R&S Grammar--Textbook as Workbook?
jaredluvsjoanie replied to sea_mommy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Quite a few people use them as consumable, especially the third and fourth grade levels. -
I highly recommend Latina Christiana as well.

Oops! I hit "reply" too soon. I just want to say, Ellie, that you are my inspiration. -
Most ENGAGING grammar book?
jaredluvsjoanie replied to Esse Quam Videri's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
My kids all really like both Giggly Grammar and I Laid an Egg on Aunt Ruth's Head. -
:D Also, on masterbooks.com they have both algebra and the newest edition of Jacobs Geometry, released just this month! They have really good pricing on the textbooks, teacher guides, and solution manuals, but also offer package deals that save a few bucks. If you like PDF versions of things, everything is also offered in that format! Shipping is free over $75. Woohoo! Now I just need to make up my feeble mind what I want....

Middle School Math Options

I vote for Rod and Staff. Inexpensive and very effective -- a winning combination! -
I know some African-Americans who actually prefer the term Negro. Also, if it is TRULY offensive, perhaps the United Negro College Fund should find a new moniker. There also seems to be no problem with the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). It is correct that the terms in the book reflect the author's time. It is also true that terms fall in and out of favor through time and from region to region. Something acceptable in one part of the country may not be acceptable elsewhere. You are right to be concerned that your son may absorb something and later inadvertently cause offence, but this is also a great opportunity for discussion in your family. Our present day has seen great strides in the acceptance of others, but, sadly, we also have the regrettable condition of hyper-sensitivity where everyone and his dog is looking for opportunities to be offended and relegate themselves to a status of perpetual victimhood.

When do I start? Advice and feedback on curriculum choices
jaredluvsjoanie replied to highspirits's topic in PreK and K
:) No problem, Ellie! I was just wanting to be sure I wasn't totally messing up something vital. I'm pretty new to this forum, but from what I've read, your opinion is valued around these parts. -
WTM New Grammar Program coming out soon...
jaredluvsjoanie replied to michaeljenn's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I understand it to be chiefly aimed at 5-8, but, like any upper grammar, i suppose it could be used to bolster upper grades. -
When do I start? Advice and feedback on curriculum choices
jaredluvsjoanie replied to highspirits's topic in PreK and K
Genuinely curious, Ellie. What is the reasoning behind learning to draw circles clockwise? I am asking because: 1) I have always done --and taught-- the opposite, and 2) cursive writing goes counter-clockwise for O's, A's, etc. Am I missing something really important? -
WTM New Grammar Program coming out soon...
jaredluvsjoanie replied to michaeljenn's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
In a previous post a week or so ago, someone asked about the same thing. SWB replied and confirmed that Advanced Language Lessons (all four years) is complete, in production, and will be available for the coming school year. It consists of a single comprehensive teacher manual and seperate workbooks and answer keys for each respective level. Yay! -
Remembering our missing members...
jaredluvsjoanie replied to Lori D.'s topic in General Education Discussion Board
That was very nice, Lori D. Since I am pretty new around here, I will make it a point to read the booklists, etc. -
Not skipping ahead also gives the benefit of "getting to know" Harold Jacobs and become familiar with his methods and teaching style. Review of concepts is a helpful thing, but reviewing material presented in a different way can awaken the mind to greater understanding and may well expose some gaps that neither of you realized were there.

8Arrows4theLord I am glad you started this thread. (Negativity is very easily scrolled past). The gentle reassurance from so many who have responded has buoyed my resolve to help my little people have the best possible start that I am able to give. I appreciate everyone's insights and the different perspectives that have given so much food for thought.

How many books is too many?

I don't think I really want to know the answer to this question. So many other this already cause me guilt and self-doubt. :D -
Solid Grammar with Colorful Worksheets/Workbooks?
jaredluvsjoanie replied to OrganicMom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Of that, I am unsure. Let's keep our fingers crossed! If you go over to the high school board, you will see a post titled GRAMMAR FOR THE WELL-TRAINED MIND? that was posted today referencing a new class as part of the online academy. Susan Wise Bauer responded and gave the information that I shared. I have also read other little bits from her this past week or two in other scattered posts. :D -
Solid Grammar with Colorful Worksheets/Workbooks?
jaredluvsjoanie replied to OrganicMom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Yes, all four levels will be available. Apparently it will consist of one instructor text containing all levels and seperate workbooks and answer keys for the respective levels. It is in typesetting now. Whee!
