Fin aid update--or "The Parting of the Red Sea"

Ladies, in a completely shocking and unexpected turn of events, ds's financial aid package has been changed. We had a true Lent, and now are now celebrating Easter! As in the story of Gideon, He has conquered and left no doubt to whom the victory belongs. God's love and guidance have been clearly evident throughout this process, and I have had a momentous spiritual journey. We are thankful beyond words--certainly for the financial aid, but regardless of the college outcome God has been so faithful. We have grown in our trust and faith through this struggle, and have begun to learn the meaning of "acceptance with joy" in all circumstances.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your prayers on our behalf.

"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord

My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour

For he has looked with favor

On his lowly servant

The Almighty has done great things for me

And Holy is his name"

Lynne - that is absolutely fantastic!!! God surely has a plan for your son!

I've been keeping your son in my prayers these weeks...oh my :-)

Is he going to be able to attend CPW this weekend? If so, be sure to have him check out the Catholic community - it's a fabulous group with a wonderful priest and helped my ds adjust to home away from home his first year.

He is at CPW, and THANKFULLY found out this info the day before he left. Otherwise, it would have been a difficult visit. He doesn't have a phone, or I would call and tell him what you said. But I really appreciate this information. It's been one thing I haven't felt easy about; his 2nd choice school has an excellent Catholic network, but I really didn't know what MIT had. I'm so glad to hear this!!

Great! I hope he has fun at CPW - My own kiddo is busy hosting a fellow homeschooler and family friend, and he is also involved with several of the Random Hall CPW events. Just let your son know when he gets home that the crazy pace he experiences this weekend isn't the typical MIT experience - they're just trying hard to show the pre-frosh *everything* that's available - all at once! The students themselves get Monday and Tuesday off from classes to catch up on their studies after all the busy-ness.

Here is a link to the Catholic community to give you a feel for what goes on:

I had similar concerns before sending ds - his faith was strong and thankfully has remained that way at school. The first year he went to the Monday night dinners/talks and enjoyed the community there; this year he is more involved in liturgy (trained as a Euch. minister). So yay!

I saw your post about the bathrooms on the other thread and just wanted to say that there is no way my son would go for that particular set-up (he's quite conservative). His dorm (and at least one other I know of) only has single-occupant bathrooms. They are coed; but only in the sense of a bathroom at home; one person goes in at a time and locks the door behind himself. I feel completely comfortable using them when we're visiting and I'm picky! One neat Mit-thing is that his dorm has all the bathrooms on a server, so you can check on your computer to see what's vacant before heading off to shower.

One other thought - if your son decides to go, he should take full advantage of "dorm rush". The incoming freshmen are temped in dorms upon fall arrival based on their summer preference form, but during orientation they can visit and meet all the different residence halls during rush. The floors even within dorms are quite different, so it helps to get out and see the great variety available. The "rush" part just means they can re-state their preferences based on what they see and everyone who wants a different dorm from their temp dorm can enter a lottery (there is no real rush in the sense that no one votes on whether or not they want a certain student; it's all decided by an impartial computer program!) My son did this and has been very pleased with his living group.

You know, I almost asked before if your ds lived in Random...but I thought it was silly to suppose such a thing. It's the one hall (after reading and rereading about them all) that really seemed to jump out at me as the place where ds might fit like a glove. Who knows what HE will have to say about it, but I'm really curious to hear his thoughts when he gets home!! Maybe they'll end up as neighbors! And I must say, I wish I was at the truffle making they are hosting!

Thanks so much Kathy!

Praise the Lord! God's will, done God's way, will always have God's provision -- a foundational principle for missionary Hudson Taylor. Thank you so much for updating and allowing us to 1) celebrate along with you and 2) get another peek inside the financial aid maze.

:hurray:

Lynne -

So neat that your son might be considering Random hall, and lol about the truffle-making! I'm sure my ds is involved in that event (or anything involving free food)!

Seriously, wouldn't that be awesome if he ends up living there?! The Random kids strike me like one big family of brothers & sisters. It's been the perfect fit for ds :-)
