Homeschooling in Virginia Beach

Recommended Posts

I'd love some advice from anyone living there now. We lived in Virginia Beach several years ago, but my oldest was only 6 at the time. I recall filing a form, but they didn't require testing at that age. We are thinking about moving back in November, but I've heard some scary things about the homeschooling situation there now. Are they actively trying to make it illegal? I'd prefer to live in Virginia Beach, rather than Chesapeake since we have many friends there still. However, Chesapeake seems a little more homeschool friendly. Are any of you having a hard time there?

Thanks,

--Dawn

We've lived in VB for almost two years now, and we've had no problem with the school. I file my notice of intent in the summer and send standardized test results to the superintendent at the end of the year. No one has contacted me other than to send a statement of receipt for these things.

Yes, there have been problems in Virginia Beach. Basically, the school board was asking for information that wasn't necessary; it all depends on how you interpret the law. I was asked to show my scores two years ago although my children were given an assesment from a qualified examiner. It panned out to be no big deal.

If you are interested, there is a Challenge program beginning here in VA Beach - pm me for more details.
