Trina in TX
I am using TOG for high school and I know that it has literature built in, but I was wondering what people thought about LLATL gold books for American and British Lit. My ds will be in 9th grade next year and I'm not sure if I should just do the TOG lit, or if I should use something different, or supplement. I am so glad all of you on this board are willing to share your wisdom, I have been homeschooling for 9 years, but with high school starting, I feel I have so much to learn! Thanks, Trina

greenwillow
We are using the Gold British Lit now for my son's senior year. I wanted to use the Sonlight version but we needed something less expensive - and most importantly - less time-intensive since he has so much going on with volunteer work, mission trips, an internship, and with beginning his own (very!) small business. We have liked it fine, we did make an adjustment to it that suited him much better - I replaced the book Emma with a summer unit I found online at http://www.cscslions.org/images/hs/pdf_files/Summer%20Reading%20Honors%2012%20Brit%20lit.pdf He REALLY enjoyed the substitution! :)
Guest Katia
We tried the LLATL American Lit with my oldest dd, but she didn't like it. She liked the reading selections, but she didn't like the author's tone and she didn't agree with his analysis, especially of the poetry. His writing assignments assumed a certain position many times, and she didn't hold that position. It bothered her that he thought she would. I saw this as a good thing, as she was forced to tell me and write her opinions. It just frustrated her. (but her writing skills flourished!) So, we moved to Lightning Lit and Comp for the next year (British Lit) and she liked that so much better that we have stayed with it. However, that said, *I* liked the LLATL. I had both the American Lit and the British Lit Gold books. They were good programs. Since we purchased the LL, we used it for younger dd, (sold the LLATL) but I think the LLATL Gold books would have worked better for 'her'. sigh. I'll probably never get this homeschooling thing right. Bottom line: depends on your student. It's a good program.
