imeverywoman
Perhaps I ought to ask what is the highest level you intend to complete with your high schooler before you quit grammar or move on to another.
Quiver0f10
My oldest went through 9/10 and did it pretty much on her own. IMHO I felt it was over-kill for high school :D The rest of my kids will finish with book 8.
LynnG in Arizona
We finished Level 8 and tried the first book of 9/10. It was ridiculously detailed and nitpicky, and contained numerous grammar concepts that this well-read college grad had never even heard of. (hee hee, I know I just ended my last sentence with a preposition. ;)) I firmly believe that Level 8 is plenty, even for a rigorous education. :)
ereks mom
We got so burned out on grammar this year (8th grade) -- more so than any previous year. I think it's just that R&S grammar is so...thorough. i don't know if I can face another year of it. I'm thinking of getting level 8 just for reference and for occasional review. Brilliant
My dd did half of level 7 in 8th grade, then we decided we were done! I certainly learned more than I had ever known about grammar just by completing that much. My 7th grade ds is halfway through level 6, and he'll probably complete that and do 1/2 of level 7 in 8th grade also.
catsluvsushi
Several friends that used R&S said going through level 6 was fine and that they would be well prepared for the SAT.
LisaNY
We went through level 8. It was more than enough.
Catherine
Completed 7 with current tenth grader. Plenty. Current sixth grader on track to finish 8 by end of eighth grade and I will definitely quit there if we make it.
brendafromtenn
We finished R&S 4, 5, 6 and 7. Started 8 and went:001_huh: huh? Got about half way through. Sold it. Then we took a year "off" and did Winston grammar.....so we could focus on learning to write essays. This was in 9th grade. We called it grammar lite. But this is a great program. Works well for those hands on learners. Does a great job at teaching how to parse those sentences. That year EVERYONE in the family did Winston grammar. Saved a LOT of time for me. But I would not do this EVERY year. This year we have done a year with Analytical Grammar(10th). LOVE IT! It just BEAUTIFULLY finishes our study of Grammar. DS took the ACT in Feb.....and scored a 29 on the English Subtest. I think it is due in part to his R&S background.....And in part to Analytical Grammar. Looking back and planning for my littles. Here is what we will use with them. FLL 1st-4th (Know those parts of speech and basic diagramming) R&S 5th and 6th Winston Grammar 7th Analytical Grammar 8th/9th Analytical Grammar Reinforcement 10th-12th Hope that helps, Brenda (May not check back today.....This DS had throat swabbed on Friday for the Swine Flu.....Oh, joy.....Will know Tuesday if it really is the Swine Flu. Seems to be weathering well. He says he thinks he got the "runt" of the litter. HeeHee:001_smile:)
Sandy in Indy
DD completed 8, ds completed 7 and we called it done. Dd just graduated college as an English major.. Ds did a great job on the SAT's. That was plenty of grammar! We concentrated on literature and writing in hs.
Brindee
My ds is in 9th and finishing up level 7. He's ready for a change, so we'll head a different direction now. Dd did level 5 this year in 6th, and wants something else now, so we are heading to Queen's for a gentler approach (she struggles in grammar). MomsintheGarden
My two oldest finished both of the 9/10 books. It's thorough and nitpicky, but I felt it was worthwhile. They did all the work on their own, skipping most of the writing assignments (but reading the instructions). They checked their lessons, and I checked their tests. We switched to R&S from ABeka when my oldest was in 9th and 2nd oldest was in 7th. I plan to continue using it all the way through with my younger children. Both dh and I grew up in homes where grammar was not always used properly. We are trying to improve our own grammar, and we feel it's important to over-correct our children's grammar. ValRN
Sorry to hijack, but I'm also thinking about switching from Abeka grammar to R&S grammar (although I wanted grammar lite). My oldest DS will be in 9th next year and we will have completed through Abeka 8th. We are ready for a change....a relief. THough I know that R&S won't be a relief from Abeka, I am wondering how the transition went and how your dc liked R&S after Abeka. Was there anything not covered in Abeka that was new in R&S 9th? :bigear: Val in Southern MD
MomsintheGarden
Hi Val, It's been a couple of years, but they did just fine. Non-grammar-detail-oriented ds got a "B" in both (his only B's in high school), and grammar-detailed dd got "A's" in both. Both scored very well in standardized testing (Stanford, SAT, PSAT). They both liked it better than ABeka because the explanations and exercises seemed more clear. The diagramming style was the same for both (the format can vary slightly), and the transition seemed pretty smooth. My dc found the simple Mennonite artwork and lifestyle examples appealing, although they wouldn't want a full curriculum of it. Using a non-consumable textbook for this age is no problem. I did buy the optional Tests & Editing sheet consumable books - they were cheap and helpful. As you've heard, R&S can be a bit much, but for us it was just right. I'm glad we switched. Storm Bay
Right now I'm planning on having dd do through 9/10, not because she needs it on her SATs for for a degree in BioChem, but because of how much she hates literary analysis. She'll do some, of course, but we need to do something to get those English credits besides literary analysis (she loathes poetry), and this will be a good part of that. I could switch to something else, but I suspect dd will prefer sticking with the familiar in this case. Of course, if she finishes these before all of her English credits are done, we'll have to think of something besides expository writing, which will be part of this. I don't know if I'll do that for my other two, because it is probably overkill for most.

LadyR
We went through Level 8 but skipped all the writing Lessons since dd was using another writing program. Trying to remember...but we may have even spread the grammar over 2 years for that level.
Okie
Dd is finishing up R&S English 9/10 book 1 and will do book 2 next year for 10th grade. However, I plan to do only half the exercises and tailor the writing to go with history. My ds is in English 5 and I plan for him to make it at least through 8 (my older ds only made it through 6- it was too much for him, so I'm thinking it may be for younger ds also).
