Myra
Does the SAT Critical Reading portion actually test grammar? This is my son's weak area (along with Spelling) and I'm not sure if I should buy AG for Grade 10 or hope that the 3 years of Latin will be enought to help him with his English grammar for the SAT test. He is doing Vocab for the High School Student this year along with Lightning lit ....you can see his other courses below my signature here. Any Advice? Thanks, Myra
Gwen in VA
Skip the grammar text and buy an SAT prep workbook. The SAT does test grammar, but in an applied kind of way that is a bit unique to the SAT. The best way to prep for it is just to work through various SAT prep books.
Guest GaSueK
We used an ACT Test Prep book with my son, and it made a world of difference. He would have never been ready for the test without it. So I agree with skipping the grammar text and using an SAT Test Prep book instead. Sue
Maverick
Agreeing that a SAT prep book is best, and, FYI, it is actually the Writing portion of the test where you'll find the grammar questions. Critical Reading tests reading speed and comprehension and vocabulary. Writing tests grammar and "editing" skills along with the timed essay. Kareni
Two suggestions: If he isn't already doing so, have him do the SAT question of the day. Also, have him take a practice SAT test at home -- if not the whole test, then the Writing section. That will give you an idea of his actual strengths and weaknesses in that area and where he might best spend his time.
