  1. Soooo happy! This is her always-boyfriend, whom she has known more years of her life than not; a fellow homeschooler (homeschooled all the way through) and just a terrific guy. Very happy about it!

  2. Do not think twice, sign up for the lunches. Your mental and physical health are far more important than worrying about whether or not you qualify or need the help.

  4. I am doing really well. I had my test on 11/9. I only have some lingering tiredness. Mostly just need a nap and to go to bed early. I am surprised but thankful that it did not go to my lungs. I have asthma and it generally does. It is such a weird virus. We have a close friend who is hospitalized right now but is improving.

  5. My 87 year old dad was released from the hospital yesterday. He is doing well and so happy to be home. He did end up with pneumonia, but seems to be fighting it off. We are so grateful to the health care workers who took such great care of him. My 50-ish year old female friends are struggling some. One is still exhausted a month out, the other is still symptomatic 15 days after positive test, probably 20 days post exposure. But no “serious” symptoms for either right now.

  6. Take the lunches because it makes your life easier. Donate money to a suitable cause so you don't feel like you're taking away from the needy.

  7. Putin’s brother already had two dogs, but now there are two puppies. One is a small chocolate lab. I couldn’t get a picture of it because he already thinks I am super weird. The other is older and maybe a golden? It’s not the best picture because, again, awkward... The monolith has a Christmas ornament now instead of a pumpkin.

  8. We are getting the free lunches. The USDA has funded the grants through the school year. The USDA funds the school district based on how many meals are actually distributed. The school districts use the funds—and keeps their cafeteria workers employed, keeps contracts with farmers funded, and provides free foods to kids 0-18 (no enrollment required). This is a win-win-win scenario because presumably this frees up funds for families who can spend on other things. Our district delivers meals via bus routes. ETA: our district begs people to sign up because they have had budget cuts

  9. Take the lunches!! No guilt that's why they are offered to everyone because they know their are other reasons besides money that make it hard to provide a good lunch.

  11. Our best friends' whole family caught it. The husband has an auto-immune condition, the wife has a major heart condition. He was pretty wiped out, and is still coughing and tired. Her biggest symptom was insomnia, which was new to me. She also battled a migraine for the length of the illness. She got it less severe than the husband. All 4 of their kids caught it and it was mild for them. Overall I'm breathing a big sigh of relief because they were people in my life that I was really concerned about catching it.

  13. Am I the only one who this song drives me crazy? Like, I *WANT* to like it. But especially when it's sung by a man, it just sounds insulting and man-splaining. And also, I want to yell at the radio, "YES!!!! Yes, she knew! It's RIGHT THERE in the Magnificat in Luke 1: 46-55!!!" I shouldn't complain. It's still better than "Christmas Shoes." But still.

  15. Take the lunches. You've had an exhausting difficult year even before round 2 of covid, your kids qualify, and it will make your life easier. You're not taking anything away from anyone by accepting, and you might be HELPING people get similar help next year. The only reason you are even questioning this is that you are depressed. Take the lunches and don't think twice about it. At some point in the future when things are settled down and you actually have money in savings for emergencies, then find a charity that helps people in your area. A food bank or something. Don't worry about it

  16. I swore off the internet yesterday, so late Happy Thanksgiving! We had turkey, cornbread dressing, green beans, cranberry sauce, mac & cheese (Pioneer Woman's first recipe), dinner rolls. Gymnast was in charge of desserts: rice crispy treats, cookies, pumpkin pie. We ate dinner while watching the original Miracle on 34th street. Only then may Christmasy things begin. There are no Christmas movies or music until after Thanksgiving. I made up that rule and strictly enforce. They turned on the lights yesterday too. Today, I worked a bit on classes, we took a walk in the river, and

  19. I like the song - I have no preference over a male or female vocalist. Yes, she knew the prophecies about the Savior, and she knew the baby she was bearing would grow up to fulfill all those prophecies - but I've come to appreciate there is a difference between intellectual understanding, and really knowing. The differences between a written description, a postcard - and being there. There are simply things you can read all the written descriptions in the world - and not understand until you actually experience it. She knew he was going to be the Savior and save all the sons and d

  21. Okay, so this may be way off base because I can't remember all the words right now, and it's Friday night and I'm lazy and don't want to look it all up. All that said, I think that while Mary knew how his conception came about, and many other things, I think the way it played out was unexpected. Jesus didn't do what people thought the Messiah was going to do. He wasn't a military leader like so many were expecting. His mission was a lot deeper. So in that way, Mary didn't really know how it was all going to play out.

  23. Don't even think twice about it. DO. IT. I've been getting the lunches for my kids. My kids are homeschooled, but the district has made it clear that the lunches are for ALL kids. When I was going through a depressive episode a couple of months ago, picking up the lunches helped so much. DO IT.

  24. Is there a charity like that? I could look. This is a state funded grant. I suspect it is based on last year’s school population and they’ve lost 30% to actual homeschooling this year, so there’s fewer students enrolled than the grant is intended for. I could definitely increase my donation to the local charity that provides toys for Christmas in my county. I know the need is high and funds are low this year. This is a good idea.

  25. 1st: My oldest dd got engaged but they want to wait until 2022 because they want to get married on their anniversary of their first date. That's what they celebrate every year so they don't want a second date to worry about. It will be on a Friday in 2022, so dd plans to have an evening wedding. She chose a wonderful venue but I haven't seen it in person yet. Her dad paid the deposit and said he didn't need to see it but she really wants to share it with me so we need to choose a day I can make it. 2nd: My hours at work increased again. I'm full time again. We just don't have the staff w

  27. I use it but rarely just let shipments arrive on thier own. I am constantly changing shipment days and skipping months. I also have had prices swing wildly (one item doubled in price) so I make sure to check each item. I use subscribe and save to get the discount, not for the convenience. I liked the old interface better. They changed it this year and I find it much more cumbersome to move things around.

  29. We've been using a room in the basement as a tv room/home theater for a few years. 2ds's desk has also taken up a large corner . . . . He moved to another room - where he can have much more space (especially as he's been doing a lot of working from home. He has zero motive to move out when his commute is two miles and we're in a HCOL area.) But, it's almost done! 1ds rewired it, 7.1 sound (not particularly expensive speaker, as I had a pretty limited budget when I bought them - but I can upgrade later) I found a theater seating set - power and LED for dirt cheap (probably because

  30. You have seen the ornament before. He had it up last year. So, his brother does not have a Russian accent. He has a slight Southern accent. And he's kind of suspicious about me taking pictures of his property, so I don't think I'm going to get a picture of him himself. Sorry. Maybe I'll tell my husband I need spy glasses for Christmas with a camera in the glasses?

  31. Ah! I see. Ok...I’m not sure if you’ve now ruined it for me when it’s sung by a man. 😄 Next time I hear it on a radio sung by a man, I’ll report back and let you know if you’ve ruined Christmas for me. 🤪

  32. And..I just ordered an $88 pair of leggings. And..I don't feel guilty. I was finishing a 90 plus minute "Burn" DDP Yoga class a week ago, and as I melted into a puddle on my mat I realized...this is why women buy expensive leggings - because they DESERVE IT gosh darn it! I've now done at least 30 minutes of exercise daily for over 40 days, including one yoga workout a day and some cardio. I'm buying my fancy pants!

  35. I actually love this song. I have always looked at it from more of a "did you understand" perspective. She knew who he was but did she know how it was going to play out. The best version of the song for me is by the a capella group Pentatonix. I think it a stunning rendition that approaches the lyrics with a sense of awe and wonder.

  36. Yes. Pigs are just as intelligent, just as social, and just as emotional as dogs. There is no *logical* reason we should not be just as horrified by their abuse as we would be by dog abuse. And pigs endure horrible, torturous treatment, in raising, in transport, and in slaughter. I know these things. I just need to do something about it.

  37. Please accept the support the universe is offering to make your life a little easier! And although I think the idea of a donation is lovely, I wouldn't want it to add any complication or extra tasks to your plate. Charitable donations are their own separate issue, that you can address whenever or however you like. I'm guessing you have enough going on that that time is not now. But if--and only if--you're presently drawn to that idea and can easily implement it, go ahead. Just do whatever makes your life a simpler right now. My guess is that's just accepting the lunches.

  38. Exactly. Earlier this year I got lunches for my daughter because it gave her a sense of normalcy in an upside down covid world. I have previously gotten extra snacks from the school as my foster boys were used to getting them and again it provided normalcy and security for them. Take the lunches.

  39. Yeah, that's where I tend to come down. I don't want to cause pain and death, at least directly. I've been trying to be pescatarian and not vegetarian, because I'm (possibly heartlessly) less concerned about creatures that don't seem to have family relationships, but for me, that was the ethical consideration. Of course, DH points out that a lot of farming actually involves killing creatures and that when we grow grain, we kill a lot of mice along the way, but it still feels different to me. Hey, I don't have to be totally utilitarian at all times... 😉

  42. I am late, but I have seen this line of thought be harmful for some students. I would not lock a college freshman into a particular degree path based on the level of debt they are ok taking. I would really try to limit at federal loans (31K) for any student. That type of debt is not likely to be forever life limiting regardless of path. Even if your student is planning on going into engineering and average salary is 100K, they are likely to need to move to a HCOL area to get that. Suppose they change majors? Suppose they have a crises and need to quit college for a bit. You will need to

  43. Christmas Carol is the country christmas song that makes me sob like an idiot if it comes on while I'm driving. I'm a sap. Christmas shoes I turn off to avoid depressing myself. I find "Do They Know it's Christmastime" to be very condescending. But the song I have a VISCERAL reaction to - gut clenching, reflexively covering my ears or reaching to turn it off if I can - is Wonderful Christmastime by Paul McCarntey. The chorus HURTS MY BRAIN. I don't know why, but if you ever wanted to torture me, play that song. UGH. Makes me want to puke. Nothing to do with the lyrics, it's just the soun

  44. My understanding (from an extended contact who has a PhD in microbiology & a long career in virus research & public health) is that the risk of picking up the virus from surfaces is very low, especially if one practices decent (not obsessive) hand washing. Yes, it can live on surfaces, but it really needs the moisture in respiratory droplets in order to remain viable enough to cause infection. He said that that it's "plausible" that the most vulnerable might pick it up from a surface, but, really, if someone catches it, it's cuz they were in proximity to someone else who has it, with s

If you're on subscribe and save, you are a priority order in a shortage, just below the govt. entities/hospitals that get priorities on certain things. We get several other things through S&S that are inconsistently carried at the local stores or a preferred brand.

I was getting the Advent Calendar together and dealing with frustratingly stupid decorative doodads that wouldn't stay in place and I swear if one more person comes in to ask me when Advent starts I'm going to throw a major tantrum. (NO Slache! I saw that look in your eyes!) On a happier note, I have my proper Christmas smelling tree set up on the front porch. I made some little Advent treat bags for dd22 to take back and share with her roommates. Dh is cooking spaghetti for dinner. 47. Here's the thing that I keep coming back to: animals don't want to die. They want to live. And they do experience fear and pain and distress and loss. I don't want to be the cause of that, although I am a hypocrite at the moment and still am. Here's just a tiny example: I had to catch my canary the other day to trim her nails. She likes and trusts me, generally speaking. But canaries have an inborn fear of being caught. They are tiny birds, the kind that get preyed upon. I had to chase her around her cage a bit and she was squawking out alarm calls. When I finally caught her, she let out
