  1. Is there a placement test for Wordly Wise 3K Online? Nevermind, it says there are pre-tests for each grade level.
  2. I've been using Spelling Workout A,B and C and agree with the people who criticize it as busy work. While the books will give a few spelling "pointers" at the beginning of each lesson, the word lists seem to be a bit randomly thrown together to me. I think the only reason either of my daughters learned anything with this was due to my following a "one new, two review" pattern when giving a test at the end of each lesson, then making them write each misspelled word five times, basically forcing them to memorize the words without really understanding spelling rules. I'm now looking for something different, that would kind of take the phonics approach of Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading and apply it to spelling. Based on what I read here I was thinking of trying Spellwell. Is it a program that you can start in the middle for an older student with so, so spelling, or do you really need to start it from the beginning to get all the rules?
  3. Thanks so much for pointing me to the WWE evaluation. We'll do that and then go from there.
  4. We're living in a non-English speaking country. We speak English in the home, and I've been supplementing the rudimentary English taught at the public school over the years with private lessons and home schooling material from the WTM, like the Ordinary Parent's Guide to Reading, Writing with Ease L1 and the Pearson Spelling Workouts A,B, and currently C. My daughter is 11, and I feel that while her English reading skills are reasonably OK for her age, her composition skills are atrocious, both in the local language and English. We're currently going through First Language Lessons Level 3 and I'm not sure were to continue in the WWE or the Writing with Skill series. Basically, I was thinking of either doing WWE L4 or WWS L1 next, but wasn't sure how to choose what would be best for her. After doing WWE L1, I think L2 and L3 would probably be too easy, but I got the impression from the Amazon reviews that WWE L4 is kind of a remedial / transitional level if the child isn't quite ready for WWS L1. We'll probably homeschool full time this coming year, and most of the instruction will be in English, with a private tutor a few times a week to continue her education in the local language.
  5. I'm most likely going to homeschool my elder daughter this coming year ( she's 11 ) and one of the area's I'm really concerned about is socialization and emotional intelligence - Social Emotional Learning (SEL). I've been doing a little reading on the subject, and was looking for practical resources that would be useful in a home schooling environment. I ran across a post on edutopia, Using Digital Games for SEL Assessment and Skill Building, which discusses a few SEL software games, and was wondering if anyone here had any experience with any of them or this subject in general. The ones listed in the article are ZooU, Ripple Effects and Social Express. Independantly I ran across another called GoStrengths.
