  1. My dd once asked for an electric typewriter. Do they even still make them? She didn't get one for Christmas that year, but we did eventually pick one up at a yard sale.
  2. Make sure they don't have thrush. My son got it at about that age, and I thought I was just sore because of latching on poorly. Fortunately a lactation consultant at a WIC office clued in on what the real problem was. Both of us got treated for it and we never had any other problems.
  3. Right now I am hooked on Spite and Malice. It's a card game.
  4. We had Library class when I was in elementary. We learned how to use the card catalog, and the dewey decimal system. We learned how fiction books were organized by author and non fiction by topic. It was a useful class and I learned a lot there. We only had it once a week. But when my own kid went to elementary they didn't have library class anymore. The kids went to the library two at a time during class time to test on whatever book they had read and to check out a new one. Some kids never went to the library because they didn't like to read. I taught my dd all the stuff I learned in library class myself, because no one teaches that stuff at her school anymore.
  5. We turned our swingset/play structure into a chicken coop a year ago. But the actual swings are still there attached to the coop on the outside of the fence. The kids still sit on them from time to time to text or chat with a friend, but no one plays there anymore. :(
  6. My high school dd has been on class trips to the Outer Banks, Washington DC, including a visit to Busch Gardens, Atlanta, and New York City. Next year, her senior class is going to Disney World. I think these class trips only have to be marginally educational. Dd goes to a public school in a small town with high unemployment, and a low median income.
  7. Dh and I once fell asleep in the bathtub together. Dd age 3 came in and saw us there because she woke up to potty. We didn't know it until she asked about it the next day! But she's 18 now and doesn't seem to have been traumatized by the event.
  8. Those kids probably never saw anything other than a box mix cake or a supermarket cake. So many kids today never have real foods. Chicken nuggets and pizza and fruit roll ups is what they're used too.
  9. My son, 16 calls me mama. My daughters, 18 and 13 fluctuate between mom, mama, mommy, mother, and madre. I answer to all of them. My kids grandmothers are Nanny and Mamaw, and they still call them that when they're with them, but around age 9 they started referring to them as their grandmas to their friends.
  10. I let my kids got their licenses as soon as they are legally able. I want them to learn to drive while they are still at home in familiar surroundings and still under my authority. I think I would feel very nervous about an 18 year old going off to college with a brand new driver's license. Here driver's ed is free, and then you have to have your permit for 12 months before you are allowed a licence. I pay for the insurance, until they buy their own cars, then they get their own.
  11. About 9% of our take home. But it's a small house most people wouldn't consider. We got a good deal on it and we had a 15 year mortgage. Sometimes I wish we had bought a bigger nicer house, but when I figure the numbers like that, I'm pretty happy.
  12. Could you just make hooks on the ends of your wires and hook them together? Then use pliers to close the hooks to lock them together?
  13. I know someone who did a rent to own. She paid $5000 down and then made monthly payments for several years, maybe 3 or 4. But the house was never transferred into her name, and she didn't know that. When the owner of the house defaulted she lost the house because she had no legal claim to it. It was really sad because she lost the house just months after her husband died, and she had to move into an apartment.
  14. My mil told my sis in law, the only reason I breastfed my son was because I enjoyed it in an inappropriate way. I nursed him for 18 months.
