plan for 8th grade: Math: AOPS Science: Astronomy first semester, Physics 2nd semester (I don't know the resources I'll be using yet.) History: BYL 8, which is the history of science. She will also have a unit on World War II, unless we do it this summer, a unit on our state history, and probably one on American history as a refresher. English: She wants to take the AP English exam, but I don't know if she will be ready. I'm letting her plan the year around taking it though. So we will do a heavy grammar course, and she will read AP level english books. Still have a bit of planning to do here. She will also do creative writing, unassigned. Enrichment/extracurricular: Continue volunteering at the animal shelter, gymnastics, hopefully continue with violin (fingers crossed), and intern at a veterinary clinic. Still need to think about something more light and fun. Philosophy? Comedy books? Drama? I don't know.
  6. I know it varies by area, but I'm curious-- What would you pay to have someone come in and clean bathrooms, possibly mop the kitchen floor as well. Once a week, every week.
  7. For those that have a cat that scratches, please consider silicon claw covers. They go on with nail glue, and cost me approximately $20 a year for 4 cats.
  8. I will not refrain from speaking up against animal abuse. Declawing is inhumane. A person should not have an animal if they are going to abuse said animal. Cats that are declawed can live their whole lives in pain. For those that do not know the opposition to declawing PLEASE do the research.
  9. Yep, this is what I do most days. Math work definitely needs to be corrected. A mistake that isn't corrected today means it will probably be wrong again tomorrow.
  10. I am curious how you handle foreign languages, especially if you have a child with a big interest in languages. We live in a town with a lot of interactions with French speakers, so they really should learn it for practical reasons. I want them to learn Latin and ASL. They want to learn Latin, Greek, Arabic, and Italian. How many languages can practically be taught at the same time? I can easily outsource Arabic, French, and Latin.
  11. Uh, that kid shouldn't be driving. I expect a kid (or anyone) to occasionally skirt the law, cross a line of some kind, or lie to parents from time to time. Someone that lies or deceives a parent when it comes to a law that could endanger other people? No way. Kid needs his license taken away and a lesson on moral responsibility before they can be trusted again. My boyfriend and friend were killed in a car accident when we were 17. It's disgusting to mess around with traffic laws, and I don't have much respect for a teen that feels they are "morally superior" in this regard.
  12. How strange. I am an atheist. Like as atheist as one can get. My kids did an entire semester devoted to American art, focusing on the Southwest and West for their art history program. I spent 8 weeks staring at Utah looking landscapes and rock formations. Look, the Good and Beautiful is problematic in a lot of ways, but pushing LDS doctrine is not one of them.
  13. BYL is wonderful. I can't describe why I like it so much. It's...comforting? The book choices are excellent. The levels are fluid, so you could likely use the same level with all three kids and just give the younger one some different books choices. I also love BYL because you can easily adapt it to fit your teaching style. Just out of the box it's a full curriculum (other than math), but if you want to add more rigor you can easily add in more LA or whatever. I'd say the only con is that it's not technical in language arts for one of my kids. This is a kid that wants a lot of technical instruction in writing and spelling, but we would run into that problem with whatever we choose.
  14. That is the progression my oldest did. It has been 6 years, so my memory is a little foggy. But I know they went into Singapore Primary 2 right after Math in Focus.
  15. Yes! Mine loved the Herp class. If the schedule worked we would absolutely take it.
  16. We just watched the Martian and it prompted a long conversation about a variety of topics- Is The Martian based in reality, is it Sci-FI, what programs are Nasa working on that were in the film, what are the implications of colonizing another planet. I honestly couldn't believe how much the kids talked about this movie!
  17. Thank you for the replies. This was helpful! I think I'll buy the program and see which components I can fit in. Julie is so calming, so having some part of her work in our school can't hurt.
  18. I don't have the book yet. I am looking for sample schedules. Brave Writer seems to have a lot of components.
  19. I love Julie Bogart. Adore her. I've been listening to her lectures and talks for years, but have never used the program. I'd like to use Faltering Ownership next year...but I don't understand it. Is there a schedule that I don't see? How do I plan this thing? Thanks!
  20. In the past I believe the tests arrived a few weeks before the administration dates. I think they are later this year.
  21. The Librarians feature smart, cool characters. Same goes for Warehouse 13. Neither are gory, but do show some fighting and violence since they are both mystery/detective type.
  22. Agreed. I had hedgehogs as pets as a kid and then started taking in rescues as an adult. It's horrifying how neglected most of them are. The hedgehog culture is super dangerous.
  23. I've had hedgehogs my whole life. They are NOT for everyone. In fact, I think they are not for most people. Hedgehogs require socialization with their owners from a vey early age. Hedgehogs don't change behavior past 22 months (or around), so whatever habits and behaviors they have will be set by then. Hedgehogs anoint themselves which means they basically cover their bodies in foamy saliva. They can get mites and fleas. They require Revolution treatments like cats and dogs. They can bond with one person and reject all others. They can be finicky with nutritional needs. A lot of the hedgehog people online are misinformed and, unfortunately, have created a culture around hedgehogs that is really damaging. They are not pets in the way other animals can be.
  24. 7th grade!?!?! Math- Algebra...AOPS? I honestly don't know because I thought she wouldn't start it until 8th, but she will be ready by September, or December at the latest. Science- Carbon Chemistry the first semester, advanced chemistry the second semester. The Story of Science by Hakim for both semesters History- Bookshark level 7. English- Analytical Grammar. Vocabulary from Classical Roots. BraveWriter. Journalism- Elements of Journalism. Foreign Language- Latin. I'm not totally sure what program yet. I will give an evaluation in June and make a decision then. She's also taking ASL next year. Literature (Books I assign and we discuss)- A Demon Haunted World, Diary of Anne Frank, Doubt: A History, Animal Farm. We will also do poetry.
