Laura R (FL)
My 8th grader is taking Latin I for hs credit with an on-line class. She has been OK since they allow her to use notes and such during class, but did not do so hot on a closed book test yesterday. Obviously, she is behind on her memorization, so how can I help her to catch up at this point? Apparently the failing point is second declension and unus-tres declensions. She's just overwhelmed with the amount of rote memorization and it's not her strong suit.
LisaNY
One method that really helps is to pick one declension, conjugation, etc. and write it down several times. The Dowling Method has the students write it out 200 times, but I'm not sure that's the magic number. Why not have her write out the declensions at least 100 times and see how that goes? I have had to do that myself, lately, as I am getting further along in my Latin studies. I just take a notebook and copy the forms over and over again. It is helping. Chanting the endings is a huge help as well. I would sit down with her and have her chant the endings for you at least 5 times per day. She needs to set aside time each day to practice her Latin and drill, drill, drill. The forms pile up quickly, so setting a manageable pace right from the start is essential. Which online program is she using? There are many sites set up to practice the vocabulary and grammar for popular programs like Henle, LC, Cambridge, Lingua Latina, etc.
FloridaLisa
Laura, Have you called her teacher? (I'm assuming this is FLVS.) I have found my dc's Latin teachers very, very helpful. My dd just started Latin I as well and my ds will start in August if he can get in! It's always so full. Lisa
Laura R (FL)
No, this is Latin in the Christian Trivium. My dd is dyslexic/dysgraphic. We choose Latin because I knew she would have pronunciation difficulties so Spanish class was out! :) Likewise, writing anything 100 times is particularly troublesome. However, I do appreciate the reminder to drill, drill, drill. We have fallen short which is why she is behind. I have talked to the teacher who says that dd does very well in class.
