JennifersLost
My Aspie son struggled with fine motor skills as a youngster, but has learned to do things....it's just he's so darn slow!!! All my boys take turns doing the dishes. The oldest and youngest blow right through them and get the job done. My Aspie son takes hours. I get so fried. It's not that he can't move faster. If I point out how slow he's going he'll speed up for about 15 seconds and then slump back into his slow pace again. I leave him alone, he takes a few hours and eventually gets done. How on earth is he going to survive in the world!!?? How do you motivate your slow-moving kid to pick up the pace! Is there anything else he could be doing to improve the strength in his hands, his grip, etc?
homeschool_mom
I’d like to hear any suggestions you receive. My son is also VERY slow moving, which is the exact opposite of me. It can be very frustrating at times! I do know a little about low tone. My son has low tone and our biomedical doctor suggested giving him L- carnitine. He’s been using it for about six months, but I haven’t noticed a difference. I’ve heard that there are a couple possible cause of hypotonia: a vestibular system that isn’t functioning well (such as being clumsy) or poor delivery of nutrients. This is different from diet, in that diet is what you eat, but nutrition is what the tissues actually use. Hypotonia is not the same as not being in good shape, and although the condition can improve, the tendency toward low tone will continue Some strategies that I’ve heard of include taking vitamin supplements (especially l- carnitine and CoQ10) and using digestive enzymes. Crumpling newspapers and playing in playdough, clay and other other substances strengthen the hands and fingers. Start with softer materials and work up to stiff materials. Legos and K'Nix are good for both finger strength and finemotor control. Legos are easier. Doing mosaic art (put pieces in an egg carton for a different finger workout) will also work the fingers, thoughit's less of a strength builder. Typing and some video games will also help, at least part of the hand. Not as much fun, but squeezing soft balls and hand grips help. Wall climbing also helps, is fun and would encourage daily practice of the grips. But I could use advice on how to speed up the cronically slow.
