Screwtape Letters....

Recommended Posts

Have any of your students enjoyed Screwtape Letters? I was planning on using this for a lit class of middle to high school age kids. I'm having trouble understanding and getting into the book myself.

Did your kids enjoy it?

Did they get anything out of it?

Did you use the progeny press study guide? If so was it worth it?

Yes! We did this as a summer reading group book last summer with middle and high schoolers. They really enjoyed the book. We (parents) found it to be an excellent way to bring issues before the kids for discussion. I think the hardest part was for the students to be able to see the issues from the perspective of Screwtape. They had some trouble with the concept of God being the "enemy". They typically look at things from the viewpoint of scripture and this was a bit of a turn around. But once they were able to do that, they could see the viewpoint of the "bad" and provide strategy for the "good" to combat the "bad". I think it was good mental gymnastics for them.

I didn't purchase the progeny press guide, but found one on the internet that worked well for us. This group ran as more of a discussion session with the kids participating. We also read Mere Christianity which some found to be harder than Screwtape Letters.

I got him the book on CD, purposely, so he could read it more slowly. He read along with the CD. I had him write a summary of each letter, and that turned out to be a good idea. I think this would be a fun book to do with a group. We didn't use a study guide. The progeny press guides are great, but I don't know how well they would work for a group.

(I've seen these comprehension questions on other sites, too.)

We just finished this as a family -- read a letter a night after dinner, a few nights a week. Our 9th and 10th grade boys really enjoyed it. No guides, and not even that much discussion -- mostly filling them in on context they were missing, or explained concepts they didn't get. We just let them comment where they had a thought they wanted to share. They loved the diabolicalness of Screwtape -- and really understood why he was so subtle and evil.

Here are a few guides if you would like some more background help or discussion questions:
