Questions about Jacob's geometry

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am trying to decide on a geometry program for my dd. We are doing Saxon but I still feel there is benefit in a separate geometry program. I was thinking of using TT but am interested in Jacob's as well. I am wondering how easy it is to use for a mom who didn't do well in geometry herself. Is there a solutions manual that clearly explains the exercises?

TIA

Blessings

I bought the whole 3rd edition set from ebay and it included these resources.

The "Enhanced Teacher's Guide for Geometry" is the teacher manual. It is a softcover book almost 2" thick. In the first half, it contains the answers to all of the problems including drawings since many of the problems are constructions.

In the second half of the book there is a lesson plan for each lesson in the chapter. Apparently, there are transparencies to go along with the lessons, but when I checked the web, these were very expensive. The teacher's guide contains copies of the transparencies in reduced form - slightly smaller than a business card but readable.

The lesson plans even include hands on activities for the class.

We are early in the program since we just started it this month, but so far my dd loves it and geometry is becoming her favorite class.

My second child is using the Saxon sequence and is presently doing Jacobs Geometry 3rd edition in order to have a complete year of geometry - for the same reason you're considering it. My first child did Jacobs Geometry within the Jacobs and Foerster sequence.

I remember very little from my high school geometry, but that hasn't hindered us. The Jacobs text is very clear, and I'm pleased with it. I also have the test bank and Enhanced Teacher's Guide.

My son did Saxon Algebra 1 and needed a change. He understood it, but it was boring and long for him. We chose Jacobs with Dr. Callahan's DVDs. At first he loved it. But then he started not doing so well on tests and I, not being strong in Geometry, wasn't sure how to help him because I had not been doing all the lessons with him. We switched to Teaching Textbooks and he loves it and we will continue with it in Algebra 2, also. With TT, I am able to sit and help him with a problem because the problem is worked out on the computer for us and if he can't understand something....I usually can by watching the explanation. We plan to continue TT through Pre-Calc and at that point, we may do a bit of a traditional Pre-Cal text just to be sure he is ready for college work.

I hope that helps some.

I was looking at those the other day. I tried TT Algebra 2 this fall when I was regretting our decision to use Saxon Algebra 2. I sent it back. She didn't like how the book was written (too wordy). She is a "show me and and I'll go and do it" kind of girl. Plus it was around lesson 77 until we came upon any new material. I guess though our choices are TT or Jacob's with the Dr Callahan DVD's. We have decided that BJU is out. Does anyone else have experience with the Dr. Callahan DVD's?

Thanks everyone!
