rfhsmom
My boys (12 & 14) enjoy the TT Math they are using, but I am seeing a bit of a decline in their math skills. We did Saxon up to the TT pre-algebra level and they scored very high in math on their Iowa tests last year( 93rd and 99th percentile) My oldest just tested this week and said there were some things he did not know on the test(he scored 99th last year). Is this because of gaps in TT? I do not want to lose anything by having them use TT! Could anyone give me some supplemental ideas that would help and would be reasonably priced? Thanks! Brindee
When my ds was in 7th and using Saxon, he scored in the 78th percentile in the ITBS, lower than he'd ever done! In 8th grade he used TT Algebra 1, and scored 84%. This year he did LoF Advanced Algebra and scored 87%. Not sure what that says except that in our case TT seemed to help raise his score, and LoF seemed to help raise his score more. Part of that is that he did NOT like Saxon. He liked TT much more. He LOVES LoF! So, I think it's really possibly which program fits their learning style the best, not which program it is? Also, they could've had an off day, which can affect their scores a bit. Some friends of ours has a dd that scores in the high 90's most years, but this year, many of her scores were in the 70's and 80's. They're using the same things, the girl seemed to be learning well, so they don't know why she scored lower. Puberty maybe??? Just some thoughts...... rfhsmom
Okay, I never even thought of the puberty thing:lol: Thanks for straightening out my thoughts about math programs a bit. (Use what works and what they enjoy) I just needed someone else's insight and live in a small, remote area where the homeschool community is not connected. Thanks so much for your comments. You have helped calm my mommy fears!
Brindee
Glad it helped! :) Homeschooling is not easy when stuff like this comes up! It would be easier for you to help ME (and vice versa) than figure out your own problem, ya know? :D That's why I love this board, you get clear insight from others who aren't muddled up in your situation! Then sometimes you konk your forehead and say, "Well, duhhhhh, I should've known that!" Anyway, best wishes with your boys!
