Help me think through this, please...

Recommended Posts

My 14 yo dd struggles in school. Well, mostly she just doesn't like the work that it entails. Next year will be 9th grade for her...well, if my dh and I don't keep her in 8th grade one more year. Let's assume she will be in 9th grade.

I love the idea of doing history chronologically and adding in geography along the way. My dd isn't enamored with history, but does seem to like geography somewhat. She wants to do world geography this coming year, but I want to do World History combining geography.

The advantage of her way is that we can concentrate on one thing for the whole year, to focus, leaving history out of the picture. The advantage of my way is that what she likes will be spread out over 2 or more years, so she can do geography more in the long run.

I have been over this a million times and just can't seem to see straight anymore. Please help!

Thanks,

Margo

Well, my kids remember very little about geography when done with history. I've often thought a yr long course would be a great advantage and doing it first will given her a basis for where many historical events occurred. You could combine it with World Literature.

High school is a great time to specialize and tailoring it to your child makes homeschooling such an advantage.

Well, since she is struggles (at least with the workload;)) and geography is something that could potentially light a fire and move her toward enjoying learning...

I would be encouraging her to look at all the geography programs available. When she found one that made her grin, I would order it!

Thanks for taking the time to write! Yes, a year long course will help her, I now am sure of it. She has recently told me that she has a hard time understanding some of the history because she doesn't know where the story is taking place. This can only help her with that. :)

I had forgotten about that website! That will be great to utilize this coming year. And, yes, a little flame of excitement for learning something (even 'just' geography) might be stoked into something big. World Geography it is! :D
