  1. Amanda Gorman was amazing. And I loved seeing Eugene Goodman, who put his life on the line to lead rioters away from the Senate on January 6th, escorting Kamala Harris at her inauguration.

  2. Amanda Gorman was amazing! I watched it live and have already rewatched her once.

  3. It was wonderful! I loved the fact that so many of the First Ladies coordinated and wore purple for unity. I loved Bernie Sanders's home knit mittens. I loved that Pence was there. I thought Lady Gaga did a great job of being herself, and while she definitely looked like Mockingjay, she didn't distract from anything. I loved the flags. I loved that Garth Brooks sang. I loved Eugene Goodman being there as security. I LOVED Amanda Gorman's poem. A friend said, "Amanda Gorman's poem is why the tyrant fears the poet," which seemed perfect. I loved Biden's speech. I was so worried

  5. It makes sense to wait instead of getting and quickly moving a cat. I do think it does a powerful man good to step in the occasional wet hair ball.

  7. Probably a good idea: a DC cat will have a naturally better transition to the presidential life. This cat must be ready to meet the high expectations of being the true ruler of the White House -- though being only the Cat in Chief instead of His Royal Meow may sting a bit, depending on the breed. Keeping dogs in check without losing the aloofness befitting his position... I'm not saying a Delaware cat couldn't do it, as much as they may not be as inclined to be as politique about it.

  8. I told my daughters that Gaga was dressed like a person from Hunger Games, “but in a good way.” 😂 I thought her costume a good compromise between her personal tastes and a nod to the decorum of the event. What I most enjoyed was the emotion on her face.

  9. I thought it was very well done. I was looking forward to seeing what Lady Gaga would wear. I thought she did a good job of being Lady Gaga and yet not distractingly so. Amanda Gorman was amazing. I also thought the flags were very moving.

  11. Directions as written in the book: "Write a sentence using girth. You might want to write about the girth of a whale." Response as written by the student: "You might want to write about the girth of a whale." I can't decide if I should give credit for ingenuity or mark it wrong for not creating their own sentence. Either way we've had a very good laugh around here. ETA: This is for 7th grade and the student very much knows what girth means.

  13. Harrowing as it’s been, this whole election season has been such a great civics lesson for my kids. Not usually a Lady Gaga fan but she knocked it out of the park. Was I the only one who thought “mockingjay” about the dove on her dress though? 😂. That’s not political commentary, my son and I just had a good laugh over it!

  14. I had to take glimpses while working. Lady Gaga was amazing. Amazing. Biden’s speech was excellent. The young poet laureate - Amanda? -she has placed herself in the realm of historic orators. So very good.

  15. I enjoyed watching Amanda Gorman was fantastic, Lady Gaga surprised me with a beautiful rendition. I did enjoy the encouraging speeches. This morning I led my first breakout discussion section of the semester. I outline expectations to set the tone for the semester. I know full well, many of the students will never fulfill all my expectations and I may not fulfill all of mine, but the expectations are necessary none the less. Biden's speech aknowledged that our reality is much different than our ideal, but if we are to be a united nation, we must define and refine that ideal. Biden

  17. Bernie Sanders' coat and mittens were pretty awesome. I'm always in awe at the lighter jackets in DC in January, although Michelle Obama's outfit was superb. Sanders actually looked like he was prepared for winter. I saw it described on Twitter as "Vermont grandfather chic". LOL. Yep, Amanda Gorman was the hit. Lady Gaga did a great job today.

  18. Amanda Gorman stole the whole show. She is amazing. Loved Biden's speech. Lady Gaga, didn't wow me with her signing. It was ok. J. Lo through me for a loop with the "lets get loud" in the middle of her song. Garth Brooks sounded great. I loved as Pence was leaving that he and Harris were so civil to each other. Even laughing together. What a great example, that this year you can't take for granted. I was in tears during every song. They took such bigger meaning after Jan 6th.. It was really healing to have this moment at the capitol. My kids h

  22. I'm enjoying all the Bernie memes based on that outfit and those gloves and the fact that he apparently grabbed some mail that he was carrying around before coming. Love him or hate him, he's just always on brand and always himself. Doug Emhoff's daughter had a cool coat. To note about the women and how everyone was dressed... it was chilly because it was windy, but it wasn't that bad. I took a walk in nothing heavier than a jacket earlier. I think Bernie just has a lot of Vermont level winter clothes.

  23. Full credit. It fulfills all the requirements. Nowhere did it state that the student had to invent their own sentence; the instruction said "write". ETA: I am answering this question as a college instructor who has to be extremely careful in phrasing all exam questions to be precise and completely unambiguous, because if my instructions were this sloppy, I would have to expect this line of argumenting from my students and would have to agree with them.

  26. I'm sorry this is so stressful for you all... I agree that you did nothing wrong. You caught it when any other discerning mom would have caught it. Who would ever suspect something like a thyroid issue for an 11 year old! I remember when my dd (who was probably also around 11) who's usually an enthusiastic hard worker told me she just didn't feel like helping to rake the yard one day with her siblings. She was still her happy self, just kept sneaking off to sit down somewhere, and I thought she was trying to get out of work so kept prodding her to get back to work. That evening, it final

  29. The only proper way to get a cat is to have one walk in your house after you've cooked dinner and demand food and optionally cuddles. Any other method is cheating. (This is the exact method we used to get all our cats. It's really amazing how often this happens to us!)

  33. It was beautiful and inspiring! Gives me hope again. I thought the benediction was so inspiring. Amanda Gorman is a true gift to society. We will be memorizing more poetry this year because of her. This all made me think, there is so much power in our words. I think this will help me get through the February homeschooling slump. No relaxing on sentence diagramming or Latin!! My 7-year-old said he will always remember this day and the wonderful "Joe-nuts" we made to celebrate. (Doughnuts we made to celebrate Joe's inauguration, lol.)

  34. I agree, the clothes are wonderful. On the other hand, I can't help thinking how much Vice President Harris must be wishing for her Chuck Taylors. I keep cringing as I see her and Dr. Biden's heels on the marble steps of the Capitol, and then in the parade.

  36. I think the vast majority of college bound kids are not taking AP classes for the credits so much, but for meeting the standard of taking the most rigorous courses offered at the school. The Common App asks a question about rigor specifically, and how the student's rigor compares to others at the school.

  37. I keep thinking of this also. If everyone is exceptional, no one really is. Personally, I am not sure how to process all of this. The only AP class I had in school was Spanish III and I didn't take the exam. When I was in school, it was the very high-achieving/gifted kids that took APs. Stepping on the soap box: I am personally feeling very averse to entering the rat-race. My cousin's kids have taken five to seven APs per year in high school. So have my brother's kids. When I look at what my brother's kids have had to do, the first word that comes to mind is "work-horse." Caus

  39. Sold 2 items today and met the people at Goodwill so my two oldest and I popped in real quick to take a look around. We found 2 pairs of Air Nikes in near new condition for $5 each. We'll be able to sell one pair for $70 and the other for $100. Also found a Vera Bradley bag for $3 that we should make $20 on (dd found that one all on her own, I almost didn't get it.) I don't know purses.

  40. What happens now is kids who want to try for semi competitive schools will have to pile up those APs in huge quantities. Before we could chose to do a mixture of AP (when we thought courses were worth taking) and some SAT 2s (for validation). In our personal example, we no longer have an option of taking SAT2 for a foreign language. We don’t want a DE class because they are just tremendous amount of busywork. What is the only remaining option? AP. Makes me want to cry. There are other areas where this is going to directly affect my student. I am not going to play that game and likely pay the p

  45. As empty nesters, dh and I wash one load of clothes a week, so pjs get washed then. But in full disclosure, when we had four kids here and washed clothes every day, my pjs weren’t washed more often than once a week. In fact, maybe less often because I was already overloaded with laundry. Dd has four kids and I recently saw her enormous pile of clean laundry ready to be folded. I gasped. She reminded me that it was like that at our house for years. How quickly I forget.

  46. Singing is a way to feel alive and way to express joy. The greatest thing a person can do is to encourage others to their express joy (or even their sorry) by singing. Really. Encourage others to lift their voices in song. The amount of good you'll do (especially with the talentless) will vastly exceed the pain of off-key singing. These are people we love. Yah? Feel blessed they open themselves to us by singing. No words are more life affirming than "I love it when I hear you sing," especially when they are sincere words. Has nothing to do with "talent," but rather the position
