Apologia General science for advanced 5th grader?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to keep my children who are 2 years apart together as much as possible in sciences. My son is one year ahead in CLE math. He'll start pre algebra in 6th grade. So, I'm thinking he'll be able to handle?:

Apologia Gen- 5th

Apologia Physical - 6th, w. pre-algebra

Apologia Bio - 7th - w/ algebra 1

Apologia Chem - 8th w/ geometry

Apologia Physics - 9th w/ algebra 2

Apologia Advanced - 10th w/ trig

Apologia Advanced - 11th w/ pre calc or calc

Apologia Advanced - 12th w/ calc or statistics

I'm thinking way ahead, but I would appreciate any thoughts . He's a VERY math/science boy. Passionate about life sciences and he wants very much to be a doctor. He has type 1 diabetes and wants to be a ped endo! Thanks for any advice!

I'm not sure, but only you know your child. So are you trying to keep him together with a 7th grader who will be doing it? You are asking him to work 2 grades ahead in science and that is a lot. I have an 8th grade boy. He did General Science in 6th with no problem and Physical science in 7th with no problem. He is a bright TIP state recognized scholar with the Duke program. However, this year Biology as an 8th grader has been quite a stretch. He has made an B+ solid average this year. I would think your child would have to be EXCEPTIONALLY bright to comprehend and do well in Biology as a 7th grader. But I feel your pain. My boys are two years apart and i really enjoyed keeping them together at first. But now...next year I will be doing Apologia Chemistry with my 9th grader, General Science with my 7th and probably Apologia Elementary Astronomy with my 2nd grader... My head is spinning.

I myself am struggling about science decisions for the future.

My ds is in grade 6 this year. We did BJU Grade 6 last year when he was in Grade 5, so I had planned on BJU Life Science for this year. However, I didn't feel I could teach the material (VERY non-science-y mom here). I didn't want to go the DVD route b/c the DVDs were for the older 2nd edition text instead of the 3rd edition text. Sooo, I started looking around and compared Apoligia Biology to BJU Life Science. There are some differences, but not as many as one might think. Apologia Biology doesn't cover human anatomy but BJU covers some. Apologia Biology has more cellular biology and genetics than BJU Life Science. Those, however, are the primary differences that I could see. Thus, my ds is doing Apologia Biology as a 6th grader. I have the Sonlight schedule, and he has done it all on his own with minimal help from his lab assistant (me). He earned a low A the first nine weeks and a high B the second nine weeks. I just didn't see *that* much difference between Apologia Biology and BJU Life Science in terms of difficulty and the Apologia was self-teaching.

I think if your child is where he needs to be for math for the Apologia courses they are definitely doable in the manner you suggest. The only caveat I have is that my understanding is that you need some basic trig functions for the first Physics class. Some math courses teach this in Geometry, but some teach them in Algebra II, so you might want to make sure that jives for you.

I have no clue where I am going with science in the future. If I could do it over again, I would probably have done exactly what you are doing. I am completely confused for next year (mostly since he hasn't done Physical Science) and plan to post a thread in the near future about what I should do!

If your son has a 7nth grader's reading and comprehension skills he should be able to work with Apologia General Science. My 5th grader is doing General Science and it has been smooth sailing so far. He is on Module #10.

The problem is going to be when you hit Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Yes, I agree that General Science might be doable with a 5th grader, but chemistry as a 9th grader would need to be done by an exceptionally bright child.
