  1. I hope I'm not the only one on here that is bothered by this statement.
  2. I'm interested in finding out about this, as well. We're doing BJU science 4 w/o videos this year. It's going well, but I will have less time next year with a 1st and 2nd grader plus 3 preschoolers. Trying to decide whether to use the videos for 5th grade DD or not.
  3. This sounds like my 8 year old DD. What's she going to be like at 12?!
  4. Green Toys vehicles are a favorite with my boys. Super sturdy and made from recycled milk jugs.
  5. I would be thrilled if Halloween was discarded.
  6. Wood! I actually made ours out of an old end table. Pinterest has some adorable ideas.
  7. Thank you! I'm in the trenches right now with an 8, 6, 5, 3, and 1 year old and a baby due in December. It's tough most days but every now and then I see glimpse of what the children are becoming and it gives me hope and encouragement to keep going.
  8. We switched from Apologia to BJU, as well, and it was a very good change for us. I'm enjoying teaching science and DD is really learning and retaining the information.
  9. Because I don't relish the idea of being used as an object for gratifying my husband's passions for someone else, even if that other person is imaginary.
  10. My husband's childhood was boring. His parents didn't have much of anything except kids . They lived in a rural area, homeschooled, went to church twice a week and traveled once a year or so to visit relatives. They had very few toys, so he spent most of his time after school outside playing with toads and riding his bike. He turned out to be a hard-working, loving, humorous man that is well-liked and respected by just about everyone who knows him. I'm not sure that his boring childhood was such a bad thing.
  11. A family in our area (we don't know them personally) recently lost their 3 year old daughter in a tragic accident. My husband attended the visitation and the parents expressed that they would like us to bring our family by to meet their children, since ages are similar and their kids are having a very hard time right now. I d like to take a little something for the children, but not knowing them personally and having no idea of their interests, I'm coming up short on ideas. Can anyone help me here? The age range is 1-7 year olds.
  12. Wendy's side salad and chili or subway sandwich.
  13. I've had 5 babies so have had a little bit of experience with getting babies to sleep at night. :-) Barring any medical issues this might work: Does the baby share a room with the toddler? If so, and you're concerned about waking the toddler, could you move the baby to another part of the house where it wouldn't disturb the toddler? Then get a pack n play or something similar that baby can't get out of and let him sleep in that. If he wakes at night pat him, offer water and tell him that night time is for sleeping. Then go back to bed. You probably would have to repeat this several times during the night until he realizes that that you won't be getting him up. It might take a few nights but he would eventually come to the conclusion that it's no fun to wake in the middle of the night.
  14. Heat butter in a skillet. Add broccoli, salt and pepper and stir for a minute or two. Reduce heat and cover. Cook until still firm but not crunchy. Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top and remove from heat. Serve when cheese has melted.
  15. I had a post over in the k-8 forum that has completely disappeared. I was really wanting to go back and read over it again but I can't find it anywhere.
  16. Thank you for this detailed response! You've given me some things to chew on.
  17. Ok, I know this is well in advance of when I'll actually need this info, but I'm a planner and we're camping this weekend so I've got some free time to think this through. :-) I've been drawn to MFW for a long time but have never used it. Next year I will have a 5th grader, 2nd grader and 1st grader. My current 4th grader is doing ancient history this year and i really would like to keep going with that. But I also know that MFW recommends starting with ECC. Would it be feasible to put 5th grader in Rome to Reformation and the 1st and 2nd grader in Adventures or would that be way too much work for me as the teacher? Should I put everyone in ECC (not really the 1st grader, she could just tag along with the read alouds).
  18. That's how my Alabama grandmother said it, too. :-)
  19. To the OP, I was very similar to you with my oldest child. She showed an interest in learning around the age of 3 , so I swooped in and decided she was going to learn! Rod and Staff preschool books at 3, full-blown, pull-out-all-the-stops Phonics curriculum at 4, and 1st grade at 5. She learned, too, with lots of tears and frustration, from child and teacher. She's in 4th grade now, and despite our less-than-ideal start is doing fine, but I have a lot of regrets in pushing her that hard. I think she could have learned in a few months what it took me several years to teach her. I agree wholeheartedly with the advice already given to let them play. Read to them, surround them with an environment that is rich in learning experiences, and then relax and take a deep breath. They are learning far more than you realize. The time will come quickly enough when they have to bend their heads over books and won't be able to play all day, but prolong that carefree stage of childhood as long as you can. Hugs, mama. I know it's hard to know the balance between doing too much and not enough.
  20. We eat breakfast and supper together as a family with DH. The children and I eat lunch together. The table is cleared after every meal and kept clear between meals. We have a separate table in the schoolroom that is used for school, arts/crafts and folding laundry. I'm sure this helps to keep the dining table free for meals.

  22. Hits: CLE Math4 and Language Arts 4 BJU Science 4 Logic Liftoff I Can Do All Things Art Misses: Mystery of History-I think I'm just not using it correctly. I'm sure it's a great program.
  23. I've done this with my DD. When I am confident she understands how to work the problem, but is just being careless in doing it correctly, I will tell her she can skip the next 3 problems if she gets the first 3 correct, for example. That has been a huge motivator in making sure she does things correctly.
  24. This probably isn't the most healthy but equal parts Italian dressing and soy sauce make the best marinade. Let sit at least overnight.
