What Science next for my 7th & 8th graders?

Recommended Posts

What would you recommend for science next year given what my 6th and 7th graders have had up to now:

Current 7th Grader:

7th Grade: Astronomy at co-op; Abeka 7th Grade Life Science through Abeka DVD & co-op class

6th Grade: Electronics and General Science at co-op

4th & 5th Grade: General Science at co-op

Current 6th Grader:

6th Grade: Life Science at co-op using the Abeka 7th grade book and General Science at co-op

4th & 5th Grade: General Science at co-op

So next year they both will be taking oceanography at co-op, but it seems they need something else as this co-op class is just once a week with no text book.

If Biology, Chemistry, and Physics are usually 10, 11, and 12 (or maybe 9, 10, and 11), what do you do in 8th grade?

Thank you.

I'd consider either physical science or geology. Physical science would introduce more basic, underlying science, so I'd prefer that unless their general science was stiff.

Typically around here, 7th grade is Life Science and 8th grade is Physical Science.

You could use Apologia General Science for the 7th grader which covers I believe the Scientific Method and some famous scientists, some geology and human anatomy.

For the 8th grader you could use the Apologia Physical Science, which is more like chemisty and physics.

Or you could use the Prentice Hall Science Explorer series, which a lot people on the boards use, but I personally found it too public school textbook-y (probably because that's what it's used for). They have complete courses in Life, Earth, and Physical Science.

Or...you could use Runkles Geography which, in my opinion is more like a physical geography and could be used for Earth Science.

I guess it just depends on the sequence you are going to have them take in high school.

I love to use Runkle's World Physical Geography for 8th grade. It fits in well between the elementary sciences and the high school sciences. It will definitely cause the student to step up his study skills in readiness for the high school sciences. It's also hard to fit in a good geography course in the high school track. It can be done with 7th graders as well - we used it in our co-op this year with 7th and 8th graders. This program lends itself to special projects and other fun activities. It's one of my all time favorite transition courses.

I really like both of these courses.
