Sharon in MD
Hey y'all, just wanted to drop a note and tell you we are off to our final visit to Drexel before making the BIG decision. We hop the train this morning and have three days of activities planned. The big thing is ds gets to shadow an honors student on Friday who is an honors freshman in his major...so that should be the most telling experience. He will also get to visit the dorm he would actually be housed in as opposed to the sample room in a "typical" dorm, so that will also be helpful. Anyway, it should be a really fun couple of days and we could use a mini-vacation right about now! I'll let you know how it goes!:auto: (they don't have a train smiley)

Sharon in MD
Well, ladies, I'm very happy and pleased to announce the ds has officially matriculated to Drexel University!!! We are now the proud mom and dad to a freshman of the class of 2014!!! Ta-dah!!! (imagine fanfare the fireworks here) :D Our final visit could not have gone any better. We are just plain delighted with everything. We got to meet and spend time with the head of the Materials Department and are really excited about all the opportunities for ds to be involved in research from the very beginning. I truly believe that God has opened the floodgate for us. Everything that ds wanted to have in terms of programs and opportunities is available for him there. He really liked the dorm and everyone we have met and spent time with has just been great. It is the right fit for him. I don't have any twinges of doubt...just a good sense that it is right. Ds said he's ready to move in right now....but I think he'll have to wait just a little longer. Just wanted to share our happy news.....Go Dragons!!!! :w00t::party: :hurray::cheers2:

Blue Hen
Congratulations Sharon! and congratulations to your ds (and dh). I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about all this. Now, you had best stick around here so I can ask you loads of questions next year. I'm so happy for your family. Carole whose ds is still waiting to hear from Drexel about their summer program. Sharon in MD
Thanks Carole. We are so excited about the whole thing. I can't even begin to tell you how great it feels for me inside to believe that he fits the school. There is a lot of truth to the old adage that you will know when it's the right school. Your son sounds like the kind of kid they were looking for, I'm sure you'll hear something wonderful by the end of the month. Now that they have their accepted students days out of the way, maybe it will move a bit faster. I have to tell you a couple things that we learned about while there that are really exciting to us. Both are programs that the head of the Materials department is encouraging his students to get into. First is STAR which is Students Tackling Advanced Research, a summer program for between the freshman and sophomore years. It's a little like the mentorship, but a full time summer job and research op. They get paired up with a prof and work for the summer on research. They university provides housing and board for free and they get paid 10.00 an hour....netting 3-4000. Beats the daylights out of working at mickey d's. He said he really likes this program because it helps they land a better co-op for the first cycle because of their experience. It is not limited to engineering either. Second thing he encouraged ds to look into is the BS/MS program. It takes the same amount of time as the straight BS, but you give up one of the three co-ops and graduate with your MS as well. He recommends it for strong students because about half the MSE kids go on to the PhD and half to industry. If they go PhD they are half way to the 90 credits required (MS is 45) If they go to industry the starting salary is anywhere from 10-20 K higher for the MS. That would go a long way to paying off the loans! Anyway, I thought you might be interested in those programs. It sounds pretty cool. Let me know what you hear from Drexel about the summer...we're praying for ya!
Blue Hen
Thank you Sharon. I had summer jobs similar to STAR when I went through my engineering program. It was so helpful to my education, plus it helped pay the bills. I believe we heard about the BS/MS program when we were visiting Drexel. Prayers, yes, please. I'll let you know when we hear, if we hear. Carole
