Suitable for Gr 7 and up. Some mild language.
Building a Classical Music Library, Bill Parker -- $7 ppd (Retail $14.95)
This book is a very helpful guide for studying music history and appreciation. Covers each of the musical time periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, etc.), with descriptions and summarized biographies of the major composers from the period as well as some of their most famous works. The listings of famous works makes the book very useful as a guide to some of the best pieces to listen to and become familiar with. In addition to purchasing CDs and/or tracking down recordings on CD at the library, these days you can often find video of a live performance of a piece on Youtube, thus giving your children a chance to see the instruments as well as hear the piece. You can also watch for live performances of these most famous works in your area.
