musicianmom
Hi, I'm new here and trying to figure out what to do next year with my daughter who will be 4 in June. She already reads a lot. Would Sonlight Pre-K be a good or bad idea?
lydiasmommy
I've done Sonlight Cores P 3/4, P 4/5, K and now Core 1. Your DD sounds a lot like my oldest. When my oldest was 3 and a great reader, we did Core 4/5. It was a great fit for us.
musicianmom
Thank you for replying. It's good to know Sonlight worked for you in a similar situation. I'm still having a hard time deciding. I guess it comes down to whether I want an official structured Pre-K or not.
lydiasmommy
As your child gets older you may want to be careful of the book selections. Just because they can read it doesn't mean the subject matter is appropriate or that they can handle the situations. My advanced kid is pretty sensitive so I try to be careful of this. That's a good point. Here's what I did to avoid that: We did P 4/5 when she was 3 and started Core K when she was 4 1/2. She was ready for it, so I went ahead. We took 18 months to finish it by adding in supplementary material. We'll take another 18 months to do Core 1 so we'll end up being done with Core 1 at the end of her first grade year. musicianmom
I don't think we would stick with Sonlight long-term, so the issue of appropriate subject matter shouldn't be a problem. I'm pretty sold on Ambleside Online for first grade and beyond. But I cannot follow Charlotte Mason for preschool, no way no how, so I'm trying to figure out what to do for the next two years.
