Senior pictures....

Recommended Posts

My daughter graduates in June. I want to have her senior pictures done before then to put into the graduation announcements. Any suggestions on where to have this done that is

reasonably priced? Would WalMart be too cheapy looking? lol (We're on a VERY tight budget.)

TIA

I wouldn't go to Wal-Mart. Better to do them yourself so that you can do some nice outdoor shots. I have used my amature professional friend (she is really quite good) for several years now. Another friend of mine paid $1200 for her dd's senior pics and they were sooooooo disappointed. Hopefully you can find an amature professional like my friend.

My dh's hobby is photography. We have always done our own photos, and we have done photos for others as well.

If my dh didn't have the knack, I would ask my sister to do it. It's not really her hobby, but she has an eye for a good shot.

We have always taken our kids to the local conservatory to take photos. The background is always stunning, and we have gotten many compliments on their photos.

If you decide to give this a try, check out some books by Nick Kelsh from the library. he gives *fantastic* simple advice on taking good photos of people. He also gives examples in his books of good and bad photos, and explains WHY. They are very user-friendly for the average, everyday kind of person.

So you might try it yourself OR you might think through your friends and acquaintances and see if there is anyone who might give it a try. Do it digitally and you can see your prints ahead of time--if you don't have a digital camera, see about borrowing one.

Good luck.

If you live in an area where there is one, try Portrait Innovations. Much nicer than say, Walmart, but not sky high. I can't remember what we paid last summer, but we got a full package with lots of poses and photos. If I remember correctly the total was under $200.

My first daughter never got senior pictures and I regret it. Even so, I was being lazy about getting them for my second daughter until I learned that she needed to give a copy of her senior photo to the music dept. of her university to use for their bulletin board introducing new students. Well EVERY senior who goes to school gets some kind of senior pic and it would be embarrassing for my daughter's picture to be missing. So, I buckled down and did it.

I was happy with our Portrait Innovations experience. We chose to use them after we had 50th anniversary photos taken with my parents & siblings the year before. My sister had set up that appt. and we were all very happy.

Sometimes photography students are willing to do pictures for their portfolios, at a reduced rate from a professional photographer. I've seen some that turned out absolutely beautifully. The bonus is, you get great pictures, and also get to help out a student! Might be worth a shot, anyway.

I wonder where I could find some of these students?? Hmm.. sounds like it might work.

I got the full package with 2 poses for each of 3 children and 2 poses of all three together - so 8 "packages". It was $148 after tax. Each Package is 3 sheets of pictures - 1 8x10, 2 5x7, 4 3.5x5 or 8 wallets. You can also order pictures by the sheet - $15 per sheet (see above for sizes).

They take the pictures with a digital camera. Then they load them onto a huge screen and you choose which pictures in sets of three. Then you narrow down by pose. Finally you get to what sizes, etc. The hard part is narrowing down the pictures!

My Wordless Wednesday for this week was one of my children's group shots. I'm thinking I may put one each of their individuals up as well.

So, if you're on a tight budget, and don't feel you have the expertise or friends to take them on your own, I recommend visiting a couple of Walmarts in the area and asking to see photos taken by their *current* photographers. You may find one that you're satisfied with and that meets your budget, which is all that really matters, anyway.

I hope you find something!
