The PHONICS Road program

Hey there,

 

I'm looking at buying this for my son to start next year. He'll be in the 1st grade; part of the thing I like it that we would then use this for learning Latin. Has anyone followed her program? (Becky Beers) (and then The Latin Road)

I'm looking for good and bad....

I bought level 1 and 2 of the phonics road. I started using it and liked the idea of it. The teacher's manual was entirely on DVD, which moved at a slow pace for me. There was no support for it when I had questions.

 

I found it to be very frustrating that it was a complete English program because the kids progressed at different rates with different skills. So, we changed to seperate programs with more support but along similar lines and with proper TM. We are using SWR, Shurley English and SSL. Feel free to ask more questions if you have them.

Did you ever decide on this? I bought a level of it a couple years ago to try for my dd when we were at an impasse and needed something new. The spelling portion has no form of practice or reinforcement included AT ALL, which is a serious flaw. No dictation sentences, no games, no practice of any sort. And the reading comprehension is fine, but it's a lot of writing and not the kind of stuff we were looking for. If you're only looking at it as an easy way to get continuity and eventually get into latin, I wouldn't bother. There are a lot cheaper, easier, equally good or better programs out there, and you'll probably fall in love with some other latin by the time you're ready to start anyway. But if you LIKE her approach and materials (after you watch the dvd and look at the samples), then sure, get it. It's fine and the approach is solid. It's just got a few weak spots, as all programs do.
