Recommended Posts

Just thought this might be fun.

My 9 year old is making his way through the Charlie Bone series. He is enjoying them immensely. Next on his list (once the series is finished) is Eragon (which I am reading right now LOL), Inkheart, and The Thief Lord.

My 5 year old is making a dent in the Dr, Seuss books. LOL

My 7 yo DD is not a fiction fan. She read mostly library books about animals and Zoo Books.

I love these threads too! It's hard to keep up with because all of us have several books going at once.

14yo dd - Just finished Tom Sawyer, now reading The Bronze Bow, and others I can't remember.

8yo dd - any and all chapter books with dogs & puppies

4yodd - As many picture books as possible. Favorites are "We're Going on a Bear Hunt," and anything by William Steig.

Luanne,

Is this a sequel to Bruchko or is Bruckho the sequel (and, if so, to what)? My kids have enjoyed that one. And, more questions :D, who is the author for for the Ivan series? Would they appeal to boys?

Thanks!

Lisa

It's a sequel to Bruchko. The title is Bruchko and the Motilone Miracle copyright 2006.

The Ivan series, by Myrna Grant, would definitely appeal to boys as the main character is a boy. I bought the whole series for dd's birthday last September. Timberdoodle carries them http://www.timberdoodle.com/Ivan_Books_Set_of_6_p/870-435.htm

16yo dd just finished comparing/contrasting Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet with West Side Story (the novel not the musical, although they are very similar) and she loved them.

She is now falling in love with Chaim Potok's The Chosen and will then move on to One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich which I believe she will like just as much.

DS 9 - tyring to find my copy of Stone Fox for him to read.

My dd read that at the beginning of the school year. I don't know if you've ever read it, but the ending is pretty sad. I don't know how sensitive your son is, but my daughter lost it at the end. She cried and cried. Just wanted to let you know.

Here's what mine are reading:

DD 8- Winnie the Horse Gentler series, book 2

DD5- BOB books :001_smile:

I am reading The Little Princess aloud to them. They don't like it as much as The Indian in the Cupboard. Go figure.

Ds 9 just finished "Tucket's Ride" by Gary Paulsen, and before that he read the Bartimeaus Trilogy. We are studying the 1830's - 1850's (straddling SOTW 3 and 4 right now). "Tucket's Ride" is set during the Mexican-American War, and ds really liked it.

We also have "Josefina's World - 1824" (set in New Mexico when it was still part of Mexico), but he just reads that in short spurts. I guess I didn't realize that it's not a story-type book. It's more like a DK book.

Fun thread!

11 yo dd just finished up Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis (a favorite author). She's doing a newspaper as a book report right now. I'm not sure what's next. I'm looking for historical fiction 600-400 BC (Babylonian Captivity of Israel, Daniel, Ezekiel, Ancient China as well).

5 yo ds is reading a variety of books. He is really enjoying animals right now, so lots of animal books from the library.

I just brought home a stack of books that were going to be discarded from a daycare room at church. They include:

Are You My Mother; Father Bear Comes Home; some Clifford, Curious George, and Mercer Mayer books; and Why Do Cows Moo.

Oh, Catcher in the Rye and Gatsby are two of my all time favorites. I just re-read Catcher while on vacation in the fall - after 25 or so years - and then passed it to my dad, who hasn't read it in as long. (I read neither for school, nor did my husband. More and more, I think our high schools were really lame, even 20-odd years ago.)

My (newly)8 y.o. is reading Inkspell for pleasure and Frindle for book club. The boys (4) have been "reading" I-Spy and Where's Waldo books together when they go to bed (they all have 30 minutes to an hour to read before lights-out).

8 yo dd: At the moment (literally) she is reading Henry and the Clubhouse (Cleary). She reads books over and over again, so others I've seen in her hands the last few days are Ballet Shoes and a bunch of Roald Dahl books (The BFG is her favorite).

6 yo dd: Just starting to read through books on her own. Picked up a bunch of Level B Rookie Readers at the library yesterday and read three this morning.

Current audiobook in the car: Pinky Pye (usually we have a Hank the Cowdog going but the library was out of them).

Current read-alouds: almost done with Johnny Tremain and The Reb and the Redcoats

The Youngest Templar, Keeper of the Grail

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

Tom Sawyer

I'm less than thrilled with TS.

Ds9 just finished the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. He liked it, but told me he *GASP* liked the movie better. :( What I have learned here...never, never, never let a kid see the movie before reading the book!

My 10yo dd is reading through The Little House series. She REALLY loves them! She has 4 books to go in the Laura series.

He also read Ballet Shoes and is finishing Theater Shoes.

I just asked her what she wants to do for fun reading after Theater Shoes, since she'll be finished with that after today, and she said she wants to finish the Chronicles of Narnia series. She started it a couple of years ago, and didn't finish, so she wants to finish that next.

She said after she's done with The Little House series she wants to read through the Anne of Green Gables series.

My 5 & 4 yos aren't reading "real" books yet. I'm reading to them 50 Famous Stories, The Golden Children's Bible, Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans and A Child's Garden of Verses.

Family Time Bible in pictures and Golden Children's Books for my 1yo and my day care 2yo.

DS 11 has just today finished "Farmer Boy" as assigned reading for school and is reading "Inkheart" in his spare time.

DD 9 also just finished "Farmer Boy" for school and is reading... something about a dog (can't remember the title) in her spare time.

We're doing "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" as our current read-aloud.

Does your ds11 like Inkheart? I am reading it right now (my son wants to see the movie and I told him he had to read the book first. Now I am reading it so I can see the movie with him. I don't like to watch movies based on books when I haven't read the book). Thus far, I am not enthused. I was just wondering if this is more appealing to a kid than it is to an adult?
