another Apologia v. BJU science question - Apo. Chem + Physics v. BJU Phys. Science

Recommended Posts

I am still working on figuring out science next year.

My ds will only be in grade 7 next year. However, he is accelerated in math. He has completed Chalkdust Pre-Algebra, CD Algebra I, and will complete CD Geometry in about six or seven more weeks. He is a strong math student. Thus, he will be doing Chalkdust Algebra II next year. We do math one hour a day. No more, no less. I don't know if he will complete that text next year, and I am not concerned if he doesn't. We will just work one hour a day as we have been doing the last three years. So, that's his math background.

For science this year, he has used and will complete Apologia Biology. I compared it to BJU Life Science and found very few differences. Thus, I chose Apologia b/c it was easier on the teacher! He has been in the high B, low A range all year with Apologia Biology.

Math-wise, he "qualifies" for Apologia Chemistry since he has completed Algebra I.

I am trying to decide if I should have him do Apologia Chemistry in Grade 7 followed by Apologia Physics in Grade 8. *I am wondering how the content in these two books compares to the content in the BJU Physical Science book.* Basically, thinking if the Apologia content were similar we could just carry on with Apologia for the next two years and then switch to something else for grade 9. I had planned to make a switch to BJU next year, but my son REALLY likes Apologia.

I realize that I could do either BJU Space & Earth or Apologia Physical, but my son really wants to do chemistry (at least he thinks he does!).

Is this a crazy idea?

I can't compare Apologia with BJU since we have only used Apologia but ds. followed this sequence with Apologia : Bio - Grade 7, Chem - Grade 8 and will do Physics - Grade 9 (summer studies). Fall studies are not finalized yet.

HTH!

It helps b/c it allows me to realize that this *is* a doable idea. But what will you use for grades 10 - 12? Are you going to carry on with Apologia advanced courses or switch to something else?

Thanks for replying!

I can't directly compare Apologia with BJUP 7th or 8th grade texts. However, I think it's safe to say that the Aplogia physics requires higher level math that the BJUP Physical Science since it is targeted to 9th graders (I think!) Ds was accelerated in math and did Apologia Physics in 9th. You do need algebra 2 to do it. And if I remember right, there is a brief portion that required some trig, but it wasn't much and dh just gave ds a couple of short lessons so he could do those sections.

I was really interested to read your comparison of BJUP Life Science to Apologia biology. I've been trying to decide between those to for dd next year in 7th.

Thanks!

Mary
