I have been homeschooling my son since September. I still have a few "holes" in my curriculum. Does anyone have suggestions for: a beginning Latin curriculum a solid phonics curriculum- (that does not include spelling, grammar or writing as I have these covered) a good map book and a science curriculum for a child starting at a 2nd grade level Thank you so much. Chris in VA Posted January 28, 2009 Share Posted January 28, 2009 Do you have WTM? It can answer all your questions! :D If you don't mind Christian resources, I like Prima Latina for that age. I loved Adventures in Phonics C from Winter Promise (I think its Christian Liberty Press, but I ordered it from WP) as a good phonics review after Phonics Pathways (which we only got halfway thru, then dd's reading took off, so we chose to do the rest of phonics instruction via AiP and Spelling Workout). We love SOTW, and used the maps in it for beginning geography. We also just put together puzzles, hung maps on the wall, and did things like putting our stickers from the apples we ate on the places they came from (and we marked where everyone in our family lives--that covers 7 states right there! lol). We like hands-on science, so we used Home Science Adventures Microscope set, kept track of birds around the house, went for nature walks and kept a journal, and went to the same marsh every month to note the changes. I'm using a workbook as a guide for science. I bought it at learningthings.com I'm on a tight budget, so I got the cheapest I could find and just supplement with library books and the internet. learningthings.com would have nearly everything you're looking for. We combined it with the Explode the Code workbooks, and both boys are great readers now. For science, you might want to check out REAL Science by Pandia Press. As for the rest, hopefully someone else will have some answers! I ditto that. I loved The Ordinary Parent's Guide. That book is what made me seek out TWTM. It's very thorough and confidence building and is very step-by-step. For Latin I use Prima Latina. I love it also. It is so easy to use, not overwhelming (I knew zilch about Latin). You don't really need the teachers manual for the first level (that is what we are on) and I do use the CD (the audio CD). For science I use God's Design (has books for animals, plants, human body, chemistry, earth science, etc.). It has some simple and easy hands-on experiments that are appropriate for the chapters. The books are inexpensive, but are not in color with great pictures. I supplement as necessary with library books on whatever we are learning about from chapter to chapter (or....the internet).
