I'm coming to you, wise ones, asking what you think of referrals. I've been asked (no bashing, please:-) if I might offer referral $$$ for families who bring their friends to our program.

If you say, "Yes" would you please comment what percentage of the total amount you get "off".

If you haven't done a co-op or CC and found out about the fact that your joining the group brought $$$ to the family that brought you... how would you feel about it?

I'm not greedy, but I'm wondering if this breaks the integrity of offering an educational choice. Wondering about how this would make families feel.

Please Note That You May Choose Multiple Choices.

I am now listening to your counsel :bigear:

When I worked in a private school, if a family you referred enrolled, you got a small discount applied to the next year's tuition. I think it was $150 per family, not per kid. I can't imagine that for a co-op it makes sense to offer $$ maybe give those folks first dibs at signing up next year.

We're not in a co-op now so I didn't vote on your poll. We're thinking of joining one next year that we have good friends in. I wouldn't be turned off if I found out that her co-op offered some kind of discount for her for a "referral". I'm pretty sure they don't, but it wouldn't bother me if they did. I would be turned off if I felt pressured by someone to join a group and I thought it was because they received some kind of financial benefit...but I wouldn't be bothered by the group, just by the indiviudal.

Most co-ops grow by word of mouth and have the problem of too many on their waiting lists.

CC isn't a co-op because it costs so much. It's not an exchange of services by parents with materials fees as the main cost like most "co-operatives."

I can see why with CC you may need to offer a financial incentive, since it costs so much. But I think it would be a huge drawback to families who will wonder what's "wrong with it" that it can't grow by reputation.

I don't blame the person for asking for any financial incentives they can think of. CC is not an inexpensive program. But as a director, I think you would rather it grow by word-of-mouth and its good reputation. Plus who wants more paperwork? LOL

I've never heard of a co-op that does.

Anyway, I would only give referral if I'm happy with my experience.

I wouldn't exactly feel hurt if I learned someone was paid to encourage my membership but it wouldn't offer greatest comfort either.... And, btw, membership is another thing I don't like! But that's a whole 'nother story - revolving around the same reason. (Statement of faith for a certain religious affiliation = OK, but all the other hoopla I can do without.)

Does CC do this?

wide eyes & laughter:-)

CC is a "program" versus a "coop" For us, you don't have to agree with a certain denomination etc...you just have to understand that some of the material is from a conservative Christian perspective. I hear there are all kinds of people that participate in CC from faiths such as UU, JW, LDS, Buddists, etc....because of the educational advantages.... But, you sign up for the year....

I would be afraid that someone was referring me just for the money and not for the strength of the program.

I would be turned off by the incentive - even if I was the one to get the $.

Sounds a little scammy to me - sorry

I would worry about how much of it was the "sales pitch" for them to try to get a discount. I expect the director to hype it up, but I asked my friends who attended, knowing that I would get the "warts and all" opinion.

I agree with one of the above posts - I would wonder if my family was really wanted as part of the co-op or whether the person just wanted to get $$. Plus, it the future, it could be that some would recommend a family just to get the $$ and end up with some interesting people in the co-op.
